NHEC 18th NEW MEXICO ENVIRONMENTAL STEM INSTITUTE NOVEMBER 5-13, 2022
https://nheec1.org/nhec-18th-nm-fact-sheet

To Students, Educators, Environmental Organizations, and other entities:

For those who may not have seen our earlier emails, the National Hispanic Environmental Council (NHEC) is holding its 18th New Mexico Environmental STEM Institute on November 5-13, 2022 at various sites in Northern New Mexico. NHEC is still accepting applications from top undergraduate college STEM students, especially from people of color and underrepresented communities.

As with all our Institutes over the last 21 years, NHEC covers all costs -- airfare, meals, housing, science equipment, more -- for those selected to attend. There is no fee to apply or attend. Students are competitively selected from across the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

Regarding eligibility -- students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA; love science and be passionate about the environment; pursuing a science degree in an environmental, natural resource, or agricultural major; possess science-relevant academic coursework; and possess relevant environmental experience(s), past or present. As this is a federally funded program students must either be US Citizens or Legal Permanent Residents to be selected.

The Institute will be in Albuquerque for the first few days, then move on to a hotel in Santa Fe and other sites in northern NM for the remainder of the program.

NHEC Institutes are an intensive, science-heavy, hands-on, 9 day, residential environmental STEM program. Taught by NHEC's skilled Instructors, many with Ph.D's, the Institutes feature multiple high-level presentations on environmental/natural resource issues, environmental science principles, and related field methodologies. The Institutes are designed to give students a high-level, high-quality science experience.

A core element is the Environmental Field Studies, where students conduct air, water, soil testing, plant/vegetation surveys, tree mensuration, and more, with professional-grade science equipment and instrumentation, including for example eDNA. Other learning includes site visits/field exploration on public and private lands; learning/conducting experiments at a federal research lab; sessions on federal internships/jobs in enviro/natural resource STEM fields, and more. Another core element is the active participation of role models--scientists and researchers, especially those of color -- from Institute sponsors and other partners who attend to engage/mentor/share information with the students.

Overall, Institutes are designed to help build the next generation of scientists, researchers, and professionals of color in environmental, natural resource, and agriculture science fields, an area within STEM that still remains severely underrepresented for people of color.

Students should note that the Institute’s federal sponsors will be on-site to actively meet/recruit students for new federal opportunities emerging in internships and jobs, science and technology, climate change and environmental justice, and more.

Regarding Covid--the NM and later NHEC Institutes will be in-person, not virtual. Therefore, to participate students must be fully vaccinated; submit a copy of their CDC card providing proof of vaccination; and follow CDC and State covid guidelines in effect at that time.

Please see the attached NM Institute Fact Sheet for more information on the Institutes, NHEC, and how to apply. Qualified students should act promptly on this unique opportunity, as slots are going fast.

Finally, we ask that you kindly forward this information on to interested students and related colleges, organizations, and more. NHEC thanks you for your help.

NHEC announces the 17TH ANNUAL NM ENVIRONMENTAL STEM INSTITUTE AUGUST 6-15, 2021

Photos from The National Hispanic Environmental Council - NHEC's post 11/27/2019

To Students, Educators, Environmental Organizations, and other Interested Parties:

For those who may not have seen our earlier emails, the National Hispanic Environmental Council (NHEC) is still accepting applications from top college STEM students (and a limited number of STEM-focused seniors in high school) for its upcoming NJ Environmental STEM Institute.

The Institute will be held December 6--10, 2019, in partnership with our two federal sponsors -- the U.S. Forest Service and U.S. EPA. The main Institute training sites are the high-tech EPA Region 2 Main Laboratory in Edison, NJ and the Silas Little Experimental Forest and Lab in New Lisbon, NJ, located about 50 miles apart. Students will travel by chartered bus to these locations and others.

This Institute is an intensive, science-heavy, hands-on 5 day long residential environmental STEM program offering presentations on environmental science principles, procedures, and topics; environmental field studies (air, water, soil testing, more); lab testing of samples/specimens collected from the field studies; sessions on federal internships/jobs in enviro STEM fields; an interview session where students, especially those from diverse backgrounds, can engage with and receive career/research guidance from professionals, scientists and researchers from EPA, FS, and elsewhere, and more.

