DC Doulas and Newborn Care

My name is Rachel Wright and I'm the assistant for Amy Wright Glenn, founder of the Institute for the Study of Birth, Breath, and Death. Tomorrow, Amy is leading an online, sliding scale fee,15-hour, live training entitled "Holding Space for Pregnancy Loss." I'm writing to warmly welcome you to join us. What are the best care practices one can employ to skillfully, compassionately, and wisely hold space for bereaved parents? In your work with expectant mothers, how prepared do you feel to hold space for unexpected and heartbreaking outcomes? If you find yourself reflecting on the above questions, take advantage of this professional development opportunity to study with one of the key leaders in the field of birth and death work today. Amy's training is specifically structured to support you in holding space for families after the devastating experience of miscarriage, stillbirth, and/or infant loss. Her training based on a sliding scale payment philosophy and the live sessions occur each Monday in July 2017. All sessions are recorded and shared with participants. One need not participate live to complete the training. Doula Trainings Canada and Birth Arts International both offer 5 CEUs upon the successful completion of this training. DONA certified doulas have used this training to receive 5 CEU recertification hours under the Alternative B-1 category. Learn more about registration/payment and be sure to pass this information along to birth workers, hospice/hospital chaplains, nurses, midwives, OBs, therapists, and spiritual/religious pastoral care providers in your area. Thank you. Rachel "Amy’s training is fantastic, and any of our conference attendees said it was their favorite part of their experience! She approaches these difficult and emotional topics with amazing grace and confidence. Amy’s teaching style is so engaging, and she steadfastly guided us on such a beautiful journey over the short course of time we had with her (and we all wished we had more!). I am certain that her teachings are already rippling out into communities across the US and Canada now as a result of her offerings she brought to the 2017 Indie Birth Midwifery Conference. Thank you Amy, and thank you to the birth keepers who are learning from her and practicing this important work." ~Margo Blackstone, Indie Birth Association I would recommend Amy’s classes to anyone wishing to take an authentic and comprehensive exploration with a true cultural pioneer. This has been one of the best classes I have taken. ~ Sally Hunt, midwife, Australia This training has been one of the best investments I’ve made – in both my paid work and my personal growth. I feel empowered and ready to work with families facing pregnancy and infant loss and also many other unexpected outcomes. I will be recommending this course widely to anyone who works with birthing families. ~ Anna Baker, postpartum doula, Canada I cannot say enough for Amy Wright Glenn and all that she has put into her classes. I feel that she is a wonderful teacher with so much to offer to woman and men who are on a journey with pregnancy loss and the people who love them. ~ Kathleen Rouleau, hospice volunteer, Massachusetts This course was profoundly moving. I feel not only more prepared to help my community deal with the unthinkable, but also very inspired to research other cultures and practices. So grateful to Amy for her unwavering compassion and diligence to supporting the living as we walk through the process of death and dying. ~ Lisa Flato, birth doula, California Holding Amy Wright Glenn www.birthbreathanddeath.com @amywrightglenn https://www.facebook.com/AmyWrightGlenn https://www.facebook.com/birthbreathanddeath

Trigger warning: loss. Excellent piece.

"No woman who has carried a child for nine months should ever have to doubt her motherhood, but it immediately happens when that pregnancy falls into silence and the name of the child is never uttered. Simply asking a question about pregnancy or sharing a thought you had about the child can be enough to show that you see her as a mother and connect with her as a woman."
