The new interactive furniture in the Middle School Idea Lab is amazing. Tables you can write on (and wipe off), moveable charging stations and podiums, appropriately sized stools and seating, all work together to create a cohesive space that enhances creativity and fuels learning! Thanks to our generous donors who helped to fund this creative learning space.
No matter how cool the furniture is, it's the students and teachers who make the Idea Lab in the Middle School come alive. Check out how the new furniture is put to use!

[01/06/21]   A Message from the Head of School

Dear Friends,

Many of you know that I take great pride in my ties. They are often goofy and always conversation pieces; many of them are gifts, many of them are from previous generations (I am old enough that some of them have come back into style), and they are all meaningful.

Today, I purposely wore the one I bought during a visit with students early in my career to the US Capitol. Trips like that, seeing Washington through the eyes of children, are an inspiring reminder of who we are, who we should be and of what it means to aspire to great things.

This tie is adorned with American flags and a silhouette of the Capitol building, and I wore it on purpose today because the proceedings that ought to be happening in that building are fundamental to the world’s oldest democracy. It is symbolic of one of the things that makes America so rare-- the peaceful transfer of power.

By the time you read this, you will know what is happening today. It saddens me, and no matter what we think of this president, the Electoral College, or the November election, it should sadden all of us. It is inexcusably wrong, and it is not befitting of the principles for which our country should stand. Trust in our systems and leaders has been eroded. Differences have become seemingly insurmountable; value is placed on disagreeing rather than resolving differences. Pride is taken in causing difficulty, and it has become a badge of honor to object without espousing solutions.

I am moved to write, because as a historian I do not know where our country goes from here. But I very well know where we as a school will go. We will continue to stand for dialogue, for resolution, for respect. We will continue to prepare our students to play their rightful role in bringing resolution rather than conflict and solutions to even the most perplexing dilemmas.

Never has our nation needed creativity, courage and compassion more. Never has our mission been more important. Never have we been so committed to these principles.

Seth Hanford
Head of School

Happy New Year from all of us at Elgin Academy. Wishing you and your family joy and happiness in the coming year.

We are about to say good-bye to 2020, but before we do, please consider making a donation to the Hilltopper Fund. This unusual year, and the accompanying added financial stresses due to COVID-19, mean that our Hilltopper Fund is, especially now, extremely important. Your support is vital to our continuing efforts to offer the most meaningful experiences possible. Your gift will ensure that we can remain agile and adaptable as conditions change in this unprecedented time. Thank you

Congratulations to Audri Ajinth, a Sophomore at Elgin Academy, who was recently named a Delegate to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders to be held March 20th and 21st, 2021.

The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who want to become physicians or going to medical research fields. The purpose of this event is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the country interested in these careers, to stay true to their dream and, after the event, to provide a path, plan and resources to help them reach their goal.

Audri's nomination was signed by Dr. Mario Capecchi, winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine and the Science Director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists. Audri was chosen to represent Elgin Academy based on her academic achievement, leadership potential and determination to serve humanity in the field of medicine.

The phrase, “we are all together” has never been more meaningful and our mission of inspiring students to become our creative, courageous, and compassionate future has never been more important. As we approach the end of the year, please join the many community members who have given to this year’s Hilltopper Fund. Your tax-deductible donation is vital to our school. Thank you.

This unprecedented year has brought us together in ways we could not have imagined and our community has risen to all of the challenges with which 2020 has presented us. Our Hilltopper Fund must now fill in the gaps that have emerged because of additional expenses we have seen due to COVID-19. Your gift at this point, and the steadfast commitment it represents, means so much to our students, staff, faculty and, indeed, our entire institution. Thank you.

Earlier this month, students in the Upper School Service Club created holiday cards for local senior citizens. Today those cards were delivered to the Atrium at Oak Crest for distribution to all of their residents most of whom have not been able to receive visitors for many months due to COVID restrictions. They did a great job spreading some much needed holiday cheer!

Following a trend that started with college students in their Zoom classes as a way to give a socially distanced shout out to their professors, Elgin Academy's 8th Grade Language Arts students surprised their teachers with a warm "Thank You" celebration via Zoom today. The two sections of Language Arts taught by Ms. Brown and Ms. Chouinard have been combined over the last few weeks. The students wished to show their appreciation for all their teachers have done for them throughout this school year.

A school as old as Elgin Academy has many traditions and one of those wonderful traditions is Candlelighting. Each year, right before we all leave for winter break, we gather together as a community to celebrate the season with music, stories and some good cheer. Candlelighting started many years ago as a way to enjoy time together during the holiday season.

This year, like so many other traditions, Candlelighting had to be re-imagined. As a result we came up with a new way for us all to celebrate the joy of the season and the gathering (of a different kind) of us all in celebration of our Elgin Academy community.

We hope you enjoy this video featuring music from our Upper School Choir and preschool students, a popular holiday story read by EA's faculty and staff, and "of course" students lighting candles.

Wishing you and your family a wonderful and safe Holiday Season!

This week in Latin class, seventh grader Ashley McCormick (known in her Latin class as Livia Rutulia) and Magistra Howe undertook what turned into part Science experiment and part History lesson when they attempted to recreate an ancient version of the iPad! The ancient Romans created writing tablets using a mixture of heated beeswax and likely olive oil to form a reusable writing surface. Ashley and Magistra experimented with different amounts of each ingredient to find the perfect blend. They then heated the mixture and poured the liquid into a cardboard frame (it's likely the Roman's frames were made of wood). With trial and error, they found the perfect technique to create a tablet that, when written upon using a wooden stylus, can also be "erased" and used again. Makes you wonder if this is where Apple got the idea for the first digital tablet! Within the photos you'll find Ashley and Magistra's final product as well as actual tablets from Roman times and depictions of the tablets in Roman art.

Only $236 to go! We are very close to our original $50,000 goal. Our #GivingTuesday challenge match donor has graciously agreed to keep this campaign open a little longer in hopes that we can make that match.

It is not too late to make a gift that will be matched dollar for dollar, doubling your impact. Please help us reach $50.000 and turn it into $100,000 of much-needed support to help offset the additional expenditures Elgin Academy has incurred due to COVID-19.

Please visit our website to make a donation or pledge today. Thank you!

Operation "Move Our Bodies" continues at EA. Coach Katie Kruse led a group of EA students and Coach Williams in another yoga session today. Throughout this unusual year, the EA faculty and staff have worked with students to provide unique outlets to replace activities and opportunities for socializing that are no longer possible during the pandemic.

General information

At Elgin Academy, taking learning personally is more than a credo—it defines our promise to each and every student and family who calls EA home. Our classes remain small to ensure we know, listen, and respond to the voice of every child. Instead of finding cracks to fall through, our students cement relationships that build character, bravery, discipline, and trust over their time here. We help each student discover and pursue her emerging passions and interests—which can run the gamut from environmental science to social justice, international relations to sports medicine to videography— and our teachers, who know her exceedingly well, also know just how to inspire her to new heights. We closely follow—and, when needed, guide—her amazing progression from curious, wide-eyed preschooler to poised, articulate senior ready to make her mark on the world. And just as we insist our classes unfold as vivid conversations rather than rote lectures, we invite you into a conversation about how your family might fit at Elgin Academy. By far the best way to get that all- important feel for us is through a visit and a tour, which you can arrange through our Admission Office. Thank you for taking the time to learn a bit more about EA. We hope to meet you soon.
