In 2017 The Claremont Colleges Library, A.K. Smiley Public Library, California State University Northridge Oviatt Library, California State University San Bernardino Water Resources Institute, the National Archives and Records Administration at Riverside, Ontario City Library, and Upland Public Library began collaborating on a 3-year digital project. Over the course of 3 years, the project Digitizing Southern California Water Resources, funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and administered through the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR), will target more than 30 archival collections to be digitized, uploaded to an online digital asset management system, cataloged with descriptive metadata, and placed under a curation plan.
The Claremont Colleges Library will have students, known as CLIR CCEPS fellows, digitize and create metadata for its own collections, as well as those of the Smiley, Ontario, and Upland libraries, and NARA. CCEPS stands for the Claremont Center for Engagement with Primary Sources. CCEPS provides professional archival training to undergraduate and graduate students while also promoting special collections and services as integral to the research, teaching, and learning mission of The Claremont Colleges Library. Cal State Northridge and Cal State San Bernardino will have their own students digitize their water collections.
The digitized collections will be accessible to all with Internet access, provide a foundation for a "distributed" digital water resource archive, and facilitate and support digital scholarship for regional, national, and international researchers.
