Is your Flight Instructor also your Mentor?
When the result of your flight training experience is to be a safe, knowledgeable, and proficient pilot the answer is that he/she should be both.
At Lone Star Flight Training our students want a flight training experience that adds a specialized skill set, fulfills a lifetime dream, or the ability to save business travel time by use of their own plane. With our experience of twenty years of flight training and more flight hours than two commuter jet pilots we offer flight training that is personalized, friendly, and at your pace.
An Instructor will train you "how" to fly in much the same way they were instructed during their 25 hours of training required to achieve their CFI rating after 150 to 200 hours of flight time. Most CFIs do not use flight instructing as a source of income. Rather, it a means by which to build flight hours to achieve their career to be a pilot with an airline or extra income when laid off during hard times such as we are currently experiencing. You have to ask yourself, are they working for you or themselves. In most cases, this instructor will leave flight instructing and you when their flying job becomes available.
An instructor/mentor will not only teach you the "how" but also teach you the "why". Their goal is to share with the student pilots their insights based on their experience and to bring you to their level of understanding. Their goal or passion is to teach, train and offer valuable insight to their students while sharing their experience in a training format.
Many flight schools and CFIs will utilize an on-line course for ground training in order to pass the Airman Knowledge Test rather than provide a ground school with personalized instruction. You will most likely pass the required test but will you understand the “why” of controlled approaches or angle of attack and why these fundamentals are vital each time you fly. The “how” will get eventually get sloppy without understanding the “why”.
Mentoring is about sharing experience. Mentoring is a personal relationship. Mentoring is bringing the student pilot to the level of a peer.
Choosing the right instructor is fundamental to your flight training. The value of experience cannot be measured. The ability to develop a pilot who understands the “why” as well as the “how” creates a lifetime of understanding that will fulfill your goals and provide a solid foundation for your flying career.
