Are you familiar with the phrase 'Compound Exercise'? Even if you aren't, you've probably done some! Simply put, compound exercises are ones that work a number of muscle groups at the same time. One of the primary benefits of compound exercises is that they are very efficient, and can be key if you have limited time to work out. Common compound exercises include squats, deadlifts, pull ups, and bench presses. If you are interested in incorporating new compound exercises, make sure you do so slowly, safely, and ideally with the help of a trainer.

With Thanksgiving this Thursday, we wanted to highlight a Turkey Day staple, Cranberries! Known as a superfruit, they are great sources of vitamins and antioxidants and historically used for a variety of stomach, bladder, and kidney issues, and more recently have been found to possibly help people manage their blood pressure and even reduce BMI!

Have you tried power walking? While it may seem like a simple exercise, it can provide an effective workout for people at a variety of fitness levels.
In addition to helping people lose weight and reduce their risk for diabetes, power walking has also been shown to reduce a person's risk for high blood pressure and cholesterol and even to be good for your bones!
If it's been a while since you've gone for a power walk, we highly recommend getting out there (or in there at a local gym or mall walking program, etc.)

A key factor and precursor to Type 2 Diabetes is Insulin Resistance, often associated with obesity, high blood pressure, high LDL, "bad" cholesterol, and low HDL, "good" cholesterol. Unfortunately, people cannot tell if they are living with insulin resistance based on how they feel. If your doctor observes several of the conditions listed above, they may encourage you to get a blood sugar level test. Next week, we'll be back with more information about the treatment and prevention of insulin resistance.
