Last night, Mae Greentree and I went to a performance at Columbus School for Girls. After the show was over, as we were getting up to leave, Mae noticed that there was a plaque on the arm rest between us that read IN MEMORY OF JOHN S. KUHN.

The mics/sound are atrocious. There is so much feedback....mmI just don't understand why. You have season upon season to remedy this issue, yet here we are. Stayed until intermission out of respect for the hard work others have put in to the play.

Actors’ Theatre presents plays by William Shakespeare and other time-honored authors with relevance to a contemporary audience.

Actors' Theatre of Columbus is celebrating over 35 years of classic theatre in Columbus, Ohio, including an outdoor summer season in Schiller Park in German Village and in the Columbus Commons. It all began with a dog. In 1982, a small dog led the way to Free Shakespeare in the Park in Columbus. Co-founders Patricia and Gary Ellson lived on Reinhard Avenue near the northern edge of Schiller Park in German Village. Frequently they took their dog, Rasselas, for a walk in the park, where a small and largely unused concrete band shell stood. A passion for Shakespeare's works and the desire to make good theatre available to everyone who might enjoy it spurred Pat to approach the Recreation and Parks Department and ask if she could produce Shakespeare on that stage. Neither party realized a summer tradition was in the making. The Ellsons recruited friends and Pat held open auditions for the first season featuring A Midsummer Night's Dream. Because the Recreation Center was closed during the evenings, the acting company stored their minimal set in the Ellsons' living room and put on their simple costumes and makeup in the dining room. Every evening, the actors walked to the park carrying props and set pieces, and every evening after the show they walked back. They hoped at least 2,400 people would come to see the free production and printed programs accordingly. As it turned out, well over twice that number came that first summer, necessitating the need for an emergency grant from the Greater Columbus Arts Council in order to print the additional needed programs. By December of 1982, the Actors' Summer Theatre Company, as it was known then, had incorporated as a non-for-profit corporation. Through the years the company has grown from an amateur group composed entirely of volunteers, to today's professional company and has given the community the equivalent of over $5,364,300 in box office income, to more than 357,000 patrons, in the form of pay-what-you-will admission. Other sources of funding include private foundations, public agencies, and corporations who contribute to the quality of life in Columbus through their generosity.

*Facilities* There is no seating for the productions. Lawn chairs are allowed behind the traversing walkway, while blanket seating is de rigueur in front of the stage. Restrooms are available in the Schiller Park Recreation Center (hours are from 7:30pm until 9:45pm). Refreshments are available at the concession stand, though you are encouraged to bring a picnic and enjoy the performance al fresco. *Weather* The summer performances are under the stars (dress accordingly), and occasionally, under adverse weather conditions. The decision to cancel a performance is not made until 7:30pm. Performances may be canceled at any time during the show due to heavy rain, lightning or other reasons beyond our control. In case of adverse weather conditions during the performance, a 'hold' may be put in place until the conditions improve. A hold usually indicates that we believe the problem will resolve within a short period of time. If a performance is canceled before 8:00pm, a message will appear on our home page and our Twitter page. Please *manually* refresh the main web page if you are checking on cancellation status. *Etiquette* Although we encourage families to come and enjoy the show, we do ask that parents keep their children from running free and unsupervised. Remember, the actors can see you as easily as you see can them, and such distractions do a grave disservice both to them and other audience members. Along those lines, we also ask that you refrain from the taking of pictures and the use of recording equipment during the performance. Please make sure that cellular phones and beepers are off. Also if you do arrive late, or have to leave early, please be considerate of your fellow audience members, and do so as quietly as possible. *Pets* We always welcome well-behaved pets. Please keep in mind that there may be loud noises such as gunfire or shouting during the performance.

Mission: Actors’ Theatre of Columbus celebrates the possibilities of classic theater and literature, leading our diverse community in artistic excellence, education, and vision.

2020 Season

To our Patrons, our Staff, our Actors, and Fans:

First, I want to thank you for your 38 years of support for Actors’ Theatre of Columbus, and the joyous community that you have created and will continue to create with us in Schiller Park. It is your ongoing support of Actors’ Theatre that sustains us.

There is a great deal of uncertainty facing all of us in the coming months because of the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis, and the necessary steps Governor DeWine and Dr. Acton have taken on behalf of all Ohioans. Because of this, and Actors’ Theatre’s commitment to holding the highest standards of responsibility, we have made a necessary difficult decision.

In conjunction with me, our Board has unanimously agreed to make the proactive step of altering our summer performance schedule to allow time for the current crisis to normalize. Instead of beginning our season on May 21, we will instead begin on June 18, 2020. We will still present our entire #ROYALS season and, as we normally do, we will celebrate the end of our season Labor Day weekend. In order to make this change, each of our shows will perform for only three weekends instead of four.

While it is painful to shorten our season, we believe the decision is the right step to take at this time. All of us are focused on the health and well-being of our families, friends, and co-laborers right now, and Actors’ Theatre prioritizes the safety of our actors, staff, and audience. We hope that you will join us this summer.

View our new schedule at http://theactorstheatre.org/2020-season/.

Many thanks to the Greater Columbus Arts Council for their leadership and guidance in this new and uncertain time. We are grateful as well to the Ohio Arts Council, the Reinberger Foundation, and The Columbus Foundation for their continued support.

We will update our website with information on new events and online gatherings. You can also donate or become an ATC Member through the website at http://theactorstheatre.org/support/.

We will be rescheduling our Opening Gala to coincide with the updated schedule. Keep an eye on your inbox for that information very soon.

Take care of one another. Support local artists as we all learn to shift our focus temporarily to online events. Wash your hands.

With many thanks,
Philip J. Hickman, Artistic Director

[03/13/20]   From Artistic Director Philip J. Hickman, Actors’ Theatre Auditions and COVID-19 (3/12/2020)

Actors’ Theatre of Columbus is committed to maintaining the safety and well-being of our artists and patrons. We are continuing to monitor the guidelines given by the Ohio Department of Health regarding COVID-19 and are following their recommendations as we enter our Audition Weekend.

We have researched best practices and are making the following changes to our audition process:

- We have eliminated the use of passed papers during the audition process to reduce the possibility of surface transfer.
-We will be regularly disinfecting all surfaces that people might come in contact with.
-We are asking that all staff and actors auditioning practice social distancing, maintaining a personal distance of 4-6 feet from other people.
-We are asking that all staff and actors auditioning take the time to thoroughly wash their hands at regular intervals during the day.

If you are feeling unwell, have a cough or other symptoms of illness, please stay home and get well. If you would like to send a video audition, you can send it to [email protected].

Actors’ Theatre of Columbus is monitoring the guidelines for health and well-being. We will take all reasonable precautions to ensure that everyone has a great audition process in the safest possible environment.

We will update our website and social media pages with any changes as conditions evolve.
