As a shout-out to the College's dedicated College of Charleston Dining Services team, this week's Throwback Thursday looks at a smiling Cougar inside Craig Cafeteria.

Built in stages beginning in 1962, the Craig Cafeteria and Residence Hall originally included a student union and represented the College's first step in its expansion from the original main campus.

From local dairy, eggs, greens and so much more, the College of Charleston Dining Services makes a daily effort to provide locally sourced products in their on-campus dining menus.
On behalf of the Office of Sustainability, we would like to thank the more than forty attendees who came to the Sustainable Nutrition Workshop last Friday. Our three guest speakers did an excellent job addressing ways that students can live a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle on a college budget.

Justin McGonigal presented a vast amount of scientific evidence indicating the tremendous benefits of a Whole Food Plant-Based Diet. Students were given a strategy to prevent the lifestyle diseases Americans are most likely to suffer from. In addition, Justin demonstrated that a plant-based diet can offer immediate relief from common college student ailments such as depression, acne, and asthma. His presentation used scientific literature to dismantle popular concerns such as protein deficiency. Students were left with the conclusion that a plant-based diet is the most sustainable diet for humanity at this time.

Our second guest speaker, Jessica Cerovic, is a holistic health coach as well as a dance professor here at the College of Charleston. During her presentation, she spoke about her experiences as a dancer in college and the immense pressure she had to put her body through to meet her dance program’s requirements. She ended up with gastrointestinal issues and because of her experiences, after graduation, she decided to become a holistic health coach to help people reach optimal health.

Our third speaker, Ashley Thomas, Aramark's on-campus "Plant-Powered" Registered Dietician, gave helpful insights into the best places for vegetarians, vegans, and otherwise health-conscious students looking to live the lessons learned at the event to eat healthy with their campus Meal Plan.

Finally, we would like to thank our sponsors: College of Charleston Dining Services, gogogreens/ Black Bean Co., Halo, Dellz Uptown, Huriyali, Verde, and Gnome Café, for supporting our event with delicious food and coupons. We hope that you will check out these local restaurants that offer healthy and sustainable food options.

Beginning this Fall, children under eight eat FREE on Family
