New live episode today featuring Reena Patel of the Trauma Resource Instittute! 1 PM on VoiceAmerica - Live Internet Talk Radio Health and Wellness Channel.

https://www.voiceamerica.com/episode/135100/cultivating-joy-the-eight-pillars

The great spiritual leader, Desmond Tutu died last week, and Resiliency Within was already planning to enter the new year with his message of joy. We will celebrate his life in this episode highlighting his dialogue with His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s about joy as expressed in their book, The Book of Joy. Desmond Tutu called himself the “prisoner of hope” and his message of hope and joy will live on. Many people in our world have expressed being tired and feeling a sense of hopelessness about the world condition. Desmond Tutu faced great hardship in his life, yet he was hopeful about the world condition, and he would say, “Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.” Reena Patel, LCSW, and the Director of Education and Training, of the Trauma Resource Institute will discuss with Elaine Miller-Karas, the meaning of joy and how we can be lifted from suffering and hopelessness to embrace the spring of joy within each one of us. They will discuss the eight pillars of joy: perspective, acceptance, humor, forgiveness, gratitude, compassion, and generosity. Listeners will be asked to explore how they can nurture their joy to live life with greater meaning and restore hope.

New live episode of Resiliency Within coming Monday August 2nd at 1 PM Pacific time on VoiceAmerica Health & WellnessHealth and Wellness channel: “The Human Toll of Fire Disasters: Helping & Healing Kids & Family.” featuring Scott Dinits.

Fires are devastating to communities and to the children, teens and adults grappling to survive and to recover. During the last week in Western United States, over 22,000 firefighters were combating wildfires, homes burned, and thousands of residents fled from the fast-moving flames. The Dixie Fire in Northern California and the Bootleg Fire in southern Oregon are being further sparked by very dry conditions and what climate change scientists say from climate change. The stark reality is we cannot expect the wildfire threat to ease any time soon. The "harsh reality" is the nation will continue to see more intense wildfires stated Oregon Gov. Kate Brown last week. We can learn from communities like Butte County’s Paradise, California destroyed by the Camp Fire in 2018. Many people lost their lives. The community of Butte County gathered during and after this tragedy to rebuild. Scott Dinits, my guest works as the Human Resources Director for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the North Valley and is also a Co-Director of the Ability First Sports Camp in Butte County. He is a Steering Committee member of Thrive. Thrive exists to support and expand community wide policies and practices that promote resiliency and address the impact of childhood trauma across all generations. Scott will address the impact on children and families caused by the fires and how through working with programs promoting wellness, healing can occur. He is certified in the Community Resiliency Model and as an ACE Interface Master Trainer.

The impact of traumatic experiences on individual and community health is widespread. According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2021), “Traumatic events and loss are common in people’s lives.” There is a need to quickly establish programs that provide timely psychological counseling and intervention to alleviate anxiety and improve general mental health. Health and community care systems led by a cadre of psychologists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, chaplains, social workers, marriage and family therapists, nurses, peer counselors and physicians have brought the community resiliency model concepts and skills into medical clinics, community mental health and resiliency programs, shelters for the unhoused, and hospitals. Emergency Medicine: "The Emotional and Moral Contact Sport" discusses "What you do say to the parent of a recent high school graduate who was just killed when the car she was riding in collided with a truck? Or to a patient when she informs you that she can't change into a hospital gown... because she's a zebra?" While finding the right words is a crucial part of every doctor's job, according to Dr. Jay Baruch it's often less about what you say and more about what you hear. This ER doctor highlights how the work is "often caring for people who come in with not just problems with their body, but also social issues, and substance use issues- and oftentimes all of them at once.

Does this sound similar to the spaces you are in with work, family, friends, and community? Is there "high-wattage drama?" and you want to figure out how to address it?

“I have no words right now that can express how I am feeling at this moment. I’m in complete shock… The last couple weeks have literally been hell filled with so many tears, anger, confusion and heart ache. Today I got the shock of my life…

As some of you may know my son William, who is a lawn mowing, yard cleaning, money making machine. Well my son had a job today that he had to go do and so I allowed him to go assuming it was like any other time. Well this time was different. Very different.

William came home and said, ‘Mom I bought you a car’

I of course laughed and told him ‘Ya, right!’

He said, ‘No mom I’m so serious I bought you a car. Come on we have to go.’

I’m at this point confused and skeptical and I said, ‘Go where?’

He said, ‘With this lady.’

And much to my surprise I go in my front yard and OMG there is a woman standing there and as William said she was giving us a ride.

William jumps in the car so I’m like ok?? This is some kind of joke right. No one speaks really…. So… as I’m still thinking at this point still a joke. We pull up to this house and William says, ‘Mom that’s your car.’

I completely lost it. I started balling my eyes out… I am speechless my 13-year-old son bought me a car.

He did some work for this woman and that was his payment that he worked out with her. And here I thought it was a joke… Nope I was handed the keys and paperwork to the car and I’m freaking out but so in shock like OMG this is happening right now. So, we got into the car it started right up and off we went.

I am so proud of my son. He is such a good kid. He may have his days but OMG what 13-year-old kid do you know that buys his mom a car… William I love you son and thank you. You have such a big heart and I love you.”
