This Friday!
We are offering a FREE online reading strategies workshop called "Read Like a Pro: Reading Strategies for YOUR Major!" We'll have a 20-minute guest speaker talk to us about the importance of not only general academic reading strategies but also discipline-specific reading strategies. Then we'll have six breakout sessions for you to choose from: Communications, Physics, Philosophy, Engineering, Mathematics, and Psychology. These breakout sessions will be lead by faculty from those fields – they'll show you the strategies they use as expert readers, and they'll invite you to practice right along with them! The workshop will take place via Zoom and a Blackboard course shell that you'll have access to after you register. The last time we ran this workshop it was a great success and students evaluated it very positively, so be sure to register today!

Happening this week!!! Free online workshop! Learn from the experts how to read in your major! Registration link in comments 🤩

It's almost February, and that means it's time to pick up your copy of our next great read!
We'll be reading a non-fiction book this time, Dopesick by Beth Macy. It's critically acclaimed, and it's so good they made it into a limited series on Hulu! (Maybe we can organize a watchparty if you're interested!) It's about the opioid epidemic, and it's framed around individual stories of impacted families. I know that some of you (like me) are addicted to fiction, but it's good to read other genres too, and this is a timely and important topic. I can already tell our conversation is going to be good! And remember, you don't need to finish the book to attend the discussion, especially with a non-fiction read like this one.

It's time for the November book club -- and we've chosen a book that's perfect for a month about family, 'The House of Broken Angels' by Luis Alberto Urrea.
Here's a brief summary + snippet:
In this "raucous, moving, and necessary" story by a Pulitzer Prize finalist (San Francisco Chronicle), the De La Cruzes, a family on the Mexican-American border, celebrate two of their most beloved relatives during a joyous and bittersweet weekend.
"All we do, mija, is love. Love is the answer. Nothing stops it. Not borders. Not death."
Sounds pretty good, eh? Register today so you can download your copy while supplies last! (Vlinks in comments.) See you soon!

It's almost October, and that means all things spooky. We found a book that is supposed to be wonderfully weird and funny and horror-ific: 'Bunny,' by Mona Awad. It's a Goodreads Choice Award nominee and has received critical acclaim: It was named a Best Book of 2019 by TIME, Vogue, Electric Literature, and The New York Public Library. I really can't wait to see what you think of it!
We'll be meeting on Wednesday, October 18th from 12:30 - 1:30pm at ESTUN Sage in Edinburg and BSTUN La Sala in Brownsville. As always, you can expect coffee, snacks, and great conversation!

I hope you are all well and have transitioned smoothly into this fall semester. To help you get your groove back, we've got a book club meeting coming up this month on the 26th!
We'll be discussing A Beautiful Work in Progress by Mirna Valerio. It's a great story of someone who is not what we might think of when we think of a traditional marathon runner (read: white and thin) and how she overcomes the challenges of her life as well as the mental and physical challenges of ultra distance running. It's been a great read so far, and I hope you'll pick up your copy today!
Remember, you can register for our club meeting by going to V-link: https://utrgv.campuslabs.com/engage/event/7174244 The first 25 registrants receive free digital copies of the book!
We'll be meeting on Zoom at 3pm on the 28th (register on V-link for the meeting link). We'll have a great conversation and hopefully bring some meaningful personal insights. And as if that wasn't enough, meeting attendees get a chance to win some cool UTRGV swag!
Can't wait to see you there 🙂
