Hannah McLean has only been a student for one term and has already earned a promotion at her job.

Hannah, a mom of three in Virginia, was working at Target when she heard about DU’s Organizational Leadership program with a concentration in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, which resonated with her.

It was scary for her to go back to school, but the college was welcoming from the start. In one of her first classes, instructor Brian Cicero taught her about leadership styles and opened her eyes to her own potential as a leader.

“For a long time, I thought I would only be in a support role; I never thought I’d be a lead,” she says. “Brian gave me the confidence to be me and go for it.”

At his urging, she applied to a team lead position and leveraged her ongoing studies in inclusive practices. Now she co-manages front-of-store operations and a large team of employees in Guest Services, and she’s bringing home substantially more money.

“I’m thriving in this position. I love it,” she says. “The confidence University College has given me is incredible.”
