Newton County is opening Wolverine Gym at R.L. Cousins School for use as an emergency warming shelter beginning today, Wednesday, Dec. 21, at 5 p.m.
The temporary shelter, located at 8134 Geiger Street Covington, Ga, will be open from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. as cold temperatures persist. The Rainbow Center/Garden of Gethsemane, the host agency for the shelter, is providing transportation from the warming shelter to the Rainbow Shelter from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Newton County Board of Commissioners and the City of Covington are partnering to open the Cousins School Warming Shelter as temperatures are expected to be 20-35 degrees below normal by Friday, Dec. 23, with wind chill values as low as 4 degrees Thursday evening/Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
Even though Christmas is less than a week away, Santa and his reindeer are making one more stop in Covington this Thursday, December 22, 2022 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Bring your camera or phone to take pictures with Santa or the reindeer or both! Since the reindeer have a big job to do this weekend, you may not pet or feed them, but they are still a treat to behold. And Santa is always a joy to be around!
