Happy Mother's Day. Mothers and Children have been some of my favorite themes through the years.

A shout-out of appreciation goes to the Gospel Rescue Mission in Grants Pass, Oregon. Thanks to Monica Conley and her team and all they do to help people through significant life struggles, doing the hard work, and giving guidance in pointing people to the One who can transform lives! It was heartwarming to hear how God is working in this place! This mural of Jesus and the Children is now in the children's playroom of the mission. Some helpful ladies who assisted me in putting the mural up are pictured here.

Nehemiah's Art is announcing a Humboldt Summer Weekend Drawing & Painting Workshop! This June 23rd & 24th at Nehemiah's Art in Fortuna, a Small Group (up to seven participants) Workshop is open for new and past Art Students ages 12 through adult. This Workshop is for beginning and intermediate levels.

This Weekend Workshop starts on a Friday evening from 6-9 PM (the Tea & Coffee Bar is open). Students decide on their individual weekend projects and begin painting with guidance from the instructor. We paint to the sound of classical music. The Saturday morning session starts promptly at 9 AM with pastries, fruit & coffee. During the noon break, make-your-own sandwiches are available, and a time to interact with other art students. Art materials are included in the $125 tuition fee. The Workshop concludes at 3 PM.

There will be two tracks for this Workshop. Track 1 will be a guided step-by-step tutorial on a traditional still-life painting of local fruit & flowers. Track 2 is where the participant chooses their own subject matter, either from reference photos of their choosing or from their imagination (or a combination of both).

What will be covered in this Workshop?

The three "I"s: ideas, inspiration, and imagination in Art.
Basic artistic concepts of line, form, composition & color.
Problem-solving and multiple solutions.
The benefits of seeing the natural world through an artistic lens.

After yesterday's Art Discovered collaborative enterprise here at the River Lodge in Fortuna, I have a big smile on my face and heart. The afternoon was a busy beehive of activity around the art tables where children, students, and adults could "discover" various art activities. The project tables (and fantastic art coaches) included: torn paper pictures, cardboard sculpture, cartooning, clay sculpture, leaf pencil rubbings, coloring books of famous paintings, straw-blowing painting, digital Art, calligraphy, and painting without brushes. Coaches included teachers, retired teachers, a certified art therapist, media specialists, and some terrific volunteers from many walks of life - all connected with Fortuna Sunrise Rotary. There are so many people to thank for making this event come together. Thank you also to the parents who brought out their children and all who came out and supported this community effort!

Art Discovered - an Art Event for the whole family. There are interactive hands-on art projects for the children at the event. Admission is $10 and for those under 12 the event is free! Come enjoy being a part of the creative community Sunday afternoon April 23rd at the River Lodge!

Join Sherlock and the Fortuna Sunrise Rotary in a current Art Discovery Investigation here on the North Coast! On the afternoon of Sunday, April 2023, from 2-6 PM, this adventure will take place at the River Lodge in Fortuna. The whole family is invited to attend and participate in this intriguing, classic, and fun art event.
The admission fee is ($12) per person (age 12 and over). Children under 12 are free. Admission includes art materials for children and student onsite projects and a culinary spread of hors d'oeuvres, cookies, chips, and soft drinks. Wine is available for purchase.
Upon arrival, you will experience a venue full of Art from local artists and various original Art and print reproductions from artists far and near. You will have the opportunity to vote for your favorite work of Art. In addition, a dedicated area of interactive Art activities will be available for children and students.
An Arts Resource table is planned with the goal of connecting families and individuals to local Arts Programming, Arts Teachers, Educators, Instructors, and Classes. Arts Programming may include visual Art, music, dance, and drama, among other community offerings.
Art will be available for purchase, as well as a Gift Shop of art-themed merchandise, frames, and art supplies that cater to the student or emerging artist.
One of the goals of Art Discovered is to raise scholarships for lessons in the arts for children, students, and adults. Through the Arts, we learn not only to express ourselves creatively but to learn problem-solving skills, paths to innovation, connection, and a world of exciting discovery. We hope you will join us in seeking to enrich the community with an emphasis on the Arts and, in particular, to build into the lives of the next generation.

My website has had a makeover! I'm happy to share it with you here. With great anticipation, I am looking forward to opening some Art Classes and Weekend Workshops in the Spring! Until then, I am busily working on a large mural, another portrait commission, and a major Art Event in the community. I'm excited! Then, Lord willing, let's do some Art Classes together! Sometimes I'm just overwhelmed with appreciation for my parents. Of course I miss my dad greatly and my mother is up in years and is facing the challenges that come with advanced age. My parents LOVED books. Every room except the restrooms and kitchen had bookshelves of some kind. My parents LOVED giving me art books on many Christmases. Thankfully they would write an inscription on the inside pages. I treasure this about my upbringing and I've used these books throughout my life. Now we have amazing uses of technology and I use them as well. But hands down these books are my "go to" and I'm just so thankful. I should have posted this before Christmas to encourage book giving. It's hard to give away books these days, but they are still incredibly valuable to me.

Facebook friends, in preparation for a local art event, I am starting to compile a list of those individuals and businesses in the Eel River Valley who provide lessons in the arts. These may be private or group lessons for children, students, or adults. I'm speaking about all of the arts - drawing & painting, music, dance, writing, theatre, or some other field of art. Stretching a 17+ foot canvas to paint a mural that will be transported to another location for installation took some mental gymnastics! This guy is brilliant and came up with a smart plan. Thank you Pep'e Fregeau Jr.

This is a happy place for me on a blustery and rain soaked day. Natural lighting is vital for accurate color formation. I'm thankful for the technology that mimics natural daylight on dark days. It's a good time to be an artist. 🎨

As I explore the area of reproducing artwork on textiles, I order some pieces to examine the accuracy of the color and the quality of the fabric. I do like these scarves. One design is from a "detail" of a painting (meaning that it is printed from a section of the image). As such, my signature is repeated throughout the scarf design with the date I finished the image: 7/2020. It reminded me that although "2020" had its share of challenges, there were some "silver linings" to those dark clouds. For example, I had more time to paint, and this painting from which the design is derived is one of the results. I'll add an Etsy link in the comments.
