In Michigan, you are not legally obligated to disclose that you are carrying a concealed weapon during a truly consensual conversation with law enforcement. The mandatory "duty to inform" only applies if you are stopped or detained by a peace officer.

The Distinction:

Consensual Conversations:
Since you are free to leave and not being legally detained, there is no statutory obligation in Michigan Compiled Laws (MCL) 28.425f to inform the officer.

Stopped or Detained:
If an officer pulls you over, detains you, or officially stops you while you are carrying concealed, you must immediately inform them that you are a Concealed Pistol License (CPL) holder and that you are carrying a concealed weapon.

How the Law Works When Stopped:

Immediate Disclosure:
You must state immediately that you have a CPL and that you are carrying.

State Law:
This obligation specifically applies to Michigan CPL holders; however, it is heavily recommended to present both your driver’s license and CPL together whenever you are interacting with the police during a traffic stop.

Penalties:
Failure to disclose during a legal stop results in a civil infraction with monetary fines and potential CPL suspension or revocation.
