Hard to believe I'm going on my 12th year as a coach. How cool to keep living my dream of watching people crush it. If it's been a while since we chatted, shoot me a message and say what's up. I know I suck at social media, but I'm going to work on it so I can connect with more of you. ✌️

Yesterday was a blast!! Thank you so much to everyone that came. It was so awesome to train and spend time with you all. Who else is feeling it today?! We are missing some since this was early before we were all a hot mess. We will definitely be doing another one soon!

Another great group of graduates at NPTI-CO! There's nothing I'm more passionate about than spreading knowledge on health and fitness.. being around hungry, excited new members of the fitness industry reminds me why I chose the path I did. I'm so grateful to learn from these awesome people, share what I know, and and see them go out and crush it.

Some of them are members of this page/community. To the four of you-feel free to jump in on any questions that come up on this page, share your ideas, or put questions you might have. I'm so proud of you guys and I know you have what it takes. You guys have the tools.. now it's all about execution. I'll pump out content for you guys as well..just ask!

To the rest of you-now you know there's many high quality trainers watching this page that you can learn and grow from as well. Put questions out there for all of us to grow from. Share in your successes and struggles. Let's build this community and help each other reach our goals in fitness and life!

Part of what makes this place so awesome is the people. Although we're all different and unique in our own ways, we've all got one thing in common... Becoming the best version of ourselves!

So if you know anyone who you feel would be a good addition to this community, here's your chance to invite them to hang out with us to see what we're all about. If you have never trained with me in person before, these are for you too!

Here's what the passes are good for:

- A free training session

- A meeting with yours truly to discuss goals and perform a movement screen

- An in depth look into our programs

-Individualized exercise program based on what I learn in the meeting/session.

*I've only got a few of these left since they are before we got our new logo, so if you or someone you know might be interested please me know ASAP in the comments below (or message/email). I'd be happy to drop one in the mail for you or give it to you at the gym! Thanks for the consideration!! 05/26/2017

A Handy Alternative to Counting Calories

Who is into calorie counting? Probably not most of you.. And there is research out there showing calorie estimates and calorie prediction equations are not as accurate as we might think. Check out this article with some practical and simple approaches to daily and individual meal needs. Let me know what you think!! As a fitness professional or nutrition coach, you know calories matter. Fundamentally, human body weight is controlled by energy balance-calories in vs. calories out. But having clients meticulously count calories and track macronutrients is not the solution in most cases. That approach is often ted...

**Follow up to Monday's video**

If you want some science behind short duration/high intensity training, watch Monday's video. In a nutshell, it gives the hormonal response that you need to build a muscular / athletic physique. Of course these aren't for everyone. If you want to compete in bodybuilding, you aren't doing these everyday. If you want your fitness to = readiness for whatever you want to do in life, these type of workouts are for you.

Below are a few examples of real workouts done with real people at Kimmich Training.

Two problems with not testing your fitness:

-You can't tell how your efforts are improving your overall fitness. We're all about seeing progress that our hard work creates. Try a challenge like the ones featured below, and then repeat it in a month. If you don't get better, what you are doing is not working. Time to change the approach and see what works for you.

-Without testing yourself, how are you confident that you know what you are capable of mentally? In the majority of tests I've ever witnessed, mental toughness has played a much bigger role than physical ability.

I LOVE challenges for showing all of us we are capable of A LOT more than we think.

Note: all the examples listed below are from people that have been training these movements and understand them well. Don't try a movement you don't know just for a 'challenge'. Find a modification that you can use for what I have presented based on what you know.

If you need help modifying, holler at me in the comments below! I'm fired up to help others get moving and reach their goals.

Special shout out to Master Cavins and the others that PM'd me for these workout examples. When I offer and you ask, I'll deliver. Let me know if you need help designing your challenge and please let me know how it goes! You'll repeat your challenge in 4 weeks and see getting results is about consistency / dedicated effort. It's not about getting fancy and quick fixes like the late night infomercials.

Another shout out to my great friend and Coach Stefan Webb for putting me through a challenge Sunday. Being around you pushes me to do more than I thought possible. #livethecode

If you need clarification on any of the movements / challenges, email me at [email protected] and I'd love to help you out! I'd love to hear your feedback so please comment below!

