Mission: Public health is the science and art of building and maintaining healthy communities through interdisciplinary research and education, health promotion, and prevention. Public health professionals develop, implement, and evaluate programs, policies, and initiatives focusing on disease and injury prevention. During the twentieth century, public health efforts improved overall quality of life and increased life expectancy. More recently, emphasis has been placed on achieving health equity and addressing social determinants of health. An understanding of comprehensive research methodologies, community awareness and involvement, and strong interpersonal skills are essential for career success in a public health-related field.

Thank you ISGLOBAL - Barcelona Institute for Global Health for discussing your very important and cutting-edge research with our study abroad students yesterday. Perhaps they will return to Barcelona to continue their public health training! Muchas gracias!

SURF Friday Feature: Meet Mackenzie Pelletier, a public health major @collegeofcharlestonpublichealth working with Dr. Sundstrom @CofCComm and Dr. Delay @cofchistory. Her project focuses on reproductive justice in Ireland. In May 2018, Ireland voted to repeal their constitutional ban on abortion. The group will publish a few papers on the processes leading up to the repeal, the repeal, and how abortion access has affected women. The project’s long-term goal is to foster a process of mobilizing the community to achieve social change by lifting the barriers that stifle women’s voices.

Go Joanna Walker!

Joanna Walker ’17 is participating in the Public Health Associate Program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In this program, recent graduates gain hands-on public health experience as a member of one of the top public health agencies in the world. She is stationed at the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Epidemiology and Informatics.
.
.
.
Joanna’s primary role is working in surveillance where she monitors databases that receive lab results from all over Nebraska. She looks for potential new sources of outbreaks and is responsible for notifying and working with the local health departments and healthcare facilities to mitigate the risk of the outbreaks spreading.
.
.
.
Through this program, she has learned how many entities and approaches exist to improve public health. She appreciates the broad perspective she has gained by being a federal employee working at a state government agency. After completing the PHAP program, she plans to pursue a Master in Public Health degree and PhD in Epidemiology and Biostatistics. She hopes to work as a state epidemiologist.
.
.
.
She advises public health students to take advantage of the opportunities and resources available (i.e. Public Health Society, Women's Health Research Team, internships, and independent research projects) because they will set you apart from other students and graduates. Here is what she had to say about her undergraduate experience, “The EHHP professors want to see their students grow and are willing to help. I did not anticipate going into public health; however, the passion and dedication of the EHHP professors I encountered helped me discover this was the field I wanted to pursue. Dr. Leslie Hart, who acted as my mentor, is one particular professor whose devotion to the field inspired me to work hard and get where I am today.” #ehhpalumni

Awesome spotlight on Public Health major, Jacob Schultz!

Meet Jacob Schultz, our College of Charleston Public Health intern for the spring 2019 semester. Since joining us in January, he has already had hands on training helping us edit some grant work, multiple data entry and research, shadowing and contributing to our event planning, as well as attending various community meetings that that RWWC partners with to expand our outreach.

As a soon to be graduating public health major, he chose RWWC because of an interest in HIV affected populations in one of his health classes sophomore year at College of Charleston.

"I started out as a biology major, then realized I wanted to focus on population health instead of clinical care, so public health was the best route for me. A lot of my classmates weren't educated on the topic of HIV/AIDS and I though this would be a good opportunity to learn more about it while getting some hands on experience. One thing I wish my peer group knew about HIV is that it's not a disease of the past, and how important and easy it is to prevent HIV. Unfortunately, HIV/AIDS is still a taboo subject and I hope to bring that education and awareness to my fellow peers."

When he isn't joining us in the office or in class, Jacob likes to "hang out with my friends, and go out and explore the city before I graduate in May. Charleston is such a great city, with a ton of awesome restaurants and other things to do! "

So proud of Samantha!

Samantha ’19 is pursuing a degree in public health because she felt it was vital to understand healthcare from a global perspective. She feels her courses and experiences in the major have set her up to be successful, well-rounded medical student. She plans to become a Pediatric Neurologist specialized in Epilepsy and her goal is to find a cure!
.
.
For the past four years, Samantha has worked as Research Assistant at MUSC in the Darby Children’s Research Institute. Here is what she had to say about this experience, “In our lab, we seek to better understand the fundamental pathophysiology which drives poor outcomes in Hydrocephalus. By researching Hydrocephalus, it can open up more knowledge about other neurological diseases that are still misunderstood in the scientific world. I am thankful for this experience because I have learned so many valuable skills from being in research as an undergraduate such as presenting at conferences, writing scientific papers, and so much more.” #StudentSpotlight

College of Charleston's School of Education, Health, and Human Performance

Dani ’19 is a public health major and the Community Health Coordinator at the Summerville Family YMCA. In this role she works with the community to connect people with evidence-based community health programs the YMCA offers, such as the YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program, Moving For Better Balance, and Enhance Fitness. She is a lifestyle coach for several programs, collects data for the programs, and engages with the community through outreach events.
.
.
Dani started working at the YMCA to fulfill volunteer hours for her health promotion field experience class. She fell in love with the work of the YMCA’s Community Health Department and was hired to work part time.
.
.
She is grateful for the knowledge and skills she has learned in her classes and for the way the College encourages students to get involved in the community and network with those in the public health field. #StudentSpotlight
