The school’s founder, Sister Saint Louis Paquette S.S.J., along with her Co-Montessori Teacher Sister Yvette LeClair S.S.J., ran the program until June of 1992. “The child is endowed with unknown powers, which can guide us to a radiant future. If what we really want is a new world, then education must take as its aim the development of these hidden possibilities.” - Maria Montessori
Children attending Montessori settings are encouraged to be independent in every aspect of their life. They are given opportunities to make choices about their activities, and therefore spontaneous engagements with the environment and child-led activities flourish.
Congratulations to TMSA alumnus Luke Cambra.
The Algebraic Peg Board gives the child a visual concept of square roots by building squares and extracting the square root from that square. The board with 900 holes is used in the exercises of finding square root.

Today is recognized as National Vietnam Veterans Day. It’s a day that we pay tribute to the more than 3 million servicemen and women who left their families to serve bravely, a world away from everything they knew and everyone they loved. From Ia Drang to Khe Sanh, from Hue to Saigon and countless villages in between, they pushed through jungles and rice paddies, heat and monsoon, fighting heroically to protect the ideals we hold dear as Americans. Through more than a decade of combat, over air, land, and sea, these proud Americans upheld the highest traditions of our Armed Forces. THANK YOU!
Celebrating Women’s history month, Lower El students read a biography of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. Students learned her unique style of art that was created by overcoming the obstacles in her life. They also had a great time making beautiful Frida Kahlo art piece.
The Montessori Method, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori and put into use for the first time in 1907, is based on the idea of self-education. Rather than sitting still and absorbing lessons taught by a teacher, the child in the Montessori classroom educates himself with the teacher as his guide. Individual lessons are given regularly throughout the day whenever a child is ready or seeks interest in moving on to a new concept or more advanced phase of what they are working on. Free time is “work” time in a Montessori classroom and the students have great fun exploring various topics in all areas by not being restricted and being able to further their interests.
Reading and writing are sometimes taken for granted by adults who have mastered the skills—but looking at them from a child’s perspective, they are skills of Herculean difficulty. Literacy is a complicated, integrative process that involves the association of symbols with sounds, sounds with words, and words with ideas. It means learning to fluidly encode ideas into symbols and decode symbols into ideas. And, on top of everything, it involves acquiring complex physical production skills, such as the fine motor skills involved in writing with a pen or pencil.
The Montessori approach uses a distinct set of practices that nurture a positive, natural learning experience to teach reading and writing. The Montessori curriculum is thoughtfully built around teaching children the many elements of reading and writing one by one, in a way accessible to and enjoyable by a child. It’s amazing to experience children master literacy with joy.
Yesterday was National Puppy Day! We’d love to see some TMSA family puppies.

The main purpose of a Montessori school is to provide a carefully planned, stimulating environment which will help the child develop an excellent foundation for creative learning.

The older students have been assigned preschool/kindergarten Reading Buddies. It’s been a few years since we’ve been able to incorporate this program due to Covid restrictions and it’s something the older students have missed. They all have fond memories of their own “Buddies”. Through this program the older student learns patience and understanding for those who are still learning. The younger student more readily accepts direction from their older peers. It builds better social and academic skills as they develop new friendships and lifelong memories.
Why is Montessori the best approach for my child? Check out this article to get some insight.
