Wellspring Lutheran Services opens Michigan’s first recovery high school

In a time where we are more isolated than ever -- and mental health issues and drug use are at all-time highs -- we are grateful for ABC12: WJRT-TV and Dawn Jones for bringing light to Dakota and Andy’s story.

Substance use knows no boundaries. It sneaks its way into the lives of families, and quietly dismantles the Hope of a shared future.

After seeing the impact of addiction on our youth, Wellspring knew it was time to change the narrative in Michigan. We reached deep into the community; into the lives of families; into the school systems and treatment centers; and found voices to help us launch Michigan’s first standalone public recovery high school.

Please take a moment and watch this story of Dakota’s life. Then, let us have a conversation about how we can help you or maybe a loved one who is battling addiction. There is a path forward -- and it's filled with hope and purpose. And we can’t wait to celebrate that future with you.

Superintendent at Wayne RESA shows support for Wellspring Academy, Michigan's first recovery high school for teens

Wellspring Academy is invested in the future of Michigan's teens who are walking their recovery journey. We couldn't launch Michigan's first public recovery high school without the support of so many. One of which is the support from those at Wayne RESA, a regional educational service agency that provides a broad range of services and support to Wayne County's 33 school districts. Here’s Randy Liepa, superintendent of Wayne RESA with some words of support for Wellspring Academy.

"Students who have made a commitment to sobriety, and have begun the tough journey of recovery, don't stand a chance if they're forced back to their school of origin simply because they don't have a choice. In fact, we know that 70% of those students will relapse within six months," says Wellspring Lutheran Services president and CEO, David Gehm. "Our commitment to launch Wellspring Academy comes from knowing that we must do better for them and is consistent with Wellspring's longstanding focus on serving those in our communities whose needs are not being met. At Wellspring Academy, students will find a place where they can find and fulfill their purpose, with a community who will love and support them every step of the way."

Wellspring Academy | Meet the COO

Meet Brian Spitsbergen, COO at Wellspring Academy.

“As a person in long-term recovery, I achieved sobriety at the age of 16. Each day, I live through what it takes to maintain a recovery lifestyle. Treatment and sobriety did not come easy. Despite having some successes, in retrospect, I now realize how fortunate and fragile early recovery was for me — especially when it came to being reintegrated into society once the treatment experience was over. I am vividly aware to this day just how stressful and unprepared I was to deal with a society that, on a day-to-day basis, was not adequately equipped to deal with some of the emotional and developmental challenges I brought back into the academic environment. At the time when I got sober, there was no support system that existed for a young person in my situation.” - BRIAN SPITSBERGEN, Ph.D, LPC, CAADC

Wellspring Lutheran Services Launches Michigan's First Recovery High School

Identifying unmet needs in the community and meeting them is something Wellspring Lutheran Services has been doing for more than 125 years. It’s the heart behind everything we do.

As we looked at the staggering statistics surrounding deaths by overdose, we saw that substance-related deaths in teens was skyrocketing. When you consider that 90 percent of adults who have a substance use disorder started using while they were in high school, we quickly recognized there was an unmet need.

So, how do we help addicted teens change the trajectory of their lives? We walk beside them as they walk through recovery. Today, we are honored to share with you that Wellspring is officially launching Wellspring Academy -- Michigan’s first public recovery high school.

The mission of Wellspring Academy is to provide a safe, sober and supportive academic environment where students can achieve their highest level of educational success and personal recovery.

You’re probably wondering what a recovery high school is and how it is different than a traditional high school. We hope you will take the time to watch this video, visit our website at www.wellspringacademy.com, and begin following our new Wellspring Academy social media pages.

We invite you to go on this journey with us. There are too many people dying, and Wellspring wants to take a stand. We hope you will join us. One life lost is one life too many.

** A special thank you to our partners who have provided start up funding - the Michigan Health Endowment Fund and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. The academic offering of Wellspring Academy is supported by the Michigan International Prep School.
