New York YMCA Camp

Do you think there will be summer camp this year?
AHHH MANNN! I went to camp talcott YMCA
for 3 years as a camper and 1 year as a junior counselor and it was the best summers in my life montly LOL. Peter Moffitt was in charge and we had some great times. All kids shound have an experience like i had here back then i was there in the mid 70`s. "GREAT CAMP"
Hello, I'm Austin Bailey I served as a Village Director at Camp Huguenot in the Summer of 89' After all of this time I decided to reach out to try and connect with some of the counselors that summer.
Which one are you.

I'm 4. Crispy but not burnt.🥰 I miss Camp.
The most genuine environmentalist in the country..come meet Gary Golding of Naked and Afraid..
I there. I was hoping you could help us spread the word about a new show I'm casting for. We are looking for individuals across the country who are suffering from a medical ailment to share their story on our program. If they are chosen to participate, our production company will pay for 100% of their medical expenses. Do you think it would be possible I send you a flyer and you post it around your website and community center?
50th Anniversary Greenkill reunion! Several of us Greenkill Alumni from the mid-to-late '60s visited Greenkill and Talcott today (about 14 of us), after stopping for breakfast at Homers in Port Jervis. What a great visit! We met Greenkill's wonderful director and caretaker (apologies, can't remember her precise title), Hillary and Robin, who were so gracious and gave us tours of both camps. Greenkill looks so much different in its updated version, but the grounds are still quite similar after all these years, and looks terrific. Talcott has retained its simplicity, beauty and charm. Although many of us hadn't seen one another in 50(!) years, it was like yesterday, with memories flooding back -- a testament to Y camping and the powerful friendships made during the camping experience at Greenkill (which most of us attended for eight-week seasons during each of several years).
We'll try to post some photos tomorrow but the photo button is not presently functional.

Located 90 minutes from NYC on 1,150 beautiful acres, the New York YMCA Camp includes two sleepaway camps and a year round outdoor education and retreat center.

Since 1918, the New York YMCA Camp has been a leader in summer camping, outdoor education, and recreation. Our goal is to create a globally diverse community where every child feels welcome, gains new skills & confidence, and becomes more compassionate toward others. We strive also to help all individuals reconnect with the natural environment, to build and strengthen relationships, and to promote healthy living.

Operating as usual

Dear Campers,

It is with a heavy heart that I share with you that, after a thorough and difficult review, the YMCA has decided to permanently close and sell our sleepaway camp and outdoor education operations at Camps Talcott, McAlister, and Greenkill.

This painful decision was not made lightly, and we are heartbroken that circumstances have compelled us to take this action. We know our sleepaway camps have meant so much to generations of campers and staff. The memories and friendships formed at camp are priceless and irreplaceable. They will undoubtedly last a lifetime. I am truly sorry we are unable to continue offering the joyous experience of summer at sleepaway camp.
The pandemic has had a devastating impact on the YMCA’s revenue, resulting in losses of $100 million. For years, our sleepaway camp operations have depended on the organization’s financial support. Unfortunately, our current and projected financial condition has left us unable to continue providing that support.
We are committed to continuing our support of the YMCA camp movement and are exploring how to use our endowment to send children to other neighboring and partner Y camps. We will be in touch with you with more information.

I want to thank each and every staff member who has ever worked at our camp, especially those who were with us until last year. I want to thank our Board of Managers and donors for their leadership and commitment. And I want to thank all of our campers, families, and the local community for your support over the years. All of you are what made our camps so wonderful and special.

Please stay safe and healthy during this difficult time and take care.
The camp office remains open for the time being if you have any questions. You can reach us at 845-858-2200 or by email at [email protected].

Warm wishes,

Executive Director

As we say goodbye to 2020, we want to wish you a Happy New Year. 2020 was certainly a strange year, but it reminded us of how grateful we are for our Camp family. We missed seeing so many of you, but we can't wait to see you in 2021!

Christmas Day at the waterfall

Happy Holidays from Camp! We had planned on showing video of the camp covered in snow, but we got 2 inches of rain last night! It really juiced the flow over the waterfall though.

One of the problems for folks desperate to get out into nature for some stress relief. Come to camp and avoid the crowds:

Your family should be sitting in these chairs! Come on up for a family getaway!

Best Autumn colors in years! Come up to enjoy them:

The wildlife at camp are a bit easier to spot these days. Caught this character on camera in Greenkill this morning - very lucky to have my camera nearby.

We miss you on what should have been the first day camp.

Dear Campers,

It’s with a heavy heart that I must inform you that, after a thorough review, the YMCA has decided to close our Sleepaway Camp operations for the remainder of 2020.

This decision was not made lightly. We know camp is an important part of every child’s summer. However, given this unprecedented situation, we have had to take difficult steps to ensure the Y can withstand this indefinite pause to operations and protect the health and safety of our community.

If you’ve already signed up for camp, you will be given a full refund of all fees and deposits. Please contact us if you don’t.

I’m truly sorry we are not able to serve you this summer. Please stay safe and healthy, and take care.

The camp office remains open if you have any questions. You can reach us at 845-858-2200 or by email at [email protected].

Stay healthy and safe,

Thad Gifford-Smith
