This is Lucas Theriault, GCC Forensics Team Publicist reporting on behalf of our team who are thrilled to announce the results of a great weekend of competition representing our school. This past weekend we participated at Point Loma’s Sunset Cliffs Classic, nicknamed the “Bloodbath at the Beach” for its notorious annual list of talented teams. Our own team went on to not only win multiple awards over teams from schools such as the top-rated University of Notre Dame, the United States Air Force Academy, University of Utah, Point Loma Nazarene University, California State University- Long Beach, California State University-Fullerton, Concordia University, and Northern Arizona University, but we were also named the top Community College Team of the entire tournament. In addition, GCC Debate Team Captain, David Turpin, was named “Top Community College Debate Speaker” and received a $3,000.00 scholarship award.

Even better, we did so well that we won the Individual Events Sweepstakes Award for the weekend’s “swing,” which preceded the Sunset Cliffs Classic and second tournament that we were unable to attend. Saying that “we put in work and it paid off” would be a cliché, but the weeks prior to the Sunset Cliffs Classic were the most work intensive of the entire year. Clearly, we did exceptionally well and we are proud to have represented our school so successfully.

The list of the awards we won are as follows:

• Top Community College, Sunset Cliffs Classic
• Top Community College, Sunset Cliffs Montezuma Mesa “Swing” Tournament
• Top Community College Debate Speaker- David Turpin (and awarded a $3000.00 scholarship)
• Junior Parliamentary Debate – Quarter-finalists - Jeffery Lewis and William Longo
• Junior Parliamentary Debate - 4th Place Speaker - William Longo
• After Dinner Speaking - 2nd Place - Lauren Michaud
• After Dinner Speaking - 5th Place - David Turpin
• Communication Analysis - Tied for 2nd Place - Destinee Sior
• Extemporaneous Speaking - Tied for 2nd - Robert Magnus
• Impromptu Speaking - 1st Place - Lucas Theriault

The tournament schedule leaves us with little time to bask in victory as we leave for the PSCFA Spring Championship Tournament this next weekend, February 19 -21, at Moorpark Community College in Moorpark, California. With only President’s Day to rest and recuperate after an overnight drive through the desert back to Phoenix, we are back to our intense preparation and practice schedule. We are now looking forward to the Regional, National, and International Championship Tournaments that make up the rest of the school year’s competition schedule. As always, a big thank you to all of you for your continued support.

This is Lucas Theriault, GCC Forensics Team Publicist reporting to you on our most recent competition. The GCC Forensics Team recently competed at the “Close to the Coast Swing Tournament” hosted at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, California. This was a particularly difficult tournament for individual events, with powerhouses Bradley University from Illinois and El Paso Community College from Texas attending. Debate was comprised of Southern California’s debate teams, including California State University - Long Beach, who is currently one of the top teams in the country. The work we had been putting in over winter break looks like it paid off, with the team bringing home several trophies for both Individual Events and Debate.

Open Parliamentary Debate - Destinee Sior and Lucas Theriault – Silver Medal
Open Parliamentary Debate - Jesse Watts and Robert Magnus – Bronze Medal
Open After Dinner Speaking - David Turpin - 6th Place
Open After Impromptu - David Turpin - 6th Place
Novice Impromptu - William Longo - 3rd Place
Novice Impromptu - Robert Magnus - 1st Place
Novice Extemp - William Longo - 3rd Place

Since this tournament, we’ve been preparing for one of the most difficult tournaments we will compete at all year: The “Sunset Cliffs Invitational,” hosted at Point Loma Nazarene University, in San Diego, California. We will be leaving the weekend of Valentine’s Day, February 12-14, to represent our school at one of the most prestigious debate tournaments hosted each year. Dr. Reed, the newest coaching addition to our team will be traveling with us as well (even though it is his Wedding Anniversary). We are so thankful for our coaches and their endless dedication to our team. We strive to represent GCC well and make the campus proud of our accomplishments.

The GCC Team would like to thank everyone that came out and supported us during last nights showcase. We are very thankful for not only all of the supportive administration, but for our friends, family, and peers being able to see what we work on for countless hours a week. Thank you to all.

Dear Administrators, Faculty, and Staff:

My name is Lucas Theriault, and I am a member of this years Forensic Team. My speech and debate colleagues have asked that I also serve as Team Publicist. So here it goes. We competed the weekend of the 20th-22nd at the 2015 PSCFA Spring Championships tournament at Moorpark College in Moorpark, California and did very well. This was, as the name would suggest, the championship for our conference and the final tournament before Nationals and Internationals. The tournament presented great competition, with Biola, Point Loma Nazarene, Irvine Valley College, UCLA and Concordia University among the 30 schools in attendance. The team produced the following results:

Open Prose - Kyle Backer - 6th place

Open Impromptu - Daniel Patterson - 6th place

Open Parliamentary Debate - Esmeralda Ramos and Daniel Patterson (bronze medal), Ryan Witzke and Destinee Sior (bronze medal)

Top Novice Parliamentary Debate Speaker - Jeffrey Lewis - 6th place

Open IPDA Debate - Lucas Theriault - silver medal

Novice IPDA Debate - Jeffrey Lewis - bronze medal

I look forward to supplying you with my next report which will be about how we did at the International Forensics Association tournament in Barcelona, Spain. We will be competing against top colleges and universities. We’re excited to represent GCC abroad and bring home awards!
