Today H had his birthday walk. I love the Montessori way of celebrating birthdays. It comes with the earth, the sun, and a year by year memory. @floydmontessori
“Maria Montessori spent most of her life observing children and studying how they grow and develop,” said Ella Zander, the school’s certified lead teacher of the eight primary class students (ages 3 – 6). “Before her research, pre-schools did not have child-size furniture. Nobody had even considered it.” -

To all my Floyd Montessori families, if you haven't heard of this yet, please check it out! I have been working on this huge project for the last year, my first professional album "It's You I Like". It's been an incredibly important project for me and the children who participated, including 3 FM students: Hazel Willoughby, Morgan Anderson and Skye Bianco. Let me tell you, this is the best gift I know of to give to all the young children (2-12) in your life, both in Floyd and beyond. Besides the fact that it features me, : ), there are so many reasons to love it. The musicianship is incredible. It's production sets it apart from all other children's music because it done by my new friend Ken Whiteley. (Remember Raffi's Baby Beluga? That's Ken!) It features the singing of Floyd children, and lots of Floyd children's self-portraits and artwork on the cover. (Rashmi's daughter Gallia's is prominent on the back. ) All the songs have positive messages, and just listening to it gives children and adults more emotional awareness and tools for self-regulation. And, oh yeah, IT'S FUN!! How many good things could there be on one album? Your kids will be singing things you will be happy to hear come out of their mouths for many months and years to come. From me to my Floyd community with LOVE! I hope you will check out the sample tracks below. There are some for sale in the office, or you can order form my website. You'll get free delivery through the holidays, and a portion is kicked back to the school for more music classes. I'll be back in the classroom in January! www.HeartoftheChildMusic.com
Elementary students found this Luna moth caterpillar on the playground today! We now have Eastern swallowtail caterpillars, a tiger swallowtail, and this guy living safely and comfortably in our butterfly cages.
Here's a project that one of my friends form the Children's Music Network is involved in. Anyone at Floyd Montessori want to participate? I can deliver a rope to Sarah when I see her in October.
Seeking infants, toddlers, and preschoolers and their caregivers to participate in an online research study designed to assist with understanding sensory processing. Online questionnaires take about 15-30 mins to complete and children need to be enrolled in daycare and/or be taken care of at least part-time by a caregiver other than his or her parents. Enrolled participants receive a Target gift card. For more information, please contact [email protected]. Thanks!
As the school year approaches.......some inspiration and a solemn reminder to Montessorians out there from the American Montessori Society. May peace prevail!

Dear Fellow Montessorians,

The tragic events in Charlottesville have once again brought matters of race, of religion, of thought, and of character to the forefront of the American discussion.

As I reflect on recent events, in Virginia and overseas, I am reminded that we are in dire need of Dr. Montessori’s wisdom in regards to peace, social justice, respect, and grace and courtesy.

As you know, peace and social justice are at the core of Montessori education, woven into the fabric of our school culture. It is not taught in isolation; peace occurs daily as children engage in their work and in the relationships they create with others and the environment.

Now more than ever I am convinced that we, as Montessori educators and advocates, must continue to champion and even redouble our efforts to bring peace into our classrooms, and by extension, our shared community.

Let me be clear: white supremacy, white nationalism, anti-Semitism, and fascist and intolerant slogans have no place in our community. They are antithetical to our society’s values of respect, integrity, diversity, responsibility, and inclusiveness.

We can be the difference so that tomorrow’s leaders will not see through the lens of hate, but instead look to peace, empathy, understanding, and love as the values to which they turn to solve their community’s problems. For again, Dr. Montessori’s words ring true:

“Education is the best weapon for peace.”

Part of the mission of the American Montessori Society is to provide you with the resources you need to champion Montessori values in your classroom and the world beyond. I encourage you to visit these sites to find inspiration for promoting peace in your schools.

I'm confident you will begin this new school year well prepared and actively involved in the conversations your students and fellow educators are having surrounding the violence and terror in Charlottesville, and the wave of hate that seems to be permeating throughout America and beyond its borders.

“The child is both a hope and a promise for mankind,” Dr. Montessori wrote. It is up to us to see that our children fulfill that promise for themselves and their posterity.

Join me in approaching this charge with passionate determination and optimism.

Sincerely,

Timothy J. Purnell, EdD
Executive Director

Summer Camp – Floyd Montessori

Registration is now open for summer camps! View pricing and print the registration form on our website.

June 4th – 8th, Fairy and Dragon Camp: Our beloved fairy-themed camp returns with a new twist. Learn about the folklore of these and other mythological creatures. Create your own legendary creature and invent a mythology all your own! This camp will involve lots of art and imaginary play as we create our own wings, costumes, and more. Build in our fairy village or create your dragon’s lair.

June 11th – 15th, Harry Potter Camp: Welcome to Floyd’s own Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry! Students will be sorted into Houses and decorate their very own wand. We’ll experiment in Potions class and go on scavenger hunts with the help of the Marauder’s Map. And, of course, we’ll play Quidditch! (On the ground unfortunately.)

June 18th – 22nd, Mad Science Week: Be prepared to embark on a series of science adventures! Mad Science Week delivers exciting hands-on and interactive scientific activities and experiments. Students will spend their days becoming scientific detectives to investigate many aspects of the world around them. They will overcome a series of challenges using basic materials and participate in missions to spark their imaginative learning!

July 2nd – 6th, Superhero Camp: Calling all aspiring superheroes! We welcome those with and without special powers alike to this week-long superhero training camp. Students will invent their own superhero identity, complete with masks, props, and capes. We will work on our strength and agility with obstacle courses and other games. Most importantly, we will talk about the values that make a real hero, and how we can be superheroes in everyday life.

July 9th – 13th, Wacky Water Week: Splish Splash, water is everywhere! Let’s take a week to get wacky with water! Make sure students come prepared to be wet this week! Bathing suits are recommended, extra clothes, and definitely a towel! Students will participate in games, activities, exploration and experiments all incorporating, you guessed it, WATER throughout their day!

July 16th – 20th, Star Wars Camp: Learn the ways of the Jedi! Young Padawans will build their own lightsabers and train with them daily, beginning with morning meditation to connect us with the Force. We’ll practice with obstacle courses, agility games, and pod-racing. Afternoons will include crafts like building your own R2 droid and freezing your face in (paper mache) carbonite. Join us in a summer camp far, far away…
