Mrs.Gonzles's teacher of the year at challenger middle school
Susana Gonzales, a social studies teacher for seven years from Challenger Middle School, was named the Glendale Elementary School District Teacher of the Year in a ceremony last week.
Gonzalez has spent her entire career with GESD and at Challenger. She has taught fifth- and seventh-grade social studies, and seventh- and eighth-grade ELD students. In addition, she has been a Student Government sponsor, has coached girls football and, together with her students, has planned school-wide festivals, dances and field days.
“I don’t believe my overall philosophy of teaching is much different from other educators, and that is every child can learn,” Gonzales said. “The part of my philosophy that is different is the sense that I believe that every child learns differently and that we, as educators, must determine methods of differentiation for each one. Small things can and should be done within instructional time so that every child has the opportunity to be successful. It is my hope that by finding success, the student will find the desire to become a lifelong learner.”
Gonzales said it is her students who are her greatest inspiration. She knew from the outset that she wanted to teach at a Title I middle school, and that doing so would provide her with the best opportunity to positively affect the direction of young lives.
“I understand that this is a time in their life where they are faced with many outside distractions that get in the way of their learning,” she said. “Those distractions can include poverty, violence and peer pressure. I wanted to be a teacher so that I could be a positive role model for these students and assist them in understanding and overcoming these ‘obstacles’ through the learning process. I was intent on creating a structured learning environment that was engaging, inspiring, motivational and authentic. I would consider the learning environment that I have created in my classroom to be my greatest contribution and accomplishment in education.”
