Social justice-related projects are an important part of the HMC Clinic Program. Colleen Coxe, senior director of corporate relations, says, “We look for projects that would have a tangible impact on a community by providing it with technical resources that might not otherwise be accessible.”

One of the 2018-2019 projects involved building a system to help Fresno Metro Black Chamber of Commerce assess the efficiency of its pollution-control initiatives. Clinic team co-advisor Tanja Srebotnjak, Hixon Associate Professor of Sustainable Environmental Design and director of the Hixon Center for Sustainable Environmental Design, says the Fresno air quality monitoring project was an excellent opportunity for the students to see how science and technology can shed light on a social problem, while simultaneously demonstrating the need for coordinated efforts involving scientists, policymakers, urban planners and the impacted community.

Opinion: Is Anything More Urgent Than The Temperature Of Our Planet?

This summer's heat waves and other events globally have billions of people experience what climate change feels like. https://www.npr.org/2019/07/27/745765634/opinion-is-anything-more-urgent-than-the-temperature-of-our-planet. Good people everywhere are fighting it—from ambitious plans in India to build a grid on renewables to new corporate commitments to sustainability (e.g., Inditex's Zara)—but we need global action now.

Opinion: Is Anything More Urgent Than The Temperature Of Our Planet? Our Earth is in the middle of what may be the hottest summer on record. Scorching new records were set all over Europe this week. What could be more urgent news than the temperature of our planet?

A new study by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the Renewable Power Generation Costs report, shows that the cost of renewables continues to decrease -- to the point where nearly all types of renewables are cheaper than oil, coal, and gas-fired power plants. Here are some global average prices we should all know and use in our arguments: hydro costs $0.05/kWh, onshore wind and solar PV are below $0.10/kWh, and offshore wind is $0.12/kWh. New fossil fuel power plants in comparison cost $0.05-$0.15/kWh. Even concentrated solar power (CSP), the most expensive type of renewables, clocks in at $0.18/kWh. And these prices do not even take into account the monetized value of health benefits from cleaner air, water, and the chance of a stabilized climate. There were times when it was difficult to be a fan of renewables and an economist -- not anymore!

Sweeping New Report on Global Environmental Impact of Plastics Reveals Severe Damage to Climate | Center for International Environmental Law

We know that plastics are detrimental for ocean and human health and that they keep us tethered to climate-damaging fossil fuels. Now, the Center For International Environmental Law (CIEL) and partners have conducted an in-depth study of the life-cycle impacts of plastics—and the results call for a fast phase-out, especially in light of plastics' rapidly growing climate change impacts.

Today is Projects Day at Harvey Mudd College! A day for celebrating our students' and external partners' work on their respective Clinic projects. Clinic is a tradition at Mudd that combines curriculum with real-world project design and ex*****on. I've had the chance to be a faculty liaison on a couple of projects and am impressed by their level of technological and scientific depth and how they support students' growth in leadership, project management skills and general collaborative problem-solving skills. Congratulations!

About the Hixon Center

The Hixon Center for Sustainable Environmental Design at Harvey Mudd College was created in 2015 to initiate, support and coordinate college-wide programs and activities related to sustainability research, teaching and practice.

The Hixon Center promotes deep intellectual curiosity and scientific rigor in studying the complex interactions between human life and the natural environment. It raises awareness about humanity’s increasing footprint on critical ecosystem services and serves as a hub for students, faculty, staff and alumni to engage in collaborative discourse and actions to solve environmental problems on campus and beyond. With active participation across the entire community at Harvey Mudd and extending to the other Claremont Colleges and the world, the Hixon Center works to invigorate innovative thinking, scalable local action and global engagement, and to instill a high level of ethical and professional awareness in Harvey Mudd’s graduates concerning some of the most critical environmental challenges of our time.
