I literally have been having the time of my life with my favorite little people this summer. They're a joy and I just love seeing their joy.
My son, Roman, recently turned 15 and is making projects and materials such as Little Rooms, toy mobiles and more for families and children requesting them. Let me know if you're interested as he has lots of time this Summer for some work that I pay him for. We'd be happy to create something for you. 😃😃
Sloane, or "Sloan-e" is just the kind of gal who will capture your heart in no time at all. She has tumors on her optic nerves behind her left and right eye and has to take chemo medicine among many other medications daily. She's so brave. Well, we teamed up earlier in the year and she is learning to work with low vision aides that give her better visual access and better learning to read and write. The use of magnification, a slant board, an adjustable portable light/lamp, tape for lines on her dry erase board and a few other things are what we can do to help her in her preschool program. Go Sloane.
I can't even tell you how awesome this activity turned out. Thanks again to the Butterfly Pavilion for partnering with us and making this a very successful multisensory experience. We learned so much about invertebrates.
Shout out to Abby and Emma!!!
They've been rocking their vision sessions with me lately. They're making choices with their vision and learning to understand symbolic representation visually. They're visually scanning their immediate spaces and visually finding things that are interesting. They're also exploring more with their hands; holding, gripping, and moving objects with purpose and intent. You go girls!!!
We had such a great event today at the Butterfly Pavilion. We learned how the hissing cockroach makes its noise to warn predators to stay away and we actually got to see and hear one. We learned how the starfish emits garlic smells to deter other creatures from eating it and we smelled one. We also learned how shell fish creates poky shells to protect itself from other sea animals and we felt it. Finally, we learned about how butterflies only live for about a month and they're very picky about which flower they would lay their eggs on. Daniel was just awesome in hosting this event and we're excited to repeat at the end of the month. Check out Daniel's Instagram, he's so full of exciting information about bugs.

I learned about Lilli Nielson's incredible work over 20 years ago and still utilize all of her ideas and strategies that are very applicable to the kids and families we work with. If you're interested in creating active learning spaces in your home with your child, please contact me and I'd be very excited to support your journey and creations.

We had such a great time at the Denver Musuem of Nature and Science last week. We got to see how color is communicative in so many ways. An octopus with blue spots that appear on their skin is saying, "I'm feeling threatened, please leave me a lone." Or, the hover flies that immitate the yellow and black strips like a bumble bee say, "Leave me alone, I might have a stinger to poke you with.", even though they dont. What a great way to express yourself; through the color you wear.
We love, love Eliott's enthusiasm for sensory play and exploration using all of his senses such as vision, hearing, touch, movement and more. Eliott is a twin born at 35 weeks and suffered a stroke post natal and subsequently had several brain bleeds on both the right side and left side of his brain which caused him to aquire cerebral visual impairment. He loves music and picking a song from the high contrast textured cards using his vision and touch. He will make eye contact, visually explore fun objects, search for things with his hands including track the texture patterns in books. He's utilizing all the ways to learn. Go Eliott!!!
Malia and Owen are learning their letters!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 With help from a reading specialist and our visual and tactile adaptations, these awesome kids are thriving and learning to read and sound out letters. Even if it's augmented with a communication device; even if they have visual and motor planning challenges; we can do anything!!!
All of the kids I see are making incredible progress. I'm convinced 110% that weekly undivided attention with meaningful and accessible activities through our different sensory activities and modalities by a teacher trained in visual impairments, reaches our children in ways unimaginable. Hunter, Elliott, Marshall, Aiden Owen, Kaitlin, Brett, Emma, Abby, Malia, Oliver, Malaki, and so many others are benefiting from my weekly services. We understand your challenges, your needs and your goals for your child.
Oh my, my, Marshall is stealing my heart with his enthusiasm and desire to learn new things. He had a stroke at birth, a massive seizure and hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy which impacted his vision. He has cerebral visual impairment and low vision among many other diagnosis such as autism. Well, he wanted to make sopapillas as part of his independent living skills goal, and boy he did a fantastic job. He learned about measuring utensils, amounts and special mixing instructions. Go Marshall. You rock!! 💚💙🩵💜

Rosie is so fun to play with and we are noticing increased use of vision skills such as looking at my face, looking at two different toys, and looking at something her hands are holding. She is so happy, alert and participates throughout my sessions. We are so proud of her hard work. Go Rosie!!!!
Wow, I love this new resource I found!!!

