In episode 101 of the Loan Officer Leadership Podcast, Steve Kyles and Chris Allen talk culture building, helping others thrive and how leadership's belief systems affect teams. You'll learn bits about Chris' journey and how it has shaped his passion for people and helping companies ultimately grow their culture for the better.

We can often be subject to the "that's how we do things around here" mentality. Unfortunately, this doesn't align with positive company culture or helping others around you grow. We must be intentional about what we tolerate in our organizations as well as being intentional about helping our teams believe in their ability to thrive.

AAP Show Ep. 7 - Holistic Wellness – Understanding the Needs of People

In 2011, Gallup identified that only 12% of employees strongly agree that they have substantially higher overall wellbeing because of their employer, and the vast majority clearly think that their job is a detriment to their overall wellbeing. In 2019, Deloitte confirmed that for the next generation, “enhancing the livelihoods of its employees” is one of the most important functions businesses should try to achieve. In 2021, McKinsey found that what is most important to employees is that they feel valued by their organization.

Join us as we discuss practical solutions for holistic wellness, and valuing people, with David Saviola, founder of ArborBrook Advisors.

What motivates people?

The migration to a more virtual workplace environment has disrupted “normal”. Many leaders are trying to figure out how to maintain culture, how to motivate people, how to engage teams, how to communicate effectively, etc. Brian Covey joins me on this episode to discuss how he, and other leaders he knows, are adapting to a new normal.

Brian is an executive at loanDepot, a proud father, an influencer, a top-rated podcaster and, just simply, a fabulous soccer dad.

AAP Show Ep. 5 - What do Employees Want?

McKinsey recently conducted a study on the nature and characteristics of the Great Attrition and what’s driving it. They conclude that the reality of this wave of resignations could be reversed if employers understood what employees actually want. The assumptions made between employers and employees is exacerbating this issue. In this episode we will discuss what employees want according to the data.

AAP Show Ep. 4 - The Rising Requirement of Recruitment Marketing

The so-called “Great Resignation” is requiring a new strategy in attracting and retaining employees. In previous episodes we have discussed the motivations and needs of individuals. People are looking for purpose in their work and want to be a part of something bigger than themselves. What is that something? Thanks for asking!

In this episode we will have a conversation with Kevin Miller, founder and principal of Popular Demand Strategy Group. We will be discussing brand positioning and its importance in attracting, motivating and engaging people.

You don’t want to miss this important conversation!

AAP Show Ep. 3 - Keeping Culture Remotely

Many leaders are awaiting a return to “normalcy” back at the office. The occasional stroll through the office environment that satisfied the anxiety regarding productivity, alignment and culture isn’t possible. The anxiety is difficult to appease. How can we maintain culture in a remote work environment? While this is the question on the surface, in this conversation we will explore other deeper beliefs about people that may need to be overcome.

Today's guest is Chuck Cooper, Founder & Managing Member at Whitewater Consulting.

AAP Show Ep. 2 - Leadership in the Workplace

In this episode we discuss the importance of Leadership in the Workplace with our guest Simon Bray , an expert in leadership, culture and organizational development.

AAP Show Ep. 1 - Creating a Culture to attract and retain

Instead of trying to figure out why people have been increasingly leaving organizations over the past decade, let’s flip the conversation. In this first episode of the Always About People Show, we will discuss how to attract and retain people by meeting their foundational motivations and needs. This initial episode will be more theoretical in nature, but future conversations will be more practical and interactive.

- Ensure people feel valued.

If you make people feel valued when you meet with them (virtually or in person), then meetings are not as daunting. They could even be fun! If people feel valued, they are more likely to feel they can speak up and contribute. Even if their contribution is not needed in a meeting, feeling valued will create good energy and happier faces. While the structure of the meeting, the agenda, and honoring time is important, none of those are as important as the culture you create as a leader. Your culture creates the ability for employees to contribute (or not), enjoy (or not), and progress (or not) with every meeting you have.

If your meetings are not going well, ask yourself how well you are making those people feel valued.

