Maritime Law Society

The Maritime Law Society at the Charleston School of Law Member Dues: $15/semester $25/year

Charleston School of Law's Maritime Law Society is a student organization focused on the education and development of admiralty and maritime law, as well as laws concerning international law, multi-modal transportation, shipping, and US Coast Guard regulation. We are supported by membership and SBA, and work closely with the MALABU Maritime Law Journal and the Charleston Maritime Law Institute. Follow us for updates on meetings, events, and internships opportunities. Be sure to add the Maritime Law Society to your TWEN courses.

Mission: The Maritime Law Society is established to raise awareness and explore various aspects of admiralty and maritime law. This organization seeks to take advantage of both the significant presence of the maritime industry in Charleston, and visits to the Charleston School of Law by distinguished practitioners and members of maritime academia, in order to provide a range of both professional and practical programming. The Society will provide members with the opportunity to participate in demonstrations and tours of the ‘hardware’ of the local industry. Examples of these activities may include tours of the Port facilities or Coast Guard Station, and visits to tug or pilot boats. As well, the Maritime Society will invite speakers to discuss a range of both contemporary and historical issues in maritime law.

*** BREAKING - PLEASE SHARE - ROLLING LIVE EXPORT SHIP ***

Live Export Ship MV Jawan with 4327 Cows started rolling drastically at the Port of Portland this morning (an hour past Warrnambool) and has now been detained in the port.

What has happened to the cattle on the ship? That ship was tipping tremendously and some must have been injured.

We are waiting to hear more and will keep you up to date. We have people working behind the scenes to contact the appropriate authorities and media outlets.

Please share this widely.

+++++++++++++
*UPDATE* - 4pm, Friday November 23rd.

The ship is still in the Port of Portland and has been moved and hidden so it’s not in plain sight of the general public.

Reports they are pumping out water but we will get that confirmed ASAP.

+++++++++++++
*UPDATE* - 8pm, Friday November 23rd.

The cows are still onboard. And they are pumping water from the back end. No transparency. So much silence from Portland.

We have LESS THAN 70 tickets left!!

You can Venmo me, but you MUST follow these steps!

1) Venmo @CSOL-SBA
2) $30/person (so $60 for 2 people, etc. I do not bargain. I don’t care if you bought 4 tickets— you chose to do that. $30/person, period.)
3) Put “MLS HARBOUR CRUISE” in the heading
4) Send me a screenshot with the confirmation of the venmo transaction!
5) email: [email protected]
6) text/fb message confirmation will also suffice

NOTE: IF you venmoed for a Harbour Cruise ticket, and FAILED to inform me with proof of your purchase, you WILL NOT be allowed on the vessel!!

I do not have time to look over 500 Venmo transactions and decipher who has/has not paid. So, if you have already paid and failed to notify me (there are several of you), send me your screenshot ASAP.

Furthermore, the last day to buy tickets will be on Friday, October 5th from 12pm-1:15pm, or whenever we run out of tickets, whichever comes first.

WHAT TO BRING:
You MUST bring your Driver’s License with you to the vessel! This event is only for those who are 21 and up. Charleston Police will be checking your ID’s at the dock.

The vessel will leave the dock promptly at 7:00pm SHARP!! The vessel waits for no one! Not even if you’re running down the dock at 7:01pm. We’ve left people behind before, and we will do it again. Thus, plan accordingly.

ADDRESS:
360 Concord Street

So proud of both of our Admiralty Moot Court Teams for an OUTSTANDING job in Seattle!! Professor North bragged about y’all in class! What a compliment!! CSOL was well-represented last weekend!

These guys and gals are the reason we went to Seattle, to compete in the John R. Brown Admiralty Moot Court Competition. Collectively they won the oral argument portion in six out of seven rounds. Kirkley, Mary Alden, and Tom advanced to quarterfinals, and James won a Best Individual Advocate award (Top 2 out of 60+ competitors). James, AJ, and Zach missed quarter finals by one spot (Top 9 out of 23 teams). I could not have asked for more dedicated, intelligent, and professional students to be on this team. I am overjoyed that Zach and Tom will be returning next year, and will miss Kirkley, Mary Alden, AJ, and James immensely. Way to represent CSOL. So proud of all of you.