We just love how Oliver is learning to use his hands in such meaningful ways. Here in the first picture he is learning to use a magnifying glass to help himself see details in the song cards we use. He is also enjoying the feeling of squeezing the sensory bag which is strengthening his hands. In the last picture he is exploring how to use markers on the light pad. Our hands are tools for learning. Yay, go Olliver.
Wow, Malia is learning how to find things that are similar and different by using environmental adaptations and light in varying ways to help give access to her functional use of vision. We looked for fish, seaweed, whales and octopuses. She is doing just awesome developing visual discrimination skills while navigating having optic nerve hypoplasia AND cerebral visual impairment. Go Malia!!!
Owen is doing so well during our sessions. He is shifting gaze at near space and finding colors and bubbles dripping from the sensory toys. We are noticing a significant increase of different functional vision behaviors. He is also rocking his talking device and sharing so much about how he feels and what he thinks about himself. Go Owen. You are so brave and strong, little guy!
We are so proud of these kiddos who are learning how to use high contrast symbol cards in order to pick which activity they want to do. They are using their vision intentionally to explore and communicate. They are also increasing their use of distance vision and play skills of objects that provide engaging feedback through bright colors and cause and effect functions. Exploration is fun with all of our senses.
We are so proud of Noah and his progress. He is discovering and loving how to play with his hands. He has learned to grab small balls, look at finger puppets and hit/bat at objects. Go Noah!!
I just love working with these amazing kids and their parents. We do sessions together and these mamas jump right in and learn and participate alongside their child and are able to carry over to home and school environments. GO mamas!!
In the first picture, Nikki is helping her son Hunter match textures with a texture puzzle and he's performing it quite well. In the second picture, Christine is playing with pvc pipes with Liam who loves organizing and putting them together. In the third picture, Sammy's mom is holding a tray for her son Sammy so he can find the balls with his eyes and his hands. We're having a great time learning together.
Wow, Abby and Emma are learning to use their vision and they're looking all over for cool things to see, touch and explore. It's so fun it makes us smile. Go girls! You're amazing!!!

💚 HELLO MARCH!!
March is Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month!!
Yup, yup. But, we got you!!!💜🩵💙
I am excited to announce an addition to our vision specialty services, Elli Streifer, a DeafBlind Specialist Consultant and Sign Language Specialist Consultant. Elli will consult with children with sensory disabilities and their families about learning, retaining, and incorporating manual signs into their receptive and expressive communication. She will also assist in creating accessible and holistic manual communication systems that incorporate principles of touch-based learning and ProTactile philosophy. This is going to be an invaluable service for children that need a multi-modal communication system.
We are loving the sensory activities from this month's Story Box Experience for Valentines Day. We have a CVI adapted book with textures, shapes, real pictures, and real objects to explore with our vision, touch and hearing senses. Wahoot. Whoot.
We are seeing so much success through minor adjustments with each child who has a visual impairment and additional disabilities. Below one child benefits from an easal for close visual proximity, another child benefits from the use of light and a third child greatly benefits from a partial object symbol communication system. Through our assessments, co-treating and visual supports, WE understand how to serve each child individually. We are thrilled to meet each child's needs individually and support their access in a way that creates success and increased independence. We got you! WE got your child.
Go Liam!! We are so thrilled with the progress you are making. 👏🏼👏🏼Liam has cerebral visual impairment, autism, and a genetic disorder, though, his breakthrough communication abilities with real pictures on his device lately is absolutely wonderful. Our teaming efforts and co-treatments with Nicole, an occupational therapist, and Jenny, a speech language pathologist, including Liam's mother has made all of this possible. He is rocking it with increased functional play and communication skills these days. 👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼👍🏼
