I wrote three short, direct, informative, funny, and quick reads on topics that face us all. It’s about a look at people and their relationships. They give a direct and honest evaluation of the speed bumps and potholes of relationships. The books “cut to the chase” targeting any relationship, be it personal or professional, dealing with the true feelings and motivations that drive people together or apart.

In another post, I will talk about the other books I have written.

Memorial Day (formally called Decoration Day) is a time for reflection on the price of freedom. In that sense, it could be said that Memorial Day goes back to the first days that Americans decided they wanted an America that was free for all to share and alters life.

For some people, it is a day off from the toiling work where friends gather and spend time and hopefully, during that time reflect on why we have a Memorial Day.

Memorial day for me and my wife Dori was again a special time of remembrance, reflection, and appreciation of the price of freedom. Every year we go to the National Cemetery to honor and reflect on the sacrifice and the real price of freedom paid by so many of our veterans and their families.

As we strolled through gravesites with the names, dates, and numbers I could not help but feel two things; overwhelming pride and a sense of loss.

It is often said almost to the point of being a cliché that “freedom is not free.” And of course, it is not. How much I wonder do we as Americans realize about it as something more than an extra day from work? May I suggest that you make an appointment with yourself some time between now and the next Memorial Day that you’ll go to a National Cemetery to be among those who have fallen?

It’s something to think about. It’s something to do and when you do that I’m sure you’ll come away with a special feeling of pride, appreciation, and a sense of specialness about being an American and/or living in America. You are an American or you have reaped the benefits of the price paid by others.

Yes, it is Memorial Day, a time for reflection and pride and love for those lost who paid the ultimate price of freedom for you and me. Please take a moment and if you are unable to visit our National Cemetery take time to sit by yourself and reflect on Memorial Day.

Happy Memorial Day, God bless you and the freedom you have and bless all the Americans and others who pay the price.

Like so many people before him, I analyzed President Zelenskyy by looking at the
unconscious messages that can be seen through the uncontrollable Non-Verbal Leak™ (NVL), which manifests in a person's facial expressions or mannerisms.
Because this "leak" comes from the unconscious, there is absolutely no way an individual can control, modify or prevent its appearance. Accordingly, these signs are consistent, repeatable, and predictable.

Whether in the boardroom or through personal interactions, our lives are profoundly influenced by the unconscious messages we send through our nonverbal behaviors. Zelenskyy is Goodfield Personality Type 3.2 which I called The Inquisitor. Read the whole article https://bit.ly/3tQXWPV

In 1999 while being a visiting Professor at the University of Westminster in London I wrote Insight and Action: The role of the unconscious in crisis from the personal to international levels.

This book is still being used in The Goodfield Method™ training and at Universities in Europe and USA.

A 2nd revision of the book is now available on our website and Amazon USA & Europe.

This book is intended to help you with the three essential strategies: to organize, to fight and win.

This is based on a simple belief that winning depends on a decision made prior to victory. And victory, in this context, means a win-win result of mutual success in communication and objectives.

Too many agreements fail simply because they are not based on clear interpretations of feelings and facts. When conscious and unconscious information is overlooked, an accord is likely to unravel.

This crucial data forms the basis for agreement, a natural balance all but ensures success. Success depends upon winning strategies and the personal information determination to pay a price greater than that paid by others.

Prof. Goodfield uses real cases and situations as an example. Essential to victory is skill in reading Non-Verbal Leaks (NVL) of those with whom you negotiate. The Non-Verbal Leak (NVL) is the key to determining the real prices at issue.

It has developed over the years and is rooted deeply in the basics of psychology. Dr. Goodfield combines his intuitive skills with psychological research. His work is as new as the space age and as old as human beings. It probes the basis questions of individual behavior and communication among individuals.

For those who are not aware of this we started a non-profit group called Operation New Outlook (ONO) in 2015. We treat militairy, first responders and their families who are suffering from Post Traumatic Stress.

Wisdom Candy, Consolation for Families That Suffer a Loss
Book one and two.

I first created these books as a series of gifts to our daughter. Each self-illustrated story was meant to provide her with understanding and consolation in the face of a loss.

In Wisdom Candy book one I helped our daughter Jane Felice to understand why her birth meant so much to us. It also explains how we, her parents, dealt with the miscarriage and loss of the infant whose conception had preceded Jane Felice’s own delivery.

The story in Wisdom Candy book two helped Jane Felice to accept the death of her grandmother. It also explains some of the values which I wished to pass on to our daughter. One of Saint Paul’s epistles names three Divine Gifts: “And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.” I strongly retain my own faith, as well as a powerful hopefulness and charity for all of mankind.

From the death of the unborn to the loss of the long-loved, these stories and their lessons make palatable, digestible morsels out of the wisdom that comes with maturity and deep insight.