The message of the week this week is both training and mindset related:

At Kimmich training we often utilize the "Push until you can't, rest until you can" approach.

This means high volume workouts with moderate intensity. We've found these to be incredibly useful for building athletic, lean, muscular physiques. Here's two reasons why:
1. When you force your body into an anaerobic environment it releases lactic acid as a buffer which and releases anabolic hormones (the ones that build lean muscle).

2. Resistance training also signals testosterone and HGH which builds muscle (the opposite of what low intensity long duration cardio does) and creates metabolic after burn.

In life this phrase applies too. Give what you got until you need a rest and then get back after it. Take some power naps and push yourself-you'll be surprised what you are capable of.

Let me know if you'd like a sample of the benchmark workouts we are doing this week!

Kimmich Training lessons of the week:

I am so grateful for the people I get to influence. This week I saw a student of mine from 2012 when I was teaching in New York City (the infamous Cam Vu pictured below). Crazy I got to be his teacher in NYC 5 years ago and now I get to be his coach in Highlands Ranch. Experiences like that remind me how everything certainly isn't an accident.

We celebrated our first year of business at Strive! What used to be dreams are now a reality with the community and martial artists we've created in the last year!

I so appreciate the honesty of my team. This week I heard stories of stress eating, lack of motivation for training, concerns about chronic pain, and so much more. I am honored that my team can share their struggles with me so I can be a part of the problem and therefore the solution.

One of my longest mentors and friends, Master Robert Gallagher held his 18th consecutive Attitude For Gold Taekwondo Classic tournament. I wasn't able to help much but in a few hours I was so inspired by his passion even after decades of dedicated effort. I am amazed and inspired by him and all those that I look up to that have been "in the trenches" for so long and still loving it. What a good reminder that when we follow our passion we find energy we didn't know we had to do what it takes.

My Sister Carly graduated college and reminded me we all have the rest of our lives ahead of us. It is up to us to make what we want of this one ride we get. The time is always now.

Also this week coaches, friends, and team mates offered knowledge/advice/motivation to help me become better. I'm amazed how altruistic the people closest to me are. I couldn't be more grateful for what great people are willing to do for others while expecting nothing in return.

Every week I could write about gratitude and how grateful I am to have what I do. When I'm asked 'how are you' I think my new response is 'I'm always good' because I have so much to be grateful for. I have my family, health, I work hard every day on my passion, and I have great people surrounding me (near and far). Of course life can be tough and it's not all rainbows and butterflies but with the right perspective I believe we can be fired up/happy to attack life with everything we have!

Happy Sunday team! Let me know what I can do to help in any way!

My thoughts on two reasons discipline is better than motivation.

Highlights of the week:

Our slogan 'fitness for life' meant this week that I'd use fitness in life to dive off of my moving bike when a loose dog tried to attack Tucker (our sweet boy pictured below). Thank goodness for fitness and martial arts there!

#Community = strength.
We kicked off a new challenge this week with 20 new members, all of which surprised themselves with what they were capable of. It is so amazing to watch people discover that they CAN do what it takes to chase their dreams. What a great reminder that we all need a supportive team around us to find inner strength to do more than we thought was possible.

My amazing wife is an amazing group Instructor! Coach Emily debuted her group coaching skills yesterday and absolutely crushed it. There is nothing better than living my passion alongside my best friend. Get ready for more of Coach Emily!

Hail is strong! We got attacked this week with crazy hail storms that destroyed our car and many other people's houses and stuff.. It was tempting to get pissed / sad.. But when you have health, family, and community, do you really want to cry about stuff?

We do an amazing event at Strive where kids make a promise on a board that they make to their mothers. They then break the board as a promise to themselves to not break the promise. It touched me so much the insight and love that kids have towards their moms. I know I am who I am because of the amazing parents I have and I wish every mother out there a happy mothers day!

Create a vision that excites you like. Nothing else and visit it often. Do the work it takes to get there. The results will be worth it.

It's not a comeback.

This woman has overcome three joint replacements in the last year and doesn't make any excuses for not continuing to kick ass.

We all face challenges that set us back, but those challenges set us up to be stronger than we ever were before.

