INTERPRETER LICENSURE ONLINE FEEDBACK.

Bridges for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is interested in the topic of Interpreter Licensure because we serve the D/deaf, hard of hearing, and deaf-blind communities. As part of that service, we offer interpreting services, and we believe that interpreting is an important and noble profession rooted in serving our communities. Protecting and elevating the interpreting community protects and elevates our beloved D/deaf, hard of hearing, and deaf-blind communities. Any legislation or policy initiative regarding interpreter licensure has a direct impact on us and on those we serve, so we have both a right and a duty to be informed and to be engaged on this issue and to inform and to engage our communities in this discussion and process.

There currently exists a draft of a bill for interpreter licensure that is the product of many years of hard work by some very fine, smart people who have given their time and expertise voluntarily. At various points and in various ways, they engaged a number of stakeholders across the state. Bridges for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing did not draft this bill. We were not engaged in its process. We are not now taking over that process or responsibility. We are simply participating in discussion and determining our position on the issue. As always, we seek to engage respectfully, supportively, collaboratively, and transparently in any process that has a direct impact on us and on those we serve.

To that goal, we are hosting two Town Halls on Interpreter Licensure on Wednesday, January 29, 2020, so that we may solicit the feedback and direction of our Middle Tennessee community. We know this is short notice (due to the timing of our receiving the bill and legislative deadlines) and that not everyone will be able to attend. Being together for discussion is always our first choice, but we are offering this electronic option to offer feedback. Anyone living in Tennessee can respond.

Additionally, we will hold a Town Hall on Interpreter Licensure through BridgesWEST in Memphis, TN, and to hold additional meetings in Nashville at a later date.

Thank you for taking the time to offer feedback! We are requesting names and emails only so that we may gollow up and send you any updates. We will not share this information or attribute comments to any specific person when compiling them. We are trying to collect as much detailed feedback as possible as quickly as possible. We know this is a long form, so we truly appreciate your time, insight, and perspective. Through your feedback and that offered in the Town Halls, we will answer four questions: Do we support Interpreter Licensure? Do we support this specific bill as drafted? Should we engage in a process to work collaboratively with its drafter to make revisions? Should we, working with stakeholders, draft an independent bill?

Click on the link below to get started!

We cannot tag everyone, so we invite you to share with stakeholder groups in Tennessee.

Town Hall Meeting on Interpreter Licensure. We invite the Deaf community and the interpreting community in Middle Tennessee to attend. All stakeholders are welcome. RSVP information is below. Interpreting and CART will be provided.

Wednesday, January 29th. Two sessions. First Session: 11am to 1pm. Second Session: 5pm to 7pm. You may attend one or both. Both sessions will cover the same material.

You must RSVP here: https://hipaa.jotform.com/200234506159145

Like all the people who would be impacted by interpreter licensure, we must consider whether or not we will support legislation to create it. We want your feedback and insight. We serve you.

As always, we will have ground rules for the Town Hall, expecting open, respectful, and kind conversation that doesn't point fingers, accuse, complain, or relive history. We respect differing perspectives and agree to learn from one another. We focus only on what is best for our community. We agree to enter as friends and colleagues and to leave as friends and colleagues.

We know this is short notice, but we want to have this meeting before certain legislative deadlines next week. We hope you can join us!

Gate Communications is a local non-profit that provides a wide variety of services for the greater Deaf Community, including training and support for sign language interpreters. They host an annual training that welcomes sign language interpreters nationally and internationally for an intensive workshop on interpreting for concerts, theatre and musical theatre. Last week, we were happy to welcome this year’s group for a backstage tour of the Schermerhorn. Workshop participants got a behind-the-scenes tour, interviewed staff, and got a feel for signing on stage!

All Family Series concerts and some community concerts like Let Freedom Sing include ASL interpreting and closed captioning. Check out our Accessibility page (https://bit.ly/30vqwFo) and our Sensory Friendly page (https://bit.ly/2TVy0PM) to learn more about the ever-expanding resources we provide.
Mama Sam! Could you please repost the video you did last year of how to interpret "Feliz Navidad"? I thought I saved it, but I can't find it.
Thank you, Gate Communications for the gift I received in the mail today and Jodi Upton for nominating me for this "Love a Terp Project." This was such a kind gesture. ~Daniel

Mom locked him in the barn for 3 years. But we found him.

Often times it's easy to focus on the challenges the Deaf face in America, but the challenges here so often pale in comparison to the rest of the world, and that is easily forgotten. Gate has worked in other countries, and with people from many nations around the globe, and we have heard stories that baffle our American minds. The oppression, the abuse, the neglect, the lack of accessibility to things our Deaf Community finds easily accessible here after so many years of fighting for Deaf rights, all of it seems unconscionable and impossible in 2022, yet it still occurs today. The Deaf often face insurmountable biases and neglect in other nations, and it is, at times, so far beyond what we can even fathom in America. Those stories are heart wrenching to see, but they need to be seen, and hopefully more people will reach out to help the Deaf worldwide. This is one such story.

This young man who is Deaf was kept locked away in a barn for 3 years by his mother. He didn't have a bathroom in the barn. He couldn't bathe in the barn. He was barely given food. His mother used as an excuse that she was "scared of him". His brother solicited some helpers to come and save his abused younger brother... and they rose to the occasion. They pulled him out of his "home environment", found him a new home, bathed groomed and clothed him, fed him, and even bought him a phone and hearing aids. These people put out effort so few ever would.

We are grateful that someone cared enough to help members of this forgotten community. Watch Egor's story today, and if you ever have a chance to impact the Deaf Community in other nations, please do:

Oscar-winning US actor Louise Fletcher dies at home in south France

The most famous CODA in American history has died at her farm in the South of France at the age of 88. Louise Fletcher was only the third woman in history to win an Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe for the same performance. She was the first to sign at the Oscars.

Louise came from incredibly famous Deaf parents in Northern Alabama. Her parents founded more than 40 churches for the Deaf in Alabama, leaving a tremendous legacy in the South. Her family did not expect or know she would sign to them at the Oscars. In those days Deafness was still quite hidden. A friend interpreted her speech for the family, as it was of course not close captioned, and when they saw her words, they cried.

Louise was a regular member of the Star Trek cast, and one of the only members Mama Sam did not have the pleasure of working with and one she always wanted to meet. Louise will be missed, and she and her family will forever be in the hearts of the Deaf Community in the South.

You can watch her Oscar speech in the article below.

QUEEN ELIZABETH DEAD AT 96

As many of you know Queen Elizabeth was the daughter-in-law of one of the most remarkable and famous Deaf people in history, Princess Alice of Greece. Princess Alice walked HRH Queen Elizabeth down the aisle at Elizabeth's coronation, something no other Deaf individual has done in history. We are sad to see her go and are thankful for the legacy she leaves.

For those of you who do religious interpreting... we ran into this incredibly sweet lady who asked about our workshops, and we mentioned that a lot of interpreters worry about distraction more than matching the passion and power of the performers or speakers. LOL she wanted to tell those church interpreters her opinion of that. She was very excited to make this video for them.

08/10/2022

Had a chat with a professor about how interpreters often feel like they should hold still to be less of a distraction while interpreting concerts. Lol this is his response:
