It's Book Fair Time!

216.
That's the percentage of our goal that we hit, at end of day today.
My goal for the ENTIRE book fair was $3000...and we doubled that, and then did more.
I am so incredibly humbled by the generosity of our school community and our amazing students. The profits from this book fair are going to go right back to putting books in kids hands...and for that, I can't thank you enough!

The book fair is officially CLOSED!

Did you miss out on coming to the library? It's okay! From now until May 21st, you can click on this link:

https://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bf/walnuthillselementaryschool3

Scroll to the bottom, and click on the "shop now" button. This takes you directly to Scholastic, and if you go via the above link, the school will be awarded 25% of the amount of your order in Scholastic Dollars, which we can redeem for books and prizes to award our amazing students!

Have a fantastic weekend, everyone!
Hugs and high fives!

WE JUST HIT OUR SALES GOAL FOR THE BOOK FAIR!
WE ARE AT $3000 IN SALES!!!
OUR KIDS ARE GOING TO BENEFIT SO MUCH FROM THIS!!!!
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!

05/08/2023

Our first day of the book fair has been a bit bumpy so far...technology was working against us, and we were unable to accept credit cards/eWallets for a hot minute.

HOWEVER, thanks to Scholastic Support, we are back up and running!

In only a couple of hours, we have made a touch over 10% of our goal ALREADY!!!

Thank you all so much!
Please remember, we are open Monday through Friday from 9am-3pm, then again from 4pm-5:30pm. And, everything, EVERYTHING, is Buy One, Get One FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

See you at the book fair, everyone!
Hugs and High Fives!

Hello everyone!
Check out our special guests in the Media Center...

We have 8 BUTTERFLIES that hatched sometime over the weekend, and 2 that are still in the chrysalis stage. Mrs. S is giving them water and food, and has named one Jen after our amazing Principal Mrs. Mahar! This one actually hatched right in the middle of Mrs. Mahar 's surprise breakfast for Principal's day. What a cool surprise!

The students are just fascinated by these little beauties, so make sure you ask your students about the butterflies in the library!

Hugs and High Fives, everyone!

Hey, everyone!
LOTS OF INFORMATION INCOMING!
..ready??

First of all, I am SO EXCITED to announce that our BOGO Book Fair is coming up FAST! I will be putting up posters to advertise by end of day today, but here is the info:

SCHOLASTIC'S BUY ONE GET ONE FREE BOOK FAIR
Monday May 8 -- Friday May 12
Open EVERY DAY 9-3, then 4-5:30
EVERYTHING (not just the books!) is BUY ONE GET ONE FREE!

Please come support our amazing students!
At this time, I am also accepting donations of spare change to the library. When kids come to the Book Fair, they are so excited to purchase something that THEY picked out (JUST FOR THEM!) that when they get up to the register, they forget about a little thing called sales tax. I have told the office time and time again that I REFUSE to turn a student away because they are a few cents short. I keep the change in a bag by the register and call it my "magic coin" fund...because it always, magically, has just enough coins so that these kids can get their items!
So if anyone wants to donate to the "magic coin" fund, I would greatly appreciate it!

Speaking of donations...I'm starting to plan for Summertime in the WH Library (because I'm going to have a summer program until mid-July, with summer school). I am planning on a STEM/Coding/Robotics "Camp", and I need some items!
*Shoeboxes
*Metal coffee cans
*Plastic coffee cans
*Cardboard
*Empty Easter eggs
If anyone can donate these items, I would appreciate it! At this time, I'm not sure how many items are needed...but I will take as many as possible!

Thank you in advance, everyone!
Hugs and High Fives! See you in the Library!

It's Book Fair Time!

Here is your OFFICIAL heads up that our BOGO BOOK FAIR is coming SOON! ("Soon" = 6ish weeks from now, May 8th-May 12th)
I have been taking the time to talk it up to our kiddos, and parents should be on the lookout for letters home coming out very soon!

Remember, literally EVERYTHING AT THE BOOK FAIR is Buy One, Get One FREE, so it's LITERALLY the best book fair EVER!!!

This is also the time that I start asking for donations of any SPARE CHANGE that you may have laying around. Kids get so excited about the book fair, but they don't quite understand yet about taxes and how they work...and I do not want to turn any child away because they may be a few cents short.

However, the retail worker in me WILL turn a child away if they come up with an odd number of items. They need their free item, darn it! This is the time to get the most bang for your buck! The greatest amount of stuff for the lowest dollar amount!

LET'S GOOOOOOOO BOGOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

(Hugs and High Fives, everyone, and check out this AWESOME sneak peek!)

It's career week at Walnut Hills, and Mrs. S is having a ROCKIN' good time showing off her fossil collection!

When she was growing up, Mrs. S wanted to be a paleontologist. (Really, she wanted to be Indiana Jones, but anyway... 🤷) She loves being in the library, but it wasn't what she thought she would be when she grew up.

This week, her lesson is all about hobbies! She still loves learning about dinosaurs and collecting fossils, crystals, geodes, and cool rocks...but for fun!

Hugs and High Fives everyone! Comment below if you have a special hobby, OR what dinosaur was your favorite when you were a kid! (For the record, Mrs. S loves the parasaurolophus!)

Sooo...be sure to ask your students what happened at the assembly today!

(Our INCREDIBLE students raised $15,640 at the dance-a-thon, completely smashing their fundraising goal. This money goes to the PTO to help fund field trips, classroom supplies, special events, and gift the ENTIRE SCHOOL a book from the fall book fair. It's a BIG DEAL!

So our principal was asked to come "hang out" during the assembly...little did she know, she would LITERALLY "hang out" on the wall after being duct taped there by the staff!!! She's a good sport, and would do ANYTHING for our school!)

Hugs and High Fives, everyone!

03/01/2023

Good morning, everyone!
I hope you are all safe and warm after the ice storm!
If you haven't heard, March is a pretty epic month...and not only because it's Mrs. S's birthday month!

IT'S MARCH IS READING MONTH, BABY!!!

If you have not checked out our official MIRM calendar, here it is!

And because I like contests so much...during the month of March, take a picture of your student reading a book. Put it in the comments section of this post, or email it to Mrs. S at [email protected] . Include the hashtag and I will put your student in for a special drawing to receive a free book from our upcoming book fair in May! (And there may be a special surprise for their teacher, too!)

Hugs and High Fives, everyone! Stay safe out there!

Hello everyone!
Did you know that only 8% of Michigan public schools have a certified librarian on staff?
Walnut Hills can now be counted in that 8%.

Mrs. S just received her level 3 Certification (Limited Professional Certificate) through the Library of Michigan!

🥳 🎉 🥳 🎉 🥳

Hugs and High Fives, everyone! Have an amazing weekend!

Seriously, your parental street cred will jump at least ten points!

Hugs and high fives, everyone!

Hello everyone!
Mrs. S here with a gentle reminder: when you are returning books to the library, please make sure they go to the CORRECT library!
Three books belong to Walnut Hills, but we're turned into the Flat River Public Library...and one belongs to the Grand Rapids Public Library, but was turned into Walnut Hills!
No worries in either case...we librarians know how to keep books safe, even if they were turned in someplace else by accident.
In the meantime, have a great day everyone!
Hugs and High Fives!
