Say hello to OpenHOUse co-principal investigator, Driss Benhaddou, professor at the UH Cullen College of Engineering. 👋

He is actively involved in a broad range of research activities in the application of computation and communication technologies in smart applications such as smart building, smart grid and smart cities. In addition to his work on OpenHOUse, he is spearheading the development of a new state-of-the-art wireless and optical networking research laboratory at UH. Driss’s areas of expertise include simulation tool modeling, software development, networking, switching system design, and routing protocol development.

"I am very interested in applying smart sensors in the built environment. Participating in Gateway Decathlon will provide real-world field testing of some of the cutting-edge technologies in applying sensors in buildings," he added.

Not only is he excited to apply his research and expertise, but Driss is also happy to work on a multidisciplinary project with Hines College faculty and students. He is looking forward to participating in designing the house's infrastructure and selecting technology that the team needs to implement to achieve their goals.

Born and raised in the vibrant city of Maracaibo, Venezuela, Alexandra Ledesma's love for architecture blossomed when she went on a three-month tour of Europe at just 15 years old.

Her academic journey began at the University of Rafael Urdaneta, where she obtained a Bachelor of Architecture at the age of 19. Her ambition led her to explore opportunities beyond her homeland, and she planned to pursue an aeronautics graduate degree in France. However, fate took a different turn when Alexandra came to Houston, Texas. Initially intending to visit her brother for just a short time, Alexandra decided to stay after experiencing the city's vibrant atmosphere and abundant opportunities. Immersing herself in the field of construction management through internships and academic pursuits, Alexandra discovered her calling: to contribute to community development through large-scale construction projects.

She entered the construction management graduate program at UH in February of 2022. Alexandra embraced the opportunity to work alongside like-minded individuals, each driven by a shared dedication to excellence and innovation in construction. She has been privileged to contribute her unique blend of architectural expertise and construction management skills to projects in the public sector as well as private construction firms; most currently, she works with Dunhill Construction.

What truly made Alexandra's time at UH remarkable was the unwavering support and guidance she received from professors like Lu Gao. Professor Gao brought a wealth of knowledge and passion to the classroom, and his commitment to student success and his ability to impart practical wisdom left an indelible mark on Alexandra's educational journey. Through his mentorship and the collective efforts of all of her professors at UH, Alexandra was equipped with the tools and inspiration to excel in her field and in academics. She is graduating with a 4. GPA.

Alexandra's time at UH has not only shaped her professional path but has instilled in her a deep sense of pride and belonging to the Cougar Community. With gratitude for the opportunities she has been afforded and a renewed sense of purpose, Alexandra looks forward to continuing her journey of contributing to the construction industry and making a positive difference in the world. She is eternally grateful for the support of her family.
