How to talk to your kids about a crisis:
Be honest with them. Tell them what you understand and how you feel. It is ok to feel scared but we need to remember what to do when we are scared. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5
Read the Bible with them. Spend some time with them in God’s Word. It does not have to be a story about God rescuing His people from the plague, it can be any of His mighty deeds. As we read about how God has delivered His people in any of the wonderful narratives of the Bible we have an opportunity to remember God’s faithfulness to His people. He has delivered His people before, He will continue to do it until He comes again. ‘I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.’ Psalm 9:1-2
Pray with them. Help them see the importance and the power of pray. God has given us the wonderful opportunity to come to Him with all our ideas, thoughts, and fears. Help your children see that they can talk to Him freely and that He promises to listen. ‘Jesus said, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:28-29
Spend time with them! I cannot stress this enough. They need you right now more than ever. They are afraid and they may not be able to express that. Your presence will bring them comfort and peace. Knowing we are not alone in our struggles makes us more able to endure them. “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Colossians 3:16-17
In all things remember you are the model for them how a Christian acts in times such as these. We will be a good model at times and fail at others. Teach your children that in the moments of failure we repent and ask God for His forgiveness. For we as the world are tempted to act for ourselves when God has called us to serve one another in His name.
Sample prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, please be with us now. Help us to remember your love, especially the love you showed us through Jesus’ death and resurrection. Help me to trust in You. For I know you love me and will be with me in all things. Protect all who work to help us and keep us safe. And let this time pass according to Your good and gracious will. In Jesus name. Amen.
