So proud of my voice student, Kai Jinn. He has worked tirelessly this last year at his craft: singing, acting, and being a fantastic instrumentalist. I am so happy to say that his work has not gone unnoticed! He was the recipient last night of a Spotlight Youth Theatre Gobie award for Most Improved Performer for this season. Go Kai!

Stay healthy this singing season! Here are your tips to Good(enberger) Vocal Health!
Decaf or Herbal Tea – Relaxes and soothes throat while hydrating your body. *Throat Coat Tea contains Slippery Elm and Licorice Root for increased relief during overuse or sickness.
Honey – Replenishes lubrication and moisture to throat. It can be taken by the spoonful or mixed into warm drinks. *Manuka Honey is imported from New Zealand and can be purchased online or at Sprouts. It has natural antibiotic properties that can heal and prevent scar tissue affecting the voice. Local honey can also be purchased at most farmer’s markets and can help eliminate swelling and dryness caused by allergies.
Water – Men:13x 8oz cups per day, Women: 9x 8oz cups per day, Girls and Boys 5-8 8oz cups per day. Hydration is necessary for your vocal folds and your entire body! Remember though that what you drink today isn’t fully absorbed by your body until tomorrow. And a good rule of thumb: “Pee clear, Sing clear”.
Apples – Naturally occurring source of vitamins C, E and healthy proteins. Can heal and prevent vocal cord injury.
Room humidifier/vaporizer – It is beneficial to singers or people who use their voice for speaking for extended periods, to increase the humidity in your living space or work environment to at least 30%.
Personal steamer – Immediately hydrates voice box and increases moisture in vocal folds. Can also be done with shower steam. Breathe steam 2-3 times per day for 5 minute intervals to soothe irritated vocal cords.
Lemon/Lime – Vitamin C and antioxidants can be healing when experiencing respiratory illness. HOWEVER, too much citrus can strip the throat of natural mucus and can result in hoarseness of the voice.
Throat Spray – MUST be made for singers: Entertainer’s Secret, Singer’s Saving Grace, Vocal Eze, etc. These are non-alcoholic and made with natural lubricants that replace and replenish. Do NOT use Chloraseptic or other numbing throat sprays that are designed to dry and numb the throat.
Honey/Slippery Elm drops or candy – Natural Honey, Pectin, Glycerin, Slippery Elm will soothe and lubricate the throat. Do not be fooled by Honey/Lemon flavored cough drops that still have a Menthol base (Halls). Menthol is drying and numbing and bad for your voice!
**Don’t let these things cause vocal strain for you!
Caffeine and Alcohol – Both dehydrate your body, and vocal folds. If you do partake, replenish body for every beverage with an equal volume of water.
Reflux – Try not to eat 2-3 hours before bed! If reflux still occurs, over the counter medicines for reflux, or a tsp. of organic Apple Cider Vinegar mixed in water before bed should clear up your issues!
Cold, Cough and Flu medications – These contain agents that purposefully dehydrate mucus membranes and vocal folds. Stick with natural remedies and stay away from anything with alcohol in the ingredients.
Allergies – This is a big one in AZ. Stay hydrated and consume a tsp. of local honey daily. This can be found at your local farmer’s market. Over the counter medications such as Zyrtec and Flonase can eliminate vocal swelling while not affecting lubrication.
