Congratulations to our very own Mrs. Laura Summers, 3rd grade teacher! Mrs. Summers recently received her Certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. This is the profession’s highest mark of accomplishment.
Becoming certified by the national nonprofit group is a rigorous process. Teachers must submit detailed portfolios to be reviewed by their peers. The portfolios include videos of the candidates teaching, documented professional accomplishments, reflective essays and examples of student work. Teachers must also pass an exam relevant to his or her subject and level of instruction.
Mrs. Summers will be recognized in a pinning ceremony later this month, along with teachers from the city of Richmond and the counties of Chesterfield, Hanover and Powhatan.
Help us in congratulating Mrs. Summers! Way to go bobcat!

Message from Mr. VanRossum:
To the students, staff, families and community of Chamberlayne Elementary, today I say farewell…
The highlight of my 17 year career in education thus far has been leading this incredible school community of hardworking and dedicated staff, outstanding students and supportive families. I’m forever grateful to have spent 9 years at Chamberlayne and the last 6 years as principal. It is humbling to look back over the years and reflect on the many special moments we have shared, the challenges we have overcome, our countless successes, the traditions and practices that make our school the special place it is today and the bright future that is to come.
As I embark on the next phase of my career at the district level, I look forward to joining the Human Resources team and serving the HCPS community at large.
With much 💚,
Mr. VanRossum
