Had a wonderful time leading the drum circle at All That Matters yoga + wellness winter gather and mingle event. The folks who run All That Matters know how to make people feel welcome and appreciated. I am grateful to be part of the extended family there.
Keep an eye for potential drum related workshops in the late winter early spring.

I made this black walnut ashiko cajon for Carlos Adames many years ago. Glad to hear him make it sound so sweet.

Played a little accompaniment for a kirtan after yoga class yesterday, a first for me. It was at a fundraiser for All That Matters yoga + wellness being held at Shepherd’s Run Winery. Such a beautiful event at a lovely location. Sam snapped a photo of a couple DMD - Dana Maguire Drums ashiko cajons. The other photo is of part of the winery and Zen Den. He said put his finger in front of the lens for a second before taking the photo. Happy accidents. I love the effect.

Did our command performance at Wyatt detention center today. We also got the warden and many other employees there playing. At that point when everyone was playing and smiling, we were all just human beings enjoying each other’s company. The folks working there were impressed by the guys’ skills and togetherness.

After the show and drum circle The warden asked the guys what they got out of the experience.

Paraphrasing some responses:

A chance to free their minds, in a positive way, from their every day reality

Gratitude, never thought they would be offered an opportunity to do anything like this while in there

A sense of community

A connection to humanity

A meditation

Fun

Feeling of accomplishment

Brought back good memories of playing in the jazz band in school

It is hard to express in words the joy I feel

These were more eloquently spoken by the guys but I hope you get the idea. As for me, I am full of joy to be a vehicle and have the drum as a vehicle to touch and connect hearts.

Our Therapeutic Drumming Collaborative did a performance today at Wyatt detention center. The guys did a great job. We are going to do another one next week so the warden and others can attend. We did a piece I taught them and two pieces from rhythms which they came up with. One was a Middle Eastern rhythm and the other a Hip Hop groove. Next week we will add an each one teach one where the guys will mentor others in creating a rhythm on the spot.

Warden says it looks good to continue with the program!!!

Fun at Nico Bella’s for PVD Fest. Drum circle starts at noon.

06/03/2022

I have drumming events coming up if people are interested in coming out. ALL of these events are FREE and open to the public.

Saturday June 11 from 12-1pm I will be leading a drum circle sponsored by and in front of Nico Bella’s restaurant during PVD Fest. I will be bringing lots of drums and percussion instruments. Bring your own too.

The flyer here is for the workshop on Sunday June 12. This should be really cool. The focus will be in creating a drum and percussion piece which creates an atmosphere. We will be perform it with the Notable Works ensemble. If you don’t feel like drumming you can take a poetry writing workshop with published poets. It all starts with a tour of the Audubon sanctuary in Bristol, which is a beautiful place. It is for people over 18 and registration is limited and required.

Thursday June 23 I will be leading a few drumming sessions at the rededication of All That Matters on Main St in Wakefield. We will get started around 6pm. I will have more specific details soon. This will be taking place during the Solstice Riverfire in Wakefield. All in all this will be a wonderful evening.

RIP Tutu. Such a wise, determined and kind man.

Until we can forgive the person who harmed us, that person will hold the keys to our happiness; that person will be our jailor. When we forgive, we take back control of our own fate and our feelings. ... We forgive for ourselves. Nobel Laureate, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu

I had the honor and joy of playing for Bishop Tutu back in 1999 when he came to Providence to do a special service. At that Tutu was receiving treatment for cancer. His service was touching and meaningful regardless of what one’s religious beliefs may be. By the end of the service he was dancing in the aisles leading a group of children singing and playing percussion while we drummed. After the service he greeted and hugged every single person who wanted to meet him. There were around 900 people in attendance.
The moment felt big to me as we began playing, almost too big. A moment later a feeling of joy filled me, a feeling of deservedness and being exactly in the right place at the right time.
The gratitude and care in the look and hug that he gave me are with me still.