These stories make the best possible bedtime stories for children (and parents) who are coping with grief. Both books include a Bonus Book: A Baad Bedtime Story. A remedial tale for those grieving a loss who are having trouble to sleep.

We are so proud of our daughter who she is as a person. Jane Felice graduated in December, 14 from Walter Cronkite School of Journalism — time flies.

Both books are available on Amazon in the USA and Europe.

For those who are not aware of this we started a non-profit group called Operation New Outlook (ONO) in 2015. We treat militairy, first responders and their families who are suffering from Post Traumatic Stress.

JOHN R. BOLTON: BRAINY, BOISTEROUS, AND BELLICOSE
Smart people always knew that John Bolton was unpredictable, bright, and very much in love with the echo of his own opinion. Bolton was probably one of the brightest stars in the Trump sky. Brainy, boisterous, and bellicose a wonderful combination for a combat general.
Separated from duty now the Trump Administration faces this loose cannon and the fodder from his new book, "The Room Where It Happened." Bolton’s words explode across the American landscape with provocative allegations.
Ever the brainy, boisterous, bellicose agent provocateur Bolton, is more than likely, not departing the world stage anytime soon to the chagrin of Donald Trump and Bolton’s former administration colleagues.
In 2011, I profiled him in my book "So you want to be my President?" as a potential presidential candidate using the 12 Goodfield Personality Typing.

George Floyd’s posthumous offering to America

The recent uproar in America around the death of George Floyd has resurfaced crack pot thinking. There are those who are currently suggesting that we defund or dissolve our law enforcement agencies as a result of the death regarding George Floyd.

This kind of thinking and logic would have us conclude that we should shutdown, disband or abolished completely, all law-enforcement agencies until we have an emergency and absolutely require police assistance. That kind of harebrained reasoning can be found in the leadership of the flat earth movements.

If you can’t see the curvature it’s proof that it is not round. When you consider how long we as people have walked this planet I believe it is safe to say there have been more people who have been born, lived and died believing that the earth was flat then believing the earth was round.

The death of George Floyd has ignited a fuse of pre-existing volatility that has festered within our society for decades and in fact, centuries. Racial injustice and police brutality is an issue that has existed since the founding of our country. Simply put it is nothing new.

Is there anything relevant, important, and something that we should focus upon and have as our takeaway from the death of George Floyd? The answer is absolutely yes! Unfortunately, there is absolutely nothing new in the death and perhaps even the wrongful death of a black man here in America. What then makes this special and noteworthy as a national and international event?

The fact is that the wrongful death of any individual is noteworthy, moreover, it is particularly important for all of us who have the benefit of living in this great country of ours recognize that not all of us benefit from, truly experience, or will ever enjoy the American dream.

This truth is nothing new but, what is new is the opportunity we have for self-examination and in fact scrutiny of the way we relate to each other and the circumstances that characterize that interaction.

In death George Floyd gave us a gift that we would not normally get. That gift is self-reflection, and an opportunity to realize that injustice is a regular reality for a certain population in our country.

All my professional life I have dealt with injustice on a personal, national, and international level. George Floyd provided an opportunity for us to pause, look and listen.

I can’t help it but I hear the words in the song sung by Peter, Paul and Mary “Where Have All the Flowers Gone” many years ago. And their rhetorical question “When will we ever learn, when will we ever learn?”

George Floyd is a comma that makes us pause, and reflect, and once again have an opportunity to evaluate our evaluations and to look at the way we look at ourselves and the way related to each other.

Is something wrong? Deductive the answer must be yes. A man died, a citizen died and a systemic national problem is once again brought to the surface. We are presented with an opportunity to consider the way we relate to each other in a free society that somehow is not necessarily free for all of us. If freedom is not for all of us then operationally then it is for non of us. Perhaps that is why, we as a nation have taken the opportunity to consider what George Floyd taught us with his death that can help us in our life here today.

Justice is only just when the least of us exist in the quality with one another. Idealistic and perhaps unrealistic it can be argued but, it is an aspiration and a hope that hopefully makes some of us read, evaluate our evaluations and think about our way of relating to each other as free people in a free country where injustice is a wake-up call for all who love and live in this great country of ours. America.

The Coronavirus - A Look At The Way We Look

What should I do and how should I change my life according to the national news sources our country is in crisis. But what is the crisis? The media uses one of its favorite words to define the situation we as a nation are facing.

The hair goes up on the back of my neck when I feel I’m being manipulated, tricked or somehow deceived regarding the impact of an individual or event upon my life. The Coronavirus is in fact a crisis — a pandemic, a life changer and a life taker.

Okay, so what should I do different? Wash my hands more, avoid social functions, sports events, the shopping center, barricade myself in my home, pray more, touch less?

