The Audacity of Richard Serra - One River School 04/01/2024

Monday Thoughts: The Audacity of Richard Serra
Matt Ross, Founder and CEO One River School

When I began thinking about starting One River School, I was inspired by the audacious thinking that went into making bold contemporary art and I wanted to create a program that allowed us to “focus on the art of today”. Everyone knew about Picasso and Van Gogh, but I was disappointed that most people didn’t know about artists like Richard Serra, who died this past weekend at age 85.

Serra was an unrivaled postwar sculptor with a diverse practice. He made work by splashing molten lead on walls and casting forged steel into great arcs of solid metal, which curve and bend transforming spaces and create a visceral experience. His 2007 exhibit at MOMA and his 2022 exhibit at the Guggenheim in Bilbao almost defies rational thinking.

There is something that I admire about artists who stretch themselves to achieve unthinkable outcomes. And, given the magnitude of his achievements, I felt compelled today to recognize the life and passing of Richard Serra.

Benjamin Klein - One River School 03/12/2024

Monday Thoughts: Benjamin Klein
Matt Ross, Founder and CEO One River School

I love when I walk into one of our schools and see dazzling art on our walls. It makes me feel like we are doing our job by sharing serious work from world class artists in communities that don’t get to engage with contemporary art too often.

Benjamin Klein has an exhibition that is now open at our school in Montclair, NJ and it is his second show with us. As you can tell from the image, Ben’s work is vibrant, colorful and ambitious in the way it challenges our senses. I often think of rich color in paintings as the equivalent to spice in food, and this work amounts to a spicy broth.

Benjamin Klein was born in Chicago and grew up in Montreal, Quebec. His paintings depict a rich but ambiguous landscape of dreamlike scenery and characters. Hallucinatory colors, strange environments, and unexplained scale shifts inhabit the space as much as do the figures themselves, who interact and confront one another in quietly poetic, charged psychodramas.

Visit any one of our locations right now and you will get a taste of “the art of today”. I really feel that is an important thing to support the artist community, so if you have any interest in owning a painting, connect with our team and I’m sure they can walk you through the process.

Monday Thoughts: Improving Mental Health Through the Arts
Matt Ross, Founder and CEO One River School

The relationship between the arts and mental health is well established and there is growing evidence that the arts can be used to help people with anxiety, depression and other issues that impact us.

Making art as a form of mental health treatment dates back to the mid-20th century, when soldiers returning from the battlefields of World War II were left with a condition that was known as “shell shock,” but is now called post-traumatic stress disorder. Veterans painted, drew, sculpted and made other forms of art to help process what they’d witnessed and experienced at war. Experiences like trauma are very difficult to articulate into words, so therapies that can support and connect patients with nonverbal expression are really the foundation of the creative arts therapies.

Having taught thousands of art students of all ages, I can attest to the enhanced mood and happiness that people of all ages derive from artmaking.

Monday Thoughts: Adults Creating, Learning and Growing
Matt Ross, Founder and CEO One River School

Nothing makes me happier than seeing one of our adult students sharing a completed project. And the joy on their face doesn’t simply represent the pride that comes with making something, it also represents the personal development that comes with the process.

Sandra McSorley, a student at our Middletown school, created this cool mixed media object, and she shared so many stories during my recent visit there about what artmaking does for her. In fact, every morning that I visit our schools, I carefully watch our adult students and I am reminded that what we do is maybe even more important for adults than it is for our K-12 students! The friendships, the growth, the learning…it all feeds into an extraordinarily healthy way to engage in something that we can enjoy forever.

We created Adult Art Shuffle so that our experience would be different…individually focused, personal and calibrated for all skill levels. Shuffle things up and give us a try.

The Art of Excellence - One River School 02/12/2024

Monday Thoughts: The Art of Excellence
Matt Ross, Founder and CEO One River School

Viewing a great painting, listening to a great song, tasting great food, reading a great novel, watching an amazing dance performance are all equal to the experience of watching an amazing quarterback delivering at a high-level, with everything on the line.

