LinkedIn added 118K jobs this week. There are thousands of opportunities for event planners.

I wanted to test the market and I sent my resume to 5 companies on Sunday and I had 2 interviews this week. Don’t let anyone convince you that no one is hiring.

To make sure your resume gets an interview, do the following:
1. Update your LinkedIn profile
2. Get certified to plan events
3. Include your unique performance numbers
4. Have more skills than the job requires. Take more classes.
5.Apply for jobs that match your background and industry experience (ie healthcare, finance, tech, real estate, etc)

My client called me in tears yesterday

She said, “My life is falling apart and I don’t know what to do.”

I pushed our ’to-do’ list aside and I listened.

She said she couldn’t focus because she needs to get a new job and fix her credit.

I completely understood.

My life was at rock bottom last year and I failed to ask for help until I was in a deep depression.

I asked if I could pray with her.

We prayed and instead of working on our original list, I became a life coach for her.

We revamped her resume and created a cover letter that she can easily edit for each job.

Next, we viewed her credit report for the 3 main bureaus, and I helped her create dispute letters.

I called her this morning and asked, “How are you doing?”

I was hit with a lawsuit when I started my event business

I had an event certification, but I didn’t know how to run a business

Unfortunately, I learned the hard way!

The name I registered in Georgia had a federal trademark on it by an event planner in Texas

Weeks before my launch party, I received a cease-and-desist letter from her attorney

Since I was able to register the name, I thought it meant there wasn’t a federal trademark on it

I didn’t know I could be forced to drop the name by someone in a completely different state

My attorney told me to change the name but I was so invested in it that I had him go back and forth with her attorney

She won and I had to change the name immediately!

To regain some of the money I lost, I charged $10 for people to attend my launch party

My launch party was setup as a mini trade show sponsored by Maggiano’s Little Italy with 15 of my preferred vendors, event planning seminars, LIVE entertainment, and do-it-yourself demonstrations

Over 500 people attended and I signed 15 contracts with new clients

I am a first generation entrepreneur

No one in my family or circle were entrepreneurs

I have learned every single lesson the hard way

I finally had the opportunity to meet my LA Certified Event Planner, Candice Arnold!

But I didn’t make money to plan events for 4 years!

The event certification didn’t teach me:

I planned events for major companies, churches, baby showers, galas, birthday parties, anniversaries, weddings and I was struggling to make money as an event planner.

I was an executive assistant with a jammed packed schedule to support a VP of sales and his 24 direct reports. I didn’t have time to plan events and do my job, but since no one wanted to do it, they made me responsible for the company picnics, sales incentive trips, and golf events.

It wasn’t until I started planning Lunch & Learn events for the financial advisors, Ameriprise, as a side hustle that they gave me first real check for planning their events. They taught me how to setup a pay structure.

I eventually started making enough money to become a full-time event planner.

Most event planners are administrative assistants or marketing coordinators and they can’t see the value of event planning because it is packed into a fully saturated day of managing calendars and reports.

When I found out so many people were struggling, I started teaching event planners everything I wish someone had taught me.

That was 15 years ago and I still love planning events and I still love teaching people how to plan events.