Kimmich Training

I’ve chased my dream of helping people reach their goals in fitness, sport, and life for over a decade now. I am happy to introduce a symbol that represents what I stand for: Kimmich Training’s new logo!
The mountains represent the challenge of reaching higher to places we’ve never been and the step-by-step journey to reaching our biggest goals. There are three mountains, all of different heights. They represent the award stand and how it feels to stand anywhere but the top. Some people think it’s crazy to be dissatisfied with third place, but third place means falling short and feeling mediocre. That feeling fuels some people to try again with more passion than ever and achieve more. We are going to fall short in life. That’s a good thing… it means we are shooting for greatness, not just something we think is “realistic”.
I’ve seen this too much and am guilty of it myself: we think small, set “realistic” goals, set goals we are sure we can reach. We are going to fall short, and if we do, why not fall short of a goal that excites and leads to massive action like nothing else! The path won’t be straight, and it won’t be easy, but let’s aim to climb the middle mountain where greatness we’ve never felt lies. Something that others think is so big it's crazy. Falling short of big goals will often mean achieving much more than what was “realistic”. At the same time, recognize if you can climb a small mountain, you’ve proven to yourself you are capable of more than you thought and you can climb a bigger one.
Our new slogan: ‘Fitness For Life’. We train so we can express our fitness in the things we want out of life. If your training seems like a tedious chore you have to get done, you need to rethink your path. You should look forward to what you do because you are intimately connected with why you are doing it.
The circle represents the timelessness of the journey to health. We don’t wake up one day and ‘arrive’ at the place we want to be. We strive daily to have habits that support giving ourselves the best chance at a long, healthy life so we can be our best for those we care about.
The three stars represent family, friends, and our community. As a team, we are capable of more than we ever thought possible. Because of those around me, my passion for coaching grows stronger everyday. I coach to help others achieve what they didn't think was possible, but what I’ve gotten back has enriched my life beyond words.
Thank you for all of your love, support, and hard work. Here’s to the next chapter!

Always grateful for the opportunity to influence the next generation of martial artists and character strong people!

Post-Workout Nutrition is Dead - Biotest

--Question: what nutrition strategy have you found most effective before / during / after workouts?--

We all know lifting or training anaerobically (whether it be lifting or intense cardio) on an empty stomach is a bad idea, but this article puts a different spin on things than what many of us practice.

A couple take aways:

1. Prioritize protein pre workout, not just carbs
2. Consider the hormonal response of the nutritional strategy you employ
3. Understand what glycogen is and what happens when it is depleted
4. Fuel differently if your workouts are more than an hour

Personally, I like to train at higher intensities for shorter periods of time typically (less than 60 minutes). I like high intensity circuits after working on techniques / positions I'd like to improve.

I've found a well balanced meal a couple hours before a workout, then fruit with a scoop of whey protein 15 minutes pre workout, followed by a protein shake post workout works best for me.

--What works best for you? When was the last time you tweaked your nutritional strategy surrounding workouts?-- The time you spend in the gym will be wasted If you don't get the proper pre-workout and intra-workout nutrition. Here's what you need to know.

People that stick to the program build a lean, strong physique they have never been able to achieve on their own. *first class is always free. please email [email protected] for registration information and the current class schedule *** We also offer One on One Personal Training: Through range of motion/strength testing we will identify the most important exercises for you to perform to correct imbalances. In an aim to make your body work better, we will choose corrective exercises based on your individual biomechanics. Personal Training is by appointment only. Email [email protected] for introductory special *** ----------What on earth is Muscle Activation Techniques? (MAT)----- Most of us will agree that we "compensate". But what does that mean? Compensation patterns occur over time as the body's way of protecting itself from injury. Simply said, compensation is the body finding a way to use (or overuse) strong muscles, and avoid using weak ones. The bad news about compensation is that with these dysfunctional patterns in place, when you train hard the weak get weaker and the strong get stronger and performance decreases. Only by discovering and treating imbalances can you be confident that you are performing your best. MAT is a revolutionary process that has been developed to identify and correct muscular imbalances. It utilizes range of motion exams and positional muscle testing to figure out what muscles of the body are not working well. Or to put another way, muscles that have poor neurological connections. The goal of MAT is to increase range of motion and improve muscle function of the body. To get started with a free biomechanical evaluation and learn more about MAT, email John at [email protected]
