Since schools around the globe have been cancelled, many children are home with packets or online assignments from school. Some with nothing at all! Here are some ways that you can simulate school at home and help your children learn during the #COVID19 pandemic:โฃ
1. ๐€๐ฌ๐ค ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐œ๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐(๐ซ๐ž๐ง) ๐ฐ๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐›๐ฃ๐ž๐œ๐ญ๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐š๐ง๐ญ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ฅ๐ž๐š๐ซ๐ง ๐š๐›๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ. Of course if they choose something silly, you can step in and correct them. Give them that freedom and build a schedule around that. If they've received assignments from their teachers, work with those. โฃ
2. ๐†๐š๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ซ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ ๐ญ๐จ๐จ๐ฅ๐ฌ. Make sure you have the appropriate textbooks (online or physical) or work packets for these subjects. You can also get creative and find websites with educational games and videos on the subject matter. Take this time to figure out how your child(ren) learn and what type of teaching style/tool is most effective.โฃ
3. ๐‚๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ญ๐ž ๐š ๐ฌ๐œ๐ก๐ž๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ž ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐ž๐š๐œ๐ก ๐๐š๐ฒ. Now that you have the subjects and the tools, create a daily schedule. Don't forget to incorporate lunch and recess/break time. This schedule does not have to be permanent. Remember you are both still adjusting so it may have to be tweaked until it works.โฃ
4. ๐’๐ž๐ญ ๐ฎ๐ฉ ๐š ๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐ข "๐œ๐ฅ๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ซ๐จ๐จ๐ฆ". Make sure your child(ren) has a place to work with minimal distractions. Try to make the transition from traditional classroom to at-home classroom as seamless as possible. Expect them to be a little unfocused in the beginning. Their home where they unwind/play is now a place of learning.โฃ
5. ๐€๐ฅ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฐ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐ข๐ง๐๐ž๐ฉ๐ž๐ง๐๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ค ๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐ž. Give your children time to do their work/activities on their own. Use this time to get some chores/work done.โฃ
6. ๐๐ž ๐ฉ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ž๐ง๐ญ. Again, you guys are still trying to get adjusted to this new way of doing things. Your child(ren) might be a little resistant to having a parent as an educator and you might be overwhelmed by being a parent, educator and, in some cases, professional at home. โฃ
Things will get easier and we will all get through this by the Grace of God. We are strong enough to adapt to any situation! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’œ| โฃ

But before your child gets too excited about not having to study, rest assured, parents, Scholastic has got your back.

ADHD is about so much more than being hyper-active or "not being able to sit still". ADHD affects everyone differently. Some symptoms are more overt while other symptoms are more internal. No journey with ADHD is the same ๐Ÿ’œ

#ADHDFact: Did you know that boys and girls can display different ADHD symptoms? While boys facing ADHD tend to be more outward with their symptoms, such as trouble sitting still or being hyperactive, the symptoms for girls tend to be more inward. A girl facing ADHD may appear disorganized, is easier to upset or has wandering thoughts. Since these symptoms are not overt, they are often overlooked. #championyouradhdโ„ข

Here's a tip for all of my caregivers with ADHD children and adults with ADHD themselves: ๐„๐—๐„๐‘๐‚๐ˆ๐’๐„โฃ
Exercise is good for the body as well as the brain. When you exercise, your brain naturally releases dopamine which will in turn help you or your child with focusing and clearer thinking.โฃ
For children, who are too young for the gym, you can encourage them to exercise by giving them toys that require physical activity like jumping rope, balls, bikes, scooters or putting them into a sport!

Adult ADHD can make the work day a little more stressful, especially if your job requires you to stay focused on tasks and meet deadlines. When you start to become overwhelmed and you feel like your mind is moving a mile a minute, take a step back and make note of everything you have to complete, then ๐›๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ค ๐ข๐ญ ๐๐จ๐ฐ๐ง.โฃ
Take time to plan out what you need to accomplish for the week, then break that down day-by-day. Next, break ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ต down by hour blocks (and don't forget lunch!!) Factor in a few breaks for yourself as well! It's common to get so overwhelmed by your workload that you start to procrastinate. Just break it all the way down and it will start to become more manageable ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’™

Contrary to popular belief, there is more than one type of ADHD. There are in fact three types: predominantly ๐ก๐ฒ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž-๐ข๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž, predominantly ๐ข๐ง๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž and a ๐œ๐จ๐ฆ๐›๐ข๐ง๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง of the two (the most common type). โฃโฃ
Hyperactive-impulsive ADHD has symptoms that are more overt or external, as opposed to Inattentive ADHD, which has symptoms that are more covert or internal. โฃโฃ
It is more common for girls and women with ADHD to display more inattentive symptoms. With ADHD, it's always important to know what signs to look for, especially the ones that can go undetected. #DrDawnPsychMD ๐Ÿ’™

People do not choose to be suicidal. It's not a "situation" nor a "phase." It's not treated by "pulling up your bootstraps," nor does it likely escape time. And yes, prayer can help... which is why God created mental health providers to help!

Depression is REAL. And when it's not treated, it can lead to suicidal thoughts and attempts. Suicide is not a weakness, nor is it selfish. IT IS AN ILLNESS. And because it is a severe mental health disorder, often precipitated by commonly identified risk factors, it should not be compared to the mindset or actions of a healthy mind. A healthy mind would likely seek help when needed. It would not isolate from others nor would it believe that self-harm is the only option. When a person is suicidal (acutely or chronic), using healthy tools is overpowered by the strong desire to end their "pain." In turn, this requires more than "will power" to overcome the despair that a suicidal mind presents.

It is important for society to be aware of the signs, symptoms and risk factors of a depressed and suicidal individual. When identified early, concerns can be communicated which will hopefully lead to an effective treatment plan.

Any of the following are possible warning signs that a person may be at risk for suicide:

โ–ถ๏ธ Excessive sadness or moodiness: Long-lasting sadness and mood swings can be symptoms of depression, a major risk factor for suicide.
โ–ถ๏ธ Sudden calmness: Suddenly becoming calm after a period of depression or moodiness can be a sign that the person has made a decision to end his or her life.
โ–ถ๏ธ Withdrawal: Choosing to be alone and avoiding friends or social activities also are possible symptoms of depression. This includes the loss of interest or pleasure in activities the person previously enjoyed.
โ–ถ๏ธ Changes in personality and/or appearance: A person who is considering suicide might exhibit a change in attitude or behavior, such as speaking or moving with unusual speed or slowness. In addition, the person might suddenly become less concerned about his or her personal appearance.
โ–ถ๏ธ Dangerous or self-harmful behavior: Potentially dangerous behavior, such as reckless driving, engaging in unsafe sex, and increased use of drugs and/or alcohol might indicate that the person no longer values his or her life.
โ–ถ๏ธ Recent trauma or life crisis: A major life crisis might trigger a suicide attempt. Crises include the death of a loved one or pet, divorce or break-up of a relationship, diagnosis of a major illness, loss of a job, or serious financial problems.
โ–ถ๏ธ Making preparations: Often, a person considering suicide will begin to put his or her personal business in order. This might include visiting friends and family members, giving away personal possessions, making a will, and cleaning up his or her room or home. Some people will write a note before committing suicide.
โ–ถ๏ธ Threatening suicide: Not everyone who is considering suicide will say so, and not everyone who threatens suicide will follow through with it. However, every threat of suicide should be taken seriously.
