I love this advice from Mrs. Sumner!

Hey Parents! Let's talk school and/or separation anxiety in the morning. The 22-23 school year is coming up quickly and you might start seeing some signs of worry mixed with excitement in your children (of any age). This is normal! Everybody feels a little worried when they are about to start something new.

I am Mrs. Sumner, the school counselor at ECC in the morning and HES in the afternoon. I primarily work with PK-1st graders.

My family had lots of fun this summer, but right now on the days my daughter goes to daycare she has been experiencing some pretty intense separation anxiety at drop off. I KNOW, as a teacher, that the best thing to do is say goodbye quickly and leave. But as a mom, it makes my heart hurt! It also makes me feel guilty to leave a crying/screaming kid in a classroom that looked pretty chill when we walked in. It's OKAY to feel like you need to do something. It's also OKAY to trust the teachers to get your child settled into the classroom.

There's a difference between "I know" and "I feel" for sure. I know I need to leave her at school, but I feel sad and guilty. I also know that the teachers can handle it, but I feel like I just want to fix it by myself. So what can a parent do?

Well personally, we've been working on some strategies to help with the transition - car sing-alongs, various stuffed toys that we say "bye" to on the way in, eating breakfast at home when possible, getting up a little earlier to get some snuggles in, and talking about what she is going to do during the day.

She still cries when I drop her off, and sometimes, she tries to be brave, but her little sad lip wiggle gives her true feelings away. It's a process! I have to remind myself everyday that we are going to school to help her grow. As soon as I'm out the door, she gets busy and has fun, and when I pick her up, she's smiling and tired after playing all day. I have to keep a good attitude and stay positive (because she can tell if I'm worried and that influences her mood too)!

Maybe your child will run right in to school every day ready to go (yay!), but it's OKAY if they don't. All of us teachers are here, and we understand that change can be hard. Let's do this together!

If your child had a hard time going to daycare or school in the past, what did you find that worked to help?
