BEAUTY FROM ASHES

On this day in 2015, 18-year-old Victoria Siegel was found unresponsive after an overdose. Her loss could have ended a story.

Instead, it began a movement.

Today, because of the relentless love and leadership of Jackie Siegel, Queen of Versailles and her family, June 6 is Congressionally recognized nationally as National Naloxone Awareness Day—a day dedicated to spreading awareness of the medication that saves lives from opioid overdoses.

What was once unimaginable grief has become hope for countless families.

JUICE

The Siegels got it. And they use it to save lives.

I had a fortunate front-row seat these past two days in Washington, D.C. at the National Naloxone Awareness Day events. The rooms were packed with heavy hitters: Senator Rick Scott, ONDCP Director Sara Carter, Congressman Byron Donalds, Mrs. America, and Angel Army leaders from across the country.

Influence is impressive. Using it to protect families is inspiring.

FentanylFathers.org co-founder Jack Swan traveled to Ohio today to pitch the Safety Summit.

This is what the work looks like behind the scenes. Long drives. Early mornings. Meetings that may never make the news. One conversation at a time. One school at a time.

But this kind of grind is exactly what leads to more school assemblies, more educated students, and ultimately more lives saved in the fall.

And while he’s representing Michigan on the road, Jack remains remarkably magnanimous toward our Ohio friends. That’s no small accomplishment for a Wolverine.

Proud of the effort. Proud of the mission.

Every school reached is another opportunity to spare a family from the heartbreak ours experienced.

ARKANSAS HAS A NEW NORTH STAR

With all due respect to President Bill Clinton, Arkansas has a new North Star: Jenny Neville.

On the anniversary of her son Clay’s passing, Jenny transformed unimaginable grief into action by launching Angel Army’s Fentanyl Fathers chapter in Arkansas.

Clay was just 26 years old.

Instead of allowing tragedy to have the final word, Jenny has chosen to honor her son’s life by helping save the lives of other families. Thanks to her leadership, students across Arkansas will soon hear the warnings, facts, and real-life stories they deserve before a deadly mistake becomes a family tragedy.

Change is happening in Arkansas with one courageous parent mobilizing her community to warn one school at a time.

The Angel Army continues to grow because parents like Jenny refuse to let their children’s legacy end at a gravesite. They turn loss into purpose and purpose into protection.

Arkansas, meet one of your newest heroes.

BAD AND BADDER

Bad to the bone. That is Michael DiTomasso.

Badder still was his brother Joseph.

Growing up on Staten Island, opposing Joe in hockey often meant getting slammed into the glass—whether you volunteered or not. Together, they were The Bash Brothers.

Then Joseph died from fentanyl poisoning.

Through that tragedy, I met Michael’s wonderful parents. They welcomed me into their Italian Staten Island home with open arms, tears, stories, hugs, and enough incredible food to feed an army.

Earlier this year Michael and I stood together at Joseph’s former school as part of our New York awareness tour. We shared Joseph’s story with students in the hope that no other family would have to endure the same heartbreak.

The students listened and the media noticed.

And now Michael’s story has landed on the front page.

Today, Michael serves as New York Director for AngelArmy.com and FentanylFathers.org, helping lead our effort to warn students across the Empire State about the dangers of fentanyl.

What moves me most is the promise Michael made to his brother.

A promise made beside a casket.

A promise that Joseph’s death would not be in vain.

If you have a few minutes, please read Michael’s remarkable story. I think you’ll be as moved as I was.

The Italians have a saying about getting even.

Driven by his love for Joseph, Michael is getting even with death itself—by saving hundreds of young lives from his family’s fate.

SIBLING REUNION

Yesterday was perhaps the most special day I’ve had in over a decade.

My siblings Dave, Kath & Jo came to town — the same crew who sat around our dinner table back when families still gathered every night, shared meals, and shared life.

Often over the last ten years, I’ve come alone to this spot in the Kenbrook woods where my mother would bring us as children to read books and enjoy picnic lunches. It became a place of remembrance for me.

My ritual was to stand in this very spot and quietly recite words my mother taught us:

“All by myself, I think of you.
I think of the things we used to do.
I think of the things we used to say.
I think of each happy yesterday.

Sometimes I sigh.
Sometimes I smile.
But I keep each olden golden while
All by myself.”

Yesterday, for the first time in a very long time, I wasn’t by myself.

We laughed until we cried. We told old stories. We remembered Mom and Dad. We hugged goodbye knowing something precious:

We had the best family and the best childhood any lottery winner could ever ask for.

And for one perfect afternoon, we were kids again.

From Chicago’s “Take Me Back”:
“I wish I could be a child.”

Yesterday, sitting on our old family log in those woods with my brother and sisters, I didn’t have to wish.

Shot a pro-law enforcement TV spot today — coming soon to a screen near you.

Here’s a suggested Summer To-Do List:

1. Read a classic by the beach.
2. Call that person you’ve been avoiding… and tell them you love them anyway.
3. Live with purpose. Consider joining the Angel Army: AngelArmy.com

FentanylFathers.org is grateful to stand as part of the Angel Army — where the stories of our children didn’t end… they multiplied into purpose.

🎸 Alice called it: “School’s Out For Summer.”

This marked our final school assembly of the year.

To every bereaved parent who has ever wondered if your child’s story could still save lives — the answer is YES.

If you feel called to speak, we will help you. Through joining AngelArmy.com, we will support you in:
• Booking schools in your county
• Learning how to present effectively
• Turning unimaginable loss into life-saving impact for students

What began as a few grieving parents has now reached hundreds of schools and hundreds of thousands of students.

And next school year?

We plan to triple in size.

Because one honest story can stop hundreds of deadly decisions.

“Don’t try. Don’t die.”
