Summer Dissertation Bootcamp registration is open!

Are you working on your dissertation or dissertation proposal? Are you looking for an opportunity to dedicate some serious writing time to your project? If your answer to both questions is yes, then the Center for Writing & Rhetoric’s Summer Dissertation Bootcamp is for you!

The Summer Dissertation Bootcamp is a 5-day writing event that lasts from 8:15 am to 4 pm each day. During this time, you will work with peers at a similar stage as you in structured writing blocks. Through communal lunch conversations, guest visits, and workshop sessions, you will dedicate 25 hours of work time to your project while also learning strategies for the writing process. Students who have attended this event in the past have had great success in gaining momentum to complete their dissertations.

To register, you must submit an application with a detailed writing plan. You must also have your chair email us ([email protected]) with approval of your writing plan for the 5 days. Again, beginning this year, our summer boot camp is open to folks at both the dissertation and dissertation proposal stages.

Here’s a shout out to the CWR’s Spotlight Consultant of July 2019!

Anne Cormia, originally from San Francisco, joined the CWR team in Spring of 2019. Anne is a CGU student currently pursuing a PhD in Applied Cognitive Psychology, having previously earned her Master’s in Forensic Psychology from the University of York. Anne wanted to become a consultant because she missed teaching and had a strong desire for job that would allow her to help others while continuing to improve her own academic writing skills. Anne enjoys helping students with paper structure, noting that telling a coherent story is crucial to writing and research. She further notes that writing is a skill that is cultivated over a lifetime, a journey that she in which she is both participant and guide. For those who may not know about all the CWR has to offer, Anne strongly recommends the monthly dissertation bootcamps: “getting the chance to complete a structured day of work in great company, with tasty snacks? Perfection!”

Say hello to the CWR’s Spotlight Consultant of June 2019!

Rida Mall joined the CWR team in Fall of 2018 and is a student at CGU pursuing a PhD in English with a focus on American literature. Rida wanted to become a consultant after getting assistance herself for her graduate writing assignments. In doing so, Rida realized that she, too, wanted to assist fellow graduate students with the process of writing. One of Rida’s strongest writing skills is the ability to maintain clarity in an argument and recognize when a writer’s voice is lost in verbosity; she passes this knowledge on to students by assisting students in a way where they are able to recognize and rectify the problem on their own. Among the many great resources offered by the CWR, Rida wholeheartedly recommends our dissertation bootcamps, stating: “It’s always great to see a group of PhD students from various disciplines come together and chat about the different challenges of writing and graduate school in general. You feel like you’re not alone.”
