Enjoy...with caution duly noted...

To spearhead your plan, you need to set a goal....
"If you would hit the mark, you must aim a little above it". ~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
There is nothing wrong with not meeting all of our goals, as long as our goals make us stretch. "If we want to run a marathon in under three hours, we'll train differently than if we want to run it in four hours. Maybe we won't finish in three hours, but we'll likely do better than if we were striving for four (Linda Picone)
It is good practice to set realistic goals that challenge us but are not impossible to attain, even if we do not reach them entirely. Remember - the minute that you think that you can go no farther, and can get no closer to that finish line, push yourself to take one more step...that is how you get closer...and closer to your goal each and every time that you try.

The first step towards accomplishing anything is to have a plan that you can follow. Once you get started, you may find that at times, you are able to take two steps at a time, while at other times you may need to slow your pace or even backtrack a bit and change direction slightly. But the key to getting where you want to go in life – whether it is to learn a new skill, get better grades, look or feel better, or whatever that desire to improve may be, is to get moving, and keep moving. After all, actions really do speak louder than words. Taking that next step to act on your plan will get you that much closer to turning that goal into a reality.

Last weekend I attended a great regional Dyslexia conference to hear two internationally recognized scientist/researchers in this field present on some of the latest findings. According to Sally and Bennett Shaywitz, 1 out of every 5 children are dyslexic...and this condition doesn't just magically disappear upon reaching adulthood. Well, in my opinion, if 20 % of all kids learning to read are struggling with this process, something needs to change in how we go about identifying and intervening so that we can catch them before they fall - before the pattern of persistent failure sets in.

Thinking about the concept of MINDFULNESS - such a hot buzz word these days. There are courses that you can take to learn about how to be mindful, therapies you can get that incorporate mindfulness techniques to cure what ails you, and a zillion articles, books, and other media forms that will bring you up to s***f on what this is all about. In reality, what we are urged to do is to have a more acute awareness of 'mind over matter' - observing our thoughts and feelings objectively, without judgment, and training our thoughts to have an attentive awareness of what IS real - living in the reality of the present moment. With intentional focus on the 'Now' as part of a daily practice we can develop a calm awareness of our body and our feelings to aid us in becoming more centered in both our physical and emotional world. Regular mindfulness practice can lead to less impulsiveness and more 'thought before action', ultimately resulting in greater wisdom. Mindfulness practice has become another tool for therapists in the treatment of conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD), anxiety, and many more.
Can you imagine how our world would look if it was overflowing with mindfulness practicing human beings?

I want to pass along a thought-provoking quote that my yoga instructor Shari shared with us this week:
"It is always in season for old men to learn."
- Aeschylus
"Every day is an opportunity to learn something new. Reading a
newspaper. Listening to the radio. Talking with friends. Taking a class. Or just watching what's going on around us.
We regularly encounter things that we can learn from ---if we would just open our eyes to them. What if we were to really pay attention to the world around us? What if we were to ask more questions? What if we were to seek out answers to these questions? Even if the answers only confirmed what we already knew, the search would help keep us sharper and more engaged."
(Linda Picone)
So for those of you who may still subscribe to the 'you can't teach an old dog new tricks' philosophy, it may be time to re-think that and work on becoming a permanent student of life.

Why didn't I write this?! I've only been 'explaining' this concept to many, many different people over many, many years. But sometimes I think my words may fall on deaf ears so now all I have to do is print this article and pass it out the next time someone asks me if I am a 'tutor'!

Some pause for thought here....is it more important that, as parents, we ensure our children have every opportunity to participate in all the the sports, performing arts, clubs, etc that are out there enticing our checkbooks or is it better to limit some of those experiences in favor of more QUALITY TIME around the family meal table?

Brain Food....whether you want to delay cognitive aging or for those still on the uphill climb who want to enhance memory capability, research shows that consuming 1/2 cup of strawberries or blueberries every week will make a difference. The key ingredient here... flavenoids....antioxidants that are also found in tea, apples, oranges and even red wine! Adding one of these fruit toppings to your breakfast oatmeal...priceless! Food for thought....
