Enjoy yoga and kinesthetic learning through theme-based lessons, taught through literacy, crafts, songs, games, and more in a non-competitive environment.
As A Tree Yoga & Movement for Kids, is a program which incorporates yoga and kinesthetic instructional differentiation strategies, utilizing the latest brain research as a guide, which supports the link between physical activity and increased learning potential. Children will experience the many benefits that yoga and movement offer, including development of fine and gross motor skills, coordination, building strength and flexibility and an increase in focus and attention. Through social skills lessons and cooperative games, students will learn to develop self confidence, along with respect for self and others.
One of the five principles of Yoga is a proper diet. Yesterday we learned about Go, Slow and Whoa foods. The children made "smoothies" with this file folder activity while we talked about the healthy ingredients. Later made real smoothies, which the children loved!

Easy Pose, aka "criss-cross applesauce", is a pose that calms and balances. It also strengthens the back and spine and encourages good posture. When doing this pose, it's good to have a yoga blanket placed under the sitting bones for extra support and comfort. Go on....STRIKE A POSE! 😊

Today marked the beginning of Fall kids YoGa classes. What an exciting day we had!
This is a new favorite of mine! It's the perfect instant activity for kids as they enter the class. This can also be used for a little cognition ignition! Get those brains going with dancing, skipping and twirling. End with 3 cycles of slow deep inhales and exhales to calm them down. You'll be glad you did!

Instant activities are used to get students moving as soon as they enter the classroom. I used them a lot during the summer for a few camps that I hosted. I also like to use them for the children in my Kids Yoga classes. Many of them do not require any equipment. If you have a speaker/boom box and your cell phone or MP3 players, then you're ready to go!

Is it just me, or did Summer just seem to fly by? It's hard to believe that it's almost time for school to start. The beginning of the school year for me, means the beginning of Fall kids Yoga & movement sessions. I've been spending a lot of time WITHIN, to create the most exciting and engaging classes EVER! Joseph Joubert said, "To teach is to learn twice", and I find this to be true. With each school that I go to, each child that I teach and each heart that I touch, I always learn something new. I learn more about myself, the children that I teach and the world around me. I'm excited about the upcoming school year and all of the things to come!
I had the most amazing time today at the Uplift M.E. Mentoring Program Back to School Bash! There was music, movement, games, food, family, friends, COMMUNITY and FuN!!!! The kids that came to our station were ready to strike a pose. ✌🏾❤️🕉

Lizard 🦎 on a Rock/Child’s Pose Lounge variation is a such a relaxing partner pose. The person on the bottom, who in this case is my daughter, receives a nice stretch in the lower back. The person on the top, my daughter’s BFF Gabby, receives a nice stretch for the arms and abs as well as a nice opening in the chest.

This is one of my favorite crafts to do with my Yoga kiddos! During class, we talked about affirmations and how they're like magic words. They provide revitalizing energy.
Children made affirmation flowers. In the center of each flower, the children wrote the words "I AM". On the petals, they wrote they're positive words (friendly, smart, huggable, funny, caring etc.).

This is what Action Based Learning looks like! I tutor 3 little boys. This little guy had just gotten a new T-ball set and his mom wanted us to go to the park for our session. For our activity, I showed Jeremy a giant letter. If he could correctly identify the letter and/or letter sound, he could hit the ball and run to first base (polyspots worked well for this). I continued showing him letters and for each one that he could correctly identify, he was allowed to run to the next base. If he missed a letter, he stayed on that base. We kept track of his "points" and tallied them at the end of the session. There were so many skills practied in this lesson. Visual tracking, locomotor movement, letter recognition, letter sounds, counting and object movement. I mean really, who has time for worksheets?