This Institute is similar in format and goals to NHEC's other rigorous, multi-day Environmental STEM Institutes using professional-grade enviro science equipment which NHEC has been holding for over 12 years at national parks, forests, other public lands, federal research labs, and more, all in scenic sites in New Mexico, California, Oregon, and New York. These institutes are 8--11 days long; NHEC is offering this NJ Institute as a shortened but still highly valuable version of these.

To be eligible students must be aged 18--22; be declared in a relevant environmental or natural resource science major in college; have a minimum 3.0 GPA; love science; and be passionate about the environment. Students will be competitively selected from across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Through funding from our sponsors FS and EPA, NHEC covers all costs --airfare, meals, housing, more-- for those selected to attend. As this is a federally funded program the Institute is open to all and all students are welcome to apply (must be US Citizens or Legal Permanent Residents). There is no fee to apply and no fee to attend.

See the attached document for more information on the Institute, the 5 day program, and how to apply. Slots still remain--however interested/qualified students must act promptly on this unique opportunity. Finally, we ask that you please forward this on to interested students and related colleges, organizations, and more. Thank you.

THE NHEC NY/NJ ENVIRONMENTAL STEM INSTITUTE

Thursday--December 20, 2018--9—5 pm

Dear Students, Educators, and Community/Environmental Leaders:

The National Hispanic Environmental Council (NHEC) announces it is still accepting applications from qualified college students, as well as select high school seniors, especially from diverse backgrounds, to attend our upcoming NY/NJ Environmental STEM Institute to be held 9—5 pm on Thursday, December 20, 2018.
NHEC is holding this intensive one day regional event in conjunction with our two federal sponsors--the NJ State Office of the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, and Region 2 of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (NY, NJ, Puerto Rico, and Virgin Islands). Both NRCS and U.S. EPA are long-term sponsors of NHEC’s various Environmental STEM Institutes.

The NY/NJ Institute will be held in two parts (a morning and afternoon session). The morning session will be at NRCS’s NJ State Office in Somerset, NJ; the afternoon session at the U.S. EPA Region 2’s Laboratory, operated by their Division of Environmental Science and Assessment/Office of Research and Development, in Edison, NJ. Note that Somerset and Edison are close (6 miles apart), both located in northern NJ, and about 35 miles from NYC.

Accompanied by NHEC staff, NHEC will transport those students selected to and from each site by chartered bus; provide lunch and dinner; and coordinate all logistics/travel for students. At the conclusion of the Institute students will depart for home from the EPA Lab in Edison, NJ by either chartered bus, or by other means as agreed to/arranged by NHEC.

Regarding selection and criteria to the Institute: students are competitively selected from across the Northeast Region and Puerto Rico based on the following: have a minimum 3.0 GPA; must be demonstrably pursuing an environmental or natural resource related major in the sciences; possess relevant environmental experience and environmental academic STEM coursework; and be passionate about the environment.
Again, the main sponsors are the USDA NRCS and U.S. EPA. With funding from these agencies NHEC covers all costs—travel costs, meals, local transportation, more---to attend.

This Institute is one of several Environmental STEM Institutes – held in New Mexico, California, Oregon, and New York -- that NHEC runs each summer as we pursue our mission of addressing underrepresentation issues in STEM and the environment, and help building the next generation of diverse/minority environmental professionals and especially scientists.

Regarding eligibility—students are competitively selected based on the above criteria. As this is a federally-funded program all students who meet the criteria and are U.S. Citizens or Legal Permanent Residents are welcome to apply. There is no fee to apply and no fee to attend.

The NY/NJ Institute is an intensive, strongly science-based, hands-on, one day long environmental/conservation education and environmental career program for top college STEM students, aged 17-22, deeply interested in and actively pursuing an environmental related career in the sciences.
NHEC notes this Institute is being held in place of our usual multi-day NY Institute held in the summer. For the last 12 years NHEC has held its residential, 8 day long NY Environmental STEM Institute from the end of June into July. However, changing federal funding priorities this year caused delays, with the result being this intensive one day program being held in December.

