Honors College students have had the opportunity to learn about the first-generation college student experience in a section of HRNS 131: Contemporary Social Issues. The section titled First-Gen College Students is a “safe place for first-generation students to openly discuss their experiences,” said Zainab Samsudeen. There is an abundance of experience and representation of first-generation college students here at Mason with 40% of students identifying as being the first in their family to attend college.

“We examine and discuss the difficulties this diverse group of first-generation college students face and also some of the key perspectives that they bring into the classroom”

Meet Mimi Benjelloun!
🎓Year: Freshman
📘Major: Nursing- Direct Entry B.S.N

What are your summer highlights?
I’ve spent my summer going on different vacations (such as Ocean City, Maryland and Clearwater, Florida). As well as making memories with my hometown friends before we go off to college. And of course, I’ve been working a lot at a local Irish pub and my mom’s preschool.

Do you like the summer heat?
I love the heat! Summer is most definitely my favorite season. I love to go tanning and spend my days outside. I also enjoy summertime storms a lot.

What is something new you learned over summer?
This summer I learned how to enjoy the little things. I have wanted to make this summer the best since it’s the “last childhood” summer before going off into the big , wide world. I have spent lots of time just embracing every moment, even the boring ones. I learned this summer that everything does not have to be so fast paced.

What are you looking forward to this upcoming fall semester?
I am so excited to meet new people and make lots of friends this upcoming fall semester. I want to make the most out of my college experience and embrace everything. Even though school can be tough, I am very excited to learn coursework that will inspire my future and expand my mind.

Meet Alissa Nguyen!
🎓Year: Freshman
📘Major: Direct Entry Nursing

What are your summer highlights?
Back in June, I got my first job as a camp counselor and met many amazing people and created new relationships! It was a great opportunity for me as I’m thinking of going into pediatric nursing so working with kids really solidified my decision. I’ve also recently been to VA beach. As a native to NOVA (northern Virginia), it’s a must that I visit this beach every now and then!

Are you a summer person?
As much as I enjoy summer activities, I’m definitely more of a winter person (with my birthday being in January). I love the feeling of wearing long-sleeved pj’s by a fire, with a nice cup of hot coca in hand.

What is your favorite thing about summer?
My favorite thing about summer is staying up late talking to friends, playing video games, and binging shows. One show that I’ve recently been watching is Business Proposal on Netflix. I definitely recommend checking it out!

What tastes do you associate with summer?
I associate summer with fruity tastes like berries, and citrusy ones as well. Maybe the best way to describe it is a nice cold glass of lime sparkling water with some watermelon slices to go along with it.

What are you looking forward to this upcoming fall semester?
This fall I’m looking forward to meeting others in my major, establishing a routine, and long study sessions alone, or with new friends! I can’t wait to be a patriot and start my college experience here at George Mason HC!

This summer was probably the most active I’ve had in a while! I took a trip to NYC and D.C. for a day to visit my dream law schools and stop by the NMAAHC. Lastly, I spent time in Atlantic City for the 113th Annual NAACP Convention, where I and the GMU NAACP’s Treasurer served as youth delegates for the GMU and Fairfax NAACP Chapters! I did all of this while taking a summer class: ENGH 453, Fictions of the Cultural Encounter, where I read a lot of really interesting books, short stories, and poems.

As a native of Southern Georgia, I’m definitely used to the heat and enjoy it for the most part. However, I can’t wait for cooler Virginian winters and to see some snow!

Honors College Student Mazin Iqbal, was part of the Global Engagement Scholar Program where undergraduate students in George Mason University School of Business have an opportunity to examine their own biases, cultural values, and learn how to contribute to a dynamic and global workforce.
Iqbal, who recent graduated with a double-major in management information systems and business analytics says he really enjoyed learning more about cultural intelligence in the workplace. “Having the ability to apply what I've learned from the Global Engagement Scholars Program directly towards my personal, professional, and academic goals is super helpful,” say Iqbal. “The program helps build an understanding of different perspectives and provides a fresh sense of being able to navigate various cultures on a global scale.”
