Good News for the Florida Panther 03/16/2024

The good cat news keeps on coming! Now it's the Florida Panther, aka mountain lion. In this exciting development about the future of the only mountain lion population in the East, note that our Texas mountain lion played an early role in increasing panther numbers.

Bobcats Take Center Stage in Tucson Study 02/10/2024

Some interesting notes about Tucson's urban bobcat study and the incredible number of specific sightings of these cats.

One of the study participants says that some research shows bobcats avoid urban areas. That may be, but the Dallas-area bobcats don't seem to have received that message as they are seen just about everywhere, except maybe downtown Dallas.

From puma expert and friend of Texas pumas (mountain lions), Mark Elbroch comments on changing attitudes toward our apex cat.

Texans' attitudes are changing, too. Check out the attitudes survey conducted by Texas A & M University that's posted on our website, https://www.texasnativecats.org/

In the face of the biodiversity crisis, attitudes about how wildlife is managed continue to change. New research from the Cougar Research Collaborative highlights that people in the United States want their state wildlife agencies to prioritize conservation actions, including the restoration of wildlife and degraded habitats, over increasing hunting and fishing opportunities.

These results offer critical insight into the attitudes of hunters and Americans in general, who prioritize species restoration. This is an important message for decision-makers and wildlife managers to consider. Restoration, such as restoring pumas (also called mountain lions and cougars) and elk to the eastern United States, also offers a path forward that unifies hunters and nonhunters, and will likely increase a state agency’s ability to engage with a more diverse group of constituents in addressing wildlife conservation. This is exciting news for many species, including pumas. Everyday Americans, including hunters, want state agencies to tackle the broad and pressing conservation challenges of biodiversity loss.

Evidence by research group shows US-Mexico border wall has impacts on wildlife 01/22/2024

Likely this information isn't a surprise, especially to those of us who have a border wall in our states. Read - or listen - to the potential solution to allow wildlife passage through these impediments.

Evidence by research group shows US-Mexico border wall has impacts on wildlife Miles of border wall stretch into the divide the United States from Mexico. But now, there is growing evidence that newly constructed sections are also dividing a critical habitat.

Are Texans ready to live in bear country? 12/18/2023

No, not a cat story but it is about the expansion of the Texas black bear. This animal has been classified as threatened in the state but confirmed sightings reveal that it is on the move.

Local Mountain Lion Habitats in Southern California Threatened by City and Highway Lights | California Insights | NewsBreak Original 11/07/2023

Rarely are there confirmed sightings of mountain lions in our large Texas cities, unlike Los Angeles, but we hope our Texas government agencies building much-needed wildlife highway underpasses take note of the effects of light and noise on these cats around such structures.

On the flip side, studies have also shown that artificial light is an effective deterrent to keep mountain lions away from livestock.

Reasonable to ask that the use of light be minimized around crossings but increased around livestock.

Local Mountain Lion Habitats in Southern California Threatened by City and Highway Lights | California Insights | NewsBreak Original A study from the University of California, Davis, suggests that city and highway lights may be affecting the habitats of mountain lions in Southern California. The study indicates that these animals often avoid areas with artificial light, reducing their available roaming space. This issue contribut...

This article spotlights the illegal trade in ocelot skins as well as other illegal wildlife items. Thankfully, we now have a new program in Texas to breed this beautiful spotted cat for eventual release into South Texas where it stands a reasonable chance of surviving.

Rare ocelot caught on trail camera in Southern Arizona 07/29/2023

This ocelot came most likely from the Mexican state of Sonora, where there is a population of these cats. The same state is also home to the northern jaguar, a species occasionally glimpsed in Arizona as well. Only males of both species are seen in southern Arizona.

Texas has about 80 ocelots in far south Texas and has the only breeding population of these felines in the United States.

Rare ocelot caught on trail camera in Southern Arizona Arizona's only known ocelot has been seen in the Huachucas since 2012. Vail resident Jason Miller captured this footage with a motion-activated trail camera on July 4.