We are all brothers and sisters in the family of man
Loss distorts time and sometimes truth - at first there are the moments when you are suddenly struck by the impulse to pick up the phone, to reach out and talk to Dad or Mam about something interesting, important or just to hear their voice or something you would like to share as you always have.
We are only issued one Mom or Dad. Experiencing or contemplating the loss of a parent on some level is particularly difficult. Those moments speak to the importance that a father or mother can have and the mental magnetism that pulls thoughts, words and deeds from you as you try to adjust the loss or impending loss. One thing is sure, the big shadow-cast by our parents never really dies.
They linger in many ways - the fragrance of aftershave or parfum, the smell of a cigarette, pipe or cigar, a home cooked dish. Sounds are also powerful as well - the laugh of a stranger, the funny sound that was uniquely when (s)he coughed or sneezed or simply cleared the throat to speak.

Thomas Paine - The Coronavirus Pandemic and Mental Health.

There is an expression that says, "May you live in interesting times." The fact of the matter is few would deny the fact that our pandemic is one of those times.

Most all of us know and believe that the pandemic of 2020 will pass into history for some a tragedy for others a brief footnote in their lives.

Like Kennedy’s assassination, the first landing on the moon, 911, the pandemic of 2020 will be an event wrapped in our remembrance of a time that touched, taunted and twisted the lives of many.

The Hero: The Best Behavior at The Worst Time
by
Prof. Barry Austin Goodfield, Ph.D., DABFM

"I am sore wounded but not slain, I will lay me down and bleed awhile, and then rise up to fight again"
John Dryden 1631- 1700

On this veterans day I want to share an article I wrote about some of our veterans and being a hero.

Introduction
Tackling a topic as complex as the definition of and motivation for heroism was a soul-searching exercise drawing upon people, places and events I have seen or participated in over many years and interviews with those whom I feel are real heroes. As the Founder and Director of a 501(c)(3), Operation New Outlook, an organization dedicated to helping veterans with Post Traumatic Stress (Disorder), I feel very fortunate to sit around our Board room table surrounded by people, some of whom have contributed to these efforts, who are clearly individuals who have repeatedly risked their lives on a daily basis to help others and the cause to which they are committed. It is a humbling experience, for anyone. Their motivations and actions have been an inspirational factor that is at the heart of this paper.

Heroes Have Heroes
Every hero has a hero. What exactly then is a hero? And why does everybody on some level have one? For example, researching this paper I found that, Alexander the Great wanted to be Achilles, Julius Caesar wanted to be like his hero, Alexander the Great, and so forth. My hero is Winston Churchill. He himself had heroes, one was Napoleon for whom he had immense respect. Napoleon's bust sat on Churchill's desk at his home, Chartwell. It sat next to another bust of another hero, Admiral, Horatio Nelson. Other contemporaries like T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), John Churchill, the First Duke of Marlboro, as well as Lord Randolph Churchill, his father who paradoxically and regularly reminded him, on the rare occasions that he paid any attention to him at all, that he would never turn out to be anything but a "loser." This more than likely had to be part of his unconscious development and what he called his "black dog days" a term he used to refer to the days when he was suffering from severe depression.

Heroism – Instinct or Contextual?
Some heroic acts seem to be instinctual and spontaneous, while others seem to be based on thoughtful decisions to act in a certain way. It is safe to say that there is no ubiquitous or universal explanation. No one size fits all.

The diversity of heroic behavior can be illustrated by two examples. Mother Theresa is certainly admired for her dedication and magnanimity in helping the poor but not for her fighting skills or death-defying actions in a particular moment.

Consider Alec Guinness's character, Colonel Nicholson, in "The Bridge on the River Kwai." At first, the prisoners admire Nicholson when he bravely endures torture rather than compromise his principles. He was an honorable but arrogant man, who it was slowly revealed to be a deluded, obsessive person.

As a profiler, I am regularly asked to determine the unconscious motivations for extraordinary actions and predict subsequent behavior based on that analysis. Just as all behavior is motivated there are conscious and unconscious factors that drive us to be driven. So much of these actions are based upon unconscious factors such as the need to help others, a desire to prove one's self-worth as certainly was a partial psychological component for the motivation of Winston Churchill.

To explore why some heroic actions appear to be instinctual, I would like to bring up the analogy of "a stone in a shoe". Most people have had the experience of discovering a stone in their shoe. However, the response to that common occurrence varies. Some immediately take direct action and remove the stone. Some, however, perhaps even most of us, carry on walking until the irritation or "pain to action ratio" drives us to the side of the road to remove the irritating cause.

It seems to me that there are three types of "stones" one can discover in their metaphorical shoe. They have three powerful shapes often connected. They are Powerlessness, Injustice, and Loss. After nearly a half a century of working with people in many contexts on most continents, I've come to a conclusion that these three "stones" are the primary causes of physical and psychological pain that motivate us to seek relief. And for some, it becomes a battle to fight against for all of one's life.
