[12/19/19]   Well, that’s a wrap! The last of three performances was last night when my piano and voice students performed in front of a very appreciative audience of friends and family at Graves Piano & Organ Company. I am so proud to teach each and every one of you, to witness the progress you make and how you grow as musicians and performers. It’s truly an honor. Thank you to all those who make it possible for me to do what I love in this world, in this town. And thank you to my husband for being my primary supporter, producer, videographer, photographer, and roadie. Can’t wait to see what 2020 will bring!

Two performances down, one to go in the form of my student recital tomorrow night. In preparation for that, today is cookie baking day. For my own piece, after 30 years of practicing it, I think I am finally ready to perform Debussy’s Clair de Lune. Wish us luck!

It’s choir concert season so here are some quick warm-ups you can do on the fly!

[11/29/19]   A Day After Thanksgiving Poem

Twas the morning after turkey day and all through the house,
My blood sugar was up and my pants had to be let out.
The dishes were piled by the sink with no regard,
For how ate I so much or how slept I so hard.
With Pa still snoring away and me clutching my tea,
I face a day of chores, no shopping spree for me.
But in my heart I exclaim amid the aftermath’s mess,
May your turkey day be filled, as mine was, with the spirit of thankfulness.

Arts-based groups benefit individuals with mental health conditions

It's truly amazing what we are discovering about the importance of arts and music in our lives. This research shows that group singing can benefit people with mental health conditions. Finally, those things that singers, musicians, and artists have instinctively known for years, can be proven through . . . SCIENCE!! A new study found that participation in arts-based groups -- such as those that involve choir singing and creative writing -- benefits the emotions of both healthy adults and those experiencing mental health conditions.

From lullabies to live concerts: How music and rhythm shape our social brains

Brain synchronization happens among audience members at a live musical performance! How cool is that?! A universal sign of motherhood is the lullaby. The world over, mothers sing to their babies, whether Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, their favorite song from the radio, or even random notes. This universality makes the simple lullaby a great window into the human mind. In a new study, cognitive neurosc...

“When will the education authorities realize that the creative arts are more than a mere nice-to-have; they are essentials-to-have.”

Derelict school becomes national leader by making a surprising subject compulsory

“When will the education authorities realize that the creative arts are more than a mere nice-to-have; they are essentials-to-have.” “We were in special measures. We had low staff morale, parents not happy with the school, results were poor and nobody wanted to come here, we had budget issues. It’s a downward spiral when you’re there.” This is what Feversham headteacher, Naveed Idrees, told The Guardian. He continued: “...

Fact or Fiction?: Babies Exposed to Classical Music End Up Smarter

Some things are science. Other things are myth. And although we are learning that music has incredible neurologic benefits, there is also a tendency to exaggerate a particular study’s findings to the point where what might have been sound science becomes misconstrued into myth and legend. Case in point: The Mozart Effect. Is the so-called "Mozart effect" a scientifically supported, developmental leg up or a media-fueled "scientific legend"?

Listening to happy music may enhance divergent creativity: Participants hearing positive, arousing music came up with most original solutions

Looks like leaving the music on while you’re doing homework or projects may enhance your creativity. Listening to happy music may help generate more, innovative solutions compared to listening to silence, according to a study.

Harmony Project Productions Inc. | The Columbus Foundation

The Big Give starts tomorrow morning! Eight years ago, I went to see a concert at the Lincoln Theatre. I had attended the first rehearsal of the group earlier in the Fall but had decided I was too busy to be a part of it. Nonetheless, I wanted to support them so I bought a couple tickets and sat in the balcony of the Lincoln Theatre and listened.

I've been singing in choirs all my life and directing them for half of it. So my ears are trained. What I heard wasn't perfect. It wasn't "schooled". But what happened in that lovely little theatre that night was no less than amazing! People coming together from all over the city to make an incredible sound that was passionate and uplifting and conveyed a message I had always thought was possible to achieve in song. I went home resolved that I would not sit out another season!

Please consider helping the Harmony Project live its mission of building community through passionate song and service by donating tomorrow during The Big Give.
#BigGive #forUS #HarmonyProject #GoBigBeKind Connect communities through art, education, and volunteerism and provide opportunities for individuals of different cultures, religions, ages, affiliations, and orientations to work together.

The Columbus Foundation

Since the moment I learned to talk, I've been singing. I've been playing piano almost that long. By the time I got to college, I started to understand that music played a much more significant role in my life than just entertainment, or distraction, or even personal achievement. My time with the Harmony Project enables me to put into action through music the values I hold dear about community, about giving back, and about making connections with other human beings. Please consider giving next Tuesday during The Big Give. Your support will help drive artistic passion with a purpose!

On October 10-11, participate in The Big Give, a 26-hour online giving rally. Join thousands of people who will show their spirit by giving to support more than 800 nonprofits in central Ohio! #biggive
