This week our 11 of our amazing sixth graders presented for official approval a “New Kid Handbook” for Hoosac Valley Middle School.

This “New Kid Handbook” was compiled from the work of all of the 2021-2022 Hoosac Valley Middle School sixth grade students who found inspiration from Jordan Banks, the main character of New Kid by Jerry Craft.

From HVMS sixth graders to incoming students: The purpose of the New Kid Handbook is to help students new to Hoosac Valley Middle School get through the first few days of school. It provides schedules, directions, teacher lists, after school clubs, tips and tricks for making friends and more!

At the meeting, the school committee voted unanimously to adopt the handbook as the official “New Kid Handbook” to be provided to all students new to Hoosac Valley Middle School!

We are so proud of our exceptional scholars who were inspired by a book they read in class, identified a problem that kids face in the world today, and collaboratively developed a plan to right this wrong. They proved to everyone the power of student voice to make change for the better!

Special shout out to Summer, Paeton, Peyton, Marian, Tessa, Lukas, Aviana, Addy Genevieve, Kiley, Griffin, Ms. Gale, and Ms. Wright for representing at the school committee meeting on Monday!

As you may know, our district office has recently relocated to 49 Park Street in Adams. Unfortunately, we are still struggling with utilities and our phones are not yet working in our new office. If you need to get in touch with the district office, you can leave a voicemail on our system and we will call you back from another line. All our voicemails come directly to email, so we will get to you fairly quickly. Note, this is only regarding district offices. The school phones are functioning normally.

As always, you can also email our office and we will get back to you as well. I'm sorry for the inconvenience and hope to have this rectified soon!

Learn more about our exciting new programming at hoosacvalley.org!

We’re thrilled to share the news!

Hoosac Valley High School has been designated by the Massachusetts Department of Education as an Innovation Career Pathways (IP) School in Environmental and Life Sciences, and Healthcare and Social Assistance, and we are currently working on designation in 5 other paths.

Now as an IP school, partnering with the Berkshire Workforce Board through MassHire, Hoosac Valley High School offers students a chance to enroll in courses that provide them with the opportunity to take an in-depth look at a career field of their interest. Our pathways will allow students to enroll in post-secondary courses to earn industry-recognized credentials at no cost to them, to take specialized courses in their field of interest, and to engage in hands-on learning with our community partners via work-study and internship opportunities – all in preparation for their individualized post-graduation experience.

As a result of our current course roster, we’re able to offer the following paths:
Environmental and Life Sciences
Biomedical Science and Healthcare
Arts and Entertainment
Business and Entrepreneurship
Education
Engineering and Technology
Sports Medicine, Health and Wellness.

So the next question to ask is, WHICH PATH WILL YOU CHOOSE? We look forward to seeing all of our students in the coming weeks to start their exploration journey.

We were happy to represent the field of education at the 8th Grade Career Fair at MCLA this year! Two of our elementary school educators, April Mazzeo and Katie Chenail represented the field alongside Rowe Elementary School Principle, Bill Kittle.

Katie and April are seen below with Joshua Mendel the Associate Dean of Graduate and Continuing Education for Partnerships and Programs for MCLA and then again in the classroom with Mr. Kittle.

We value our partnerships and these opportunities for our students.

Corey is a sophomore at Hoosac Valley High School and is interning this year at the Berkshire Innovation Center (BIC)! He is interested in a Civil Engineering career path and through his internship experience is getting a vital head-start on the principles of engineering he will need to know to successfully pursue this pathway. Through his internship, Corey has learned a great deal so far about programming, computer systems, computer-aided design (CAD) and most importantly, how to learn and further develop his skills from making mistakes. He has built a 3D printer (featured in the picture - he finished in two weeks!), learned how to utilize it and has dabbled in electrical engineering projects. Corey’s next project will involve assisting his mentor, Tim Butterworth, the BIC’s Operations Manager, with designing the facility’s official signage!

Keep up the amazing work Corey! And thank you to Tim and his colleagues at the Berkshire Innovation Center for their continuous support and mentoring!

Funding for this internship is provided by Berk12 - Berkshire Educational Resources K12

Thanks to a partnership and a shared vision, the schools and agencies of Hoosac Valley Regional School District, North Adams Public Schools, BART Charter, the Northern Berkshire YMCA, North Adams PD & Adams PD and Northern Berkshire Schools delivered overflowing bags filled with snacks, lunch and breakfast items, drinks, bread and more! The bags are hitting the doorsteps of random school age children today in preparation of April break!

Each school organized their own distribution list, randomly selecting households. Hoosac was able to deliver 30 bags today, representing 78 students within our district, with hopes to fill more next week.

We have much appreciation for the folks who made such generous donations outside of Walmart on April 1st, they helped fill our overflowing bags! Additional thanks to our Superintendent Aaron Dean, our Family and Community Engagement Coordinator and the Adams PD for making the deliveries to doorsteps today.

Collection sites are at Adams Town Hall, Adams Police Department, Cheshire Town Hall, Cheshire Community Center, North Adams Public Library, North Adams Police Dept., and Northern Berkshire YMCA.

Donations can also be made on April 1st at Walmart from 9 - 2pm. We're hoping to collect "Kid friendly" food items that wouldn't necessarily require ovens, stove tops and can openers. We're looking to collect items that could be eaten without or with minimal supervision.
