Did you know? The Day of the Dead (Dia De Los Mu***os) is a primarily Mexican tradition where families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives and celebrate the lives they lived. The roots of the Day of the Dead, celebrated in contemporary Mexico and among those of Mexican heritage in the United States and around the world, go back some 3,000 years, to the rituals honoring the dead in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. The Aztecs and other Nahua people living in what is now central Mexico held a cyclical view of the universe, and saw death as an integral, ever-present part of life. Want to find out more? Ask questions! Does your child appear to be struggling in a particular subject? Do they understand the concepts? NOW is the time to be in touch with their teacher, rather than waiting until later in the year when they might be missing out developing important skills.

We’re used to relying on letter grades, but with the educational upheaval our kids have experienced schooling through a pandemic, it’s gotten a bit more complicated. You might see signs that your child seems to be struggling, only to find a passing or excellent grade on their report cards. It can be confusing. They break it all down and have some helpful questions you should be asking here: https://www.scarymommy.com/parenting/your-kids-grades-may-not-accurately-reflect-where-theyre-at-academically-here-are-the-questions-you-should-be-asking

It’s been great celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month! We love highlighting the histories, cultures & contributions of Latinos whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. People of Hispanic descent make up more than 18% of the U.S. population and a quarter of all children living in the U.S., according to the 2020 census.
That’s a lot of students who need to see their culture represented in American history. Want to learn more? Visit: https://www.iste.org/explore/classroom/9-resources-teaching-about-hispanic-heritage

Another Highlight: Carlos Juan Finlay was a Cuban physician who first linked yellow fever to mosquitoes in 1881. Born in Puerto Príncipe, Cuba, Finlay studied abroad before returning to Havana as a general practitioner and ophthalmologist with a penchant for scientific research. At the time, yellow fever still ravaged the tropics, terrorizing populations and disrupting shipping, especially in Havana. Because of his extensive research, yellow fever was wiped out of Cuba as well as Panama, enabling engineers to finally complete the Panama Canal. Wow!
