Yesterday a great thing happened in RI. For the first time in two years, RIMEA hosted a live, in-person, large-ensemble festival, hosted by URI. Congratulations to the following schools and their directors, for taking on the challenge to put themselves out there to perform live jazz in front of expert adjudicators! Classical HS, Allan Raskin, Director; Barrington HS Jazz Combo and Jazz Ensemble, Barbara Hughes, Director; North Kingstown HS Jazz Ensemble, Toni Silveira, Director; West Warwick HS Jazz Ensemble, Matt Livesey, Director; Cumberland HS Jazz Ensemble, Mike Feroce, Director; South Kingstown HS Jazz Ensemble, Fritz Benz, Director; and Portsmouth HS Jazz Band, Ted Rausch, Director. All the groups played with class, energy, solid precision, and featured some superb soloing! A joy to listen to. Special thanks to the URI Music Department, and the Festival Chair Emmett Goods for taking on this daunting task.

We have now passed 2,500 signatures! Let's get it to 3,000 and more. Every Rhode Island student deserves a comprehensive, standards-based arts education, including a minimum of one required year of Arts study at the high school level in order to graduate. Sad to see another of Rhode Island’s premier musicians and music educators pass away recently. Lou Ricci was extremely active as a trombonist and RIMEA music teacher for many many years and was well known and respected when so many of today's veteran music educators entered the profession in the late 70s, 80s and 90s. Lou you will be missed but your musical legacy continues. Rest in peace knowing you made a positive difference for so many. Your legacy will live on. https://www.marianiandson.com/tributes/Louis-Ricci