One of the things that excites me most in life is recognizing excellence in all artforms when you see it. And, there’s nothing more top of mind than the performance of Patrick Mahomes last night in the Super Bowl. Over 110 Million people watched the Super Bowl yesterday and it was a great experience.

Bravo! Hail to the Chief!

These student outcomes are more than just beautiful artworks. They hold meaning, symbolism and stories from the artists behind them.

One River School’s curriculum balances fun, learning and conceptual thinking… starting at even the youngest age. It’s what makes these works so special and why our students grow in more than just their art making skills.

Planning for Summer Camp - One River School 02/05/2024

Monday Thoughts: Planning for Summer Camp
Matt Ross, Founder and CEO One River School

I know we are sitting here on February 5th and for a lot of us, summertime seems so far away. But, before you know it, you will be in the throes of trying to figure it out, so I wanted to share a couple of thoughts today.

Our summer camp programs at One River School are among the things we are most proud of. Very simply, we believe we have “the most compelling creative camps” in the country and we have a lot of proof to back it up. Twelve years of refining our experience and many thousands of satisfied campers allows me to feel that way. And, the fact that so many of our campers are returning to us each year is another indicator of the kind of experience that we offer.

For those of you who are new to us, you can visit your local school page, and then go to our Camp Page and search by week, age and camp type to filter the options that meet your needs. The camps are one-week long in duration and each are a half-day experience and most importantly, they are so much fun fun fun fun!!!!

Our summer camp pages are now live on our website so go and take a look. A lot of them fill up fast so I would reserve whatever you want as soon as possible. And, if you have any questions, email your local school or call them. We are here to assist in building a menu that fits your needs perfectly.

Monday Thoughts: Showtime at One River
Matt Ross, Founder and CEO One River School

During the last few weeks, our schools presented their winter 2024 student exhibitions and the feedback has been amazing. The images coming across my desk represent a wide variety of compelling projects and spectacular outcomes, and you can clearly tell that our students have been fully engaged in the creative process.

To be clear, we write all of our own lesson plans here at One River School … everything that we teach is original and we have been doing this for the 12 years that we have been in business. Each year, there is an arc to the curriculum that allows us to focus on teaching fundamental skills while also having fun, but when we get to our exhibition projects, the bar is raised a little bit higher and we see our students dedicate themselves in a more focused way. They know that the work is going to be hung side-by-side with all of their peer’s work and it adds a heightened sense of importance. This experience demonstrates our student’s capacity to channel their focus and their skills, and I am so proud of everyone who has participated across the system, including every student, teacher, and manager at One River.

If you haven’t had a chance to visit your school in the last couple weeks, I urge you to stop in today. Walk through the galleries, take your time, stare deeply, ask questions, and most importantly, give a high-five to the students and teachers.

Embracing MLK - One River School 01/15/2024

Monday Thoughts: Embracing MLK
Matt Ross, Founder and CEO One River School

The statue depicted, “The Embrace,” is one of the most interesting and compelling works of art. It is inspired by a photograph of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King embracing and the statue sits in Boston Common. Created by artist Hank Willis Thomas and MASS Design Group, the purpose of the statue is to serve as a memorial representing love, joy and justice.

On this Martin Luther King holiday, I want to use my Monday Thoughts to pay tribute to the work he did. While the world is so noisy right now, I am often reminded of one of the most beautiful quotes I ever heard that came from Dr. King: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that”.

I often feel that artmaking presents an opportunity to learn about yourself and provides the muscle to look at the world around you with a more thoughtful sensibility. And at One River we strive to “embrace” the differences in each other.

Kel Fan, 14, a student at One River School in Allendale, NJ, began drawing in 2019, diving into it full force during the pandemic after getting an iPad and drawing digitally.

As a student since 2021 they have attended Teen Art Shuffle, Portfolio Development, and a variety of summer camps. Currently a student in Teen Focus on Manga, they are focusing on developing characters and stories.

We asked Kel to describe One River in 3 words:
