Saint Francis Xavier Band

ardo Oliveira, First Secretary Mr. Aldino Rodrigues, Second Secretary Mr. Aldolfo da Silva, First Treasurer Mr. António Vieira and Second Treasurer Mr. Francisco Amaral, held a general interest meeting on September 29, 1993 in which twenty musicians from the Portuguese community eagerly came forth to participate in the new band which was incorporated on October 13, 1993. Lira São Francisco Xavier held its first rehearsal in the Trinity Brotherhood Club located on Sutton Avenue in East Providence, RI under the direction of Mr. Manuel Xavier, the band’s first conductor. More than six hundred people came to see the band’s first public performance on April 17, 1994 in the Saint Francis Xavier Parish Hall. On May 22, 1994, the band participated in its first community job at Saint Anthony’s Church in Fall River, MA. The band continued to serve the community from the Trinity Brotherhood Club as their home base. Later, Lira São Francisco Xavier moved to Philip Street Hall Brotherhood Club located on North Philip Street in East Providence, RI where Mr. Alfredo da Rosa and Mr. Roberto Ribeiro directed the band for many years. As the years progressed, the marching band continued to grow with new committee members and musicians, and yet again needed to make a move from Philip Street Hall Brotherhood Club to Saint Francis Xavier Church on North Carpenter Street in East Providence where it currently resides today. Eduardo Matos and Mrs. Christine Da Silva-Lind directed the band during this move. The band, under the direction of Mr. Alfredo Pacheco, grew to approximately forty members, which is double the size of the original band membership. The committee members consisted of President Mr. Alberto Pacheco, Secretary Mr. Aldino Rodrigues, and Treasurer Mrs. Lucia Orleck. Over the years, Lira São Francisco Xavier has served many different locations including Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey and Canada. The band continues to expand its horizons with the formation of a free music school and youth group. In 2013, Lira São Francisco Xavier celebrated its twentieth anniversary with a dinner and concert to honor all members, past and present, in gratitude for their service to and success of the band. On November 22, 2013, Mr. Alfredo Pacheco was succeeded by Mr. Matthew de Matos as conductor of the band. With our new conductor Carlos Neto, who secceeded the former Matthew de Matos, Lira São Francisco Xavier continues to grow in its musicianship with the help of our new conductor as well as with the help of the committee members. Our president Mr. Daniel Diogenes, and their board of directors dedicate endless hours in hope of carrying on the vision that the six men had in 1993 of a band representing the Portuguese community of East Providence, RI and to guide our band in its participation in various cultural events both locally and internationally.

A História da Lira São Francisco Xavier

Lira São Francisco Xavier foi fundada por um grupo de imigrantes açorianos vivendo na cidade de East Providence, Rhode Island que desejavam continuar uma tradição cultural portuguesa nos Estados Unidos formando uma banda filarmónica para a comunidade. A primeira direção da banda, Presidente José Gouveia, Vice-presidente Leonardo Oliveira, Primeiro Secretário Aldino Rodrigues, Segundo Secretário Aldolfo da Silva, Primeiro Tesoureiro António Vieira e Segundo Tesoureiro Francisco Amaral, reuniram-se inicialmente em 29 de setembro de 1993 com vinte músicos da comunidade portuguesa que compareceram na reunião ferventemente para participar na banda nova que se incorporou no dia 13 de outubro de 1993. Lira São Francisco Xavier teve o seu primeiro ensaio no Trinity Brotherhood Club situado em Sutton Avenue em East Providence, RI dirigido por Sr. Maestro Manuel Xavier, o primeiro maestro da banda. Mais do que seiscentas pessoas vieram ver a band no seu primeiro concerto no dia 17 de abril de 1994 no Centro Paroquial de São Francisco Xavier. No 22 de maio de 1994, a banda participou no seu primeiro trabalho na comunidade na Igreja de Santo António em Fall River, MA. A banda continuou a servir a comunidade do Trinity Brotherhood Club como a sua sede. Logo, a Lira São Francisco Xavier mudou-se ao Philip Street Hall Brotherhood Club situado em North Philip Street em East Providence, RI onde Sr. Maestro Alfredo da Rosa e Sr. Maestro Roberto Ribeiro dirigiram por muitos anos. Ao longo dos anos, a filarmónica cresceu em número de músicos e membros da direção, e assim novamente mudou-se outra vez ao Centro Paroquial da Igreja de São Francisco Xavier em North Carpenter Street em East Providence onde se encontra actualmente. Maestro Eduardo Matos e Sra. Christine Da Silva-Lind dirigiram a banda durante esta mudança. Depois, dirigida por Sr. Maestro Alfredo Pacheco, a banda cresceu aos quarenta músicos que é o dobrar do conjunto dos membros originais. Presidente José Gouveia, Vice-presidente Alberto Pacheco, Secretário Aldino Rodrigues e Tesoureira Lúcia Orleck eram os membros da direção. Ultimamente, Lira São Francisco Xavier tem servido várias localizações incluindo Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey e o Canadá. A banda continue a expandir os seus horizontes com a formação de uma escola musical completamente gratis e um grupo de juventude. Em 2013, Lira São Francisco Xavier celebrou o seu vigésimo aniversário com uma ceia e um concerto em homenagem aos seus membros passados e actuais em gratidão pela sua dedicação à e êxito da banda. No dia 22 de novembro de 2013, Sr. Maestro Alfredo Pacheco foi sucedido por Sr. Matthew de Matos como maestro da banda. Actualmente o maestro da banda e o senhor Carlos Neto, a Lira São Francisco Xavier continua a crescer em número de músicos com a ajuda do nosso novo maestro em conjunto com os membros da direção. O nosso Presidente Daniel Diogenes, e a sua direção dedicam horas inúmeráveis na esperança de realizar o sonho que os seis homens tiveram em 1993 de uma banda representante da comunidade portuguesa em East Providence e guiar a banda na sua participação em vários eventos culturais locais e internacionais.