At this Institute accepted students will participate in a series of presentations conducted by NRCS and EPA staff on a range of environmental and conservation science topics, especially those related to the mission, science, and research of our two sponsors. Students will also see, learn, and use sophisticated, professional-grade environmental science equipment from these agencies. Both the NRCS office and EPA laboratory will offer STEM students an exciting range of science, research, and environmental methodologies to discover and build on.

Further—also participating are a number of role models from the agencies and others. These are environmental professionals, many from the science/research arena, and many themselves of diverse backgrounds. They will be on-site to share information and engage/guide/inspire students to continue pursuing their environmental/conservation science majors and careers. This “role model” component – in place so students can see faces that look like them who actually do environmental work -- has been a long-standing, vital element of all our Institutes.

There will also be a session where students receive career presentations on a range of federal hiring authorities, like Pathways, Resource Assistant, and more, so students can learn about these federal internships, jobs, volunteer, science, and other opportunities, and how to apply. Please read, like and share!! Portland, here we come!!

Dear Students, Educators, and Community/Environmental Leaders:

The National Hispanic Environmental Council (NHEC) announces it is accepting preliminary applications from qualified college students to attend our first annual Pacific Northwest Environmental STEM Institute, to be held June 2—10, 2018 at national forests, parks, laboratories, and other environmental sites in Portland, OR and nearby areas.

Students will be competitively selected from across the U.S. and Puerto Rico; must have a minimum 3.0 GPA; be demonstrably pursuing an environmental or natural resource related major; and possess relevant environmental experiences and academic background.

The main sponsor for the PNW Institute is Region 6 of the U.S. Forest Service (states of Oregon and Washington); with additional support from the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service. With funding from sponsors NHEC covers all costs—airfare, housing, meals, science equipment, and more--to attend.

Students selected will be housed and fed, and coursework/presentations held at the University of Portland, in Portland, OR. This is a private Catholic university overlooking the scenic Willamette River. In the PNW Institute students will conduct formal Environmental Science Field Studies on a variety of federal and private lands in the Northwest ecosystem, and explore some of the most beautiful natural areas in the U.S., including the Columbia River Gorge, Mount Hood, and Mount Saint Helens.

This is one of 3 Environmental STEM Institutes -- in NY, NM, CA, and now OR – that NHEC runs each summer as we work to address under representation issues and build the next generation of Latino/minority environmental professionals and scientists. As to eligibility, this is a federally-funded program open to all students who are U.S. Citizens or Legal Permanent Residents in the 50 states and Puerto Rico.

The PNW Institute is an intensive, residential, strongly science-based, hands-on, 9 day long conservation education and conservation career program for top college STEM students, aged 17-22, deeply interested in and actively pursuing an environmental/conservation related career in the sciences.

Using our award-winning Environmental STEM curriculum taught by NHEC’s skilled instructors, many with Ph.D’s, students receive in-depth environmental and conservation presentations on issues/methodologies. Students conduct Environmental Field Studies (air, soil, water testing, plant inventories, tree ecology, biological assessments, birding, more) using professional-grade, often high-tech equipment. Students will also visit, learn, and use sophisticated environmental science equipment for data and specimen analysis in environmental laboratories.
Also participating are volunteer role models--environmental professionals, many from the sciences and of color--most especially from Region 6. They will be on-site to engage/guide/inspire students to continue pursuing an environmental/conservation science career. This “role model” component has been a long-standing, vital aspect of our Institutes.

PNW Institute students will also receive career presentations on a range of federal hiring authorities, like Pathways, Resource Assistant, and more. And finally--students will engage with FS Region 6 staff and others eager to talk to qualified, science-focused students about career, job, and science opportunities in the Northwest region in 2019 and beyond.

If interested, you will help yourself a great deal by answering the following preliminary questions and emailing NHEC asap. This will give NHEC a quick overview of your eligibility and especially qualifications, and save you time and effort.
