A friend drafted a note to the admissions officer at his US grad school to request an application deadline extension for folks in Tamil Nadu (who are now without power).
It would be awesome if we all could forward this request to our alma mater too. Here's the drafted message.
Subject: Extension of grad school application deadline for Chennai residents
Dear Faculty and Staff,
I am a former student of OSU-ECE (PhD – EE ‘2013), and am writing to you on behalf of several potential students from Chennai, India on a request for extension of the graduate school application. I apologize in advance for the long email. Some of the faculty cc-ed on this list might be aware of the problem discussed below.
The city of Chennai, India is home to a significant fraction of the past, present and future Indian student body and faculty at Ohio State, esp. the ECE and CSE departments. Over the last week, the city has had severe rainfall leading to intense flooding (as high as 20 ft. in several areas) and is currently declared a National disaster. Several people are stranded, houses are under water, with severe damage incurred to property. Over 200 people have died in the past week with many missing still and continuous heavy downpour.
Most of the city is without power for over four days, all modes of transportation have been suspended and the major international airport has also been shut down. The armed forces have been deployed for rescue and relief efforts. Despite the severity, the issue has not gained significant international attention, but here is the latest info on the news:
http://www.cnn.com/2015/12/03/asia/india-floods-chennai/
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-34981246
Potential students applying to Ohio State from the Chennai city and surrounding areas will not be able to send in their applications on time; they have no means of accessing the internet and no control over postal services in the city for their applications to reach the US. While all the relief and recovery is taking place, which would be a few days or weeks, I would like to request the university to offer an extension on their graduate school application for the potential student applicants from Tamil Nadu.
The information has also been formally conveyed to the following organizations:
1. OSU Graduate School
2. Office of International Affairs
3. Council of Graduate Students
The entire Indian community would appreciate any help that could be provided by the university and the departments to aid in this matter.
Best regards,
Sidharth B.