My last post hit the highlights of valuing people and regaining clarity for a zoom-weary team (or any other stressor). Here are more specifics to help you meet those needs and structure your meeting, in order to

The people on your team need to hear (and see) …

1-You value them - Express gratitude. Be as specific as possible to each person or team (depending on size/time) and let them know you appreciate the hours, sacrifices, lost sleep, stress, etc.

2-You know what’s going on - State the obvious reality: you know it’s been a stressful season. Be specific, without focusing too long on the negative situation/stressor/problem.

3- You are fighting for them - Celebrate what you can/focus on the positive.
It can be easy to forget what we (as an organization) are trying to accomplish and why we are doing it. We are still trying to ... restate your mission and vision to the team. Remind them WHY you all are doing this, and that you’re doing this together. Restate your BELIEF in the team (we can all work through this together...)

4-You are working on a plan to help them - Walk through your plan and ask for their help. Layout the steps you have taken to this point and tell them this is where you need their help. There are several other great posts in that give you specific lists and details on how to improve the agenda of a meeting, if you need that as part of your plan.

5-You need them - acknowledge you could not do this without them. Ask for their ideas/solutions and ask if they know anyone who could help or be hired (if applicable to the stressor that is affecting your team).

In wrapping up, restate your understanding of the situation, your gratitude for them, and your willingness to hear their ideas/suggestions. Valuing people and regaining clarity will help you meet the needs of your team as you .

Help! We’re Zoomed-out over here!

We’re all feeling it. We’re all adjusting to this new “meet from home” way of working. And even if your team is winning with Zoom meetings, there is likely something else causing stress in or from your meetings. I want to share 5 quick thoughts on how to value the people on your team and regain clarity when they are showing signs of wear-down from online meetings (or anything else!), so we can all better!

The people on your team need to see and hear directly from Leadership…
1-The team needs to hear that you value them
2-The team needs to hear that you know what’s going on
3-The team needs to hear that you are fighting for them
4-The team needs to hear that you are working on a plan to help them
5-The team needs to hear that you need them

In future posts, I will share more specifics on how to meet these needs in your meetings, but this can get you ideating!

People Who Adopt This Powerful 3-Word Habit Have Very High Emotional Intelligence 03/30/2021

People Who Adopt This Powerful 3-Word Habit Have Very High Emotional Intelligence

"I love you." - Do you think this phrase belongs in the workplace?

"it is uncanny how just thinking this way about your relationship with people improves things as a result...I'm talking about an overall, platonic love for fellow human beings. I found that doing this habitually triggered several natural behaviors -- all of which happen to be the kinds of things that people with high levels of emotional intelligence do."

1. Focused attention
2. Patience and Silence
3. Active interest and listening

I love "joe"!

We could really use these 3 words in every aspect of our culture today! I dare you to try.

Leaders, are you being intentional about trust in your team?

1. Assess trust. Is the team behaving in alignment with values? Are you tolerating anything right now?

2. Be trusting. Believe the best even before people “earn” it.

3. Include. People feel trusted when they are asked to participate in decisions, solutions, strategies, etc.

4. Talk about it. Be vulnerable. Discuss trust. Communicate fears, insecurities, questions, concerns, beliefs and assumptions. Your inner fears that degrade trust may be false.

Are you honoring those around you?

- Honor allows you to keep high levels of value for people.
- Honor believes the best in people.
- Honor retains faith in people.
- Honor allows you to encourage someone in one moment and hold someone accountable in another.
- Honor gives you the right to call someone out.

Embrace the Inconvenient!

In 2009 I was in Uganda with a group from Charlotte, NC. Pat and I were sitting together on a bus somewhere in Kampala. He was telling me about how he had intentionally made a commitment for 12 months to stop what he was doing any time someone needed him. He talked about being interrupted in the middle of tasks, phone calls that he answered when it wasn't the "right" time and embracing the inconvenience of conversations. Pat challenged me on that bus. 12 years later...I'm still challenged.

To leaders, founders, mothers, fathers, colleagues, teammates, siblings...I challenge you today.

In this new world we are living in, embrace the interruptions and the inconvenient!
